The Stamp Act 1765
• First direct British tax on American colonists. Instituted in November, 1765. Every newspaper, pamphlet, and other public and legal document had to have a Stamp, or British seal, on it, which cost money.

• Colonists felt that the Stamp Act and other taxes were unconstitutional. The British Parliament insisted it had the right to tax colonists. The colonists claimed taxation without representation was illegal. The American boycott of directly taxed British tea led to the Boston Tea Party in 1773

• The North, having most of the factories in the country, had no slaves and was against slavery
• The Civil War was a war between the north and south over slavery, and to keep the united states united.

• The U.S. Civil War, also called the War between the States, (April 1861 -April 1865). The Southern states feared that Abraham Lincoln would block the expansion of Slavery and endanger the existing slaveholding system. Though Lincoln did free Southern slaves during the war by issuing the Emancipation Proclamation, he fought primarily to restore the Union.
