African Americans during the Reconstruction Era sought to become independent and not inferior, which led to conflict with the white community.
Economics During the Reconstruction Era
Southern blacks believed that if they were economically independent they would gain complete autonomy, but this was not necessarily true due to their lack of political power.
Expectation of Land
No more subordination
No land leads to sharecropping.
Then to the free markets
White man’s land
