People fall into one of four categories when it comes to
bicycle riding: Strong and Fearless Enthused and Confident
Interested but Concerned No Way, No How Strong and Fearless are
happy to have roads they are allowed to travel on. Enthused and
Confident are happy to bike lanes, bike paths that define a space
for bicycle travel. Interested but Concerned: are happy when there
is little or no interaction with motor vehicles. No Way, No how:
will not be riding a bicycle.

Bicycle Solutions in Sacramento People fall into one of four

Strong and Fearless: 1,360 centerline miles of roads. Enthused and
Confident: 300 centerline miles of bike lane and bike routes.
Interested but Concerned: 84 centerline miles of bike paths and
wide sidewalks.

practices which could become standards. Caltrans endorsed the use
of the guidelines statewide, on April 11th. Twenty one design

TREATMENTS BICYCLE SIGNALS SIGNING AND MARKING Sacramento has

Conventional bike lane. Preferred width is 6 feet. (Florin Road)
Buffered right side bike lane. Provides refuge from door zone.
(Azevedo Drive) Buffered left side bike lane. Provides refuge from
high speeds. (H Street) Left side bike lane. Easier for left
turning from one- way streets. (L Street)

Contra-flow bike lane. Provides opposing travel for bicycles on

separated two- way bike path. (Garden Highway) Wide sidewalk for
bicycle and pedestrian use. (Natomas Boulevard) Early version of
raised cycle track. (J Street) The City is working on new cycle
track designs that are more consistent with NACTO guide.

Intersection crossing markings. (Carlson Drive and H St.) Through
bike lane. (Bruceville Road and Damascas Drive) Bicycle left turn

Traffic Signals oriented to detect bicycles. Both video and

Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacon for pedestrians (33 rd Street and
Folsom Blvd.) The City is experimenting with new signal
technologies.
