Child Development Associate (CDA) Credential
Mollie Smith
CDA Coordinator [email protected]
The Child Development Associate (CDA) National Credential is the most widely recognized credential in early childhood education
(ECE) and is a key stepping stone on the path of ECE career advancement. The program’s purpose is to enhance the quality of early
child care by defining, evaluating, and recognizing the competence of early child care professionals across the country. This process
includes 120 clock hours of formal training in specific areas, a portfolio, family questionnaires, a verification visit, and preparing for an
online exam. For more details about the specific process and requirements, visit the CDA Council’s website at cdacouncil.org.
CDA Education Hours
Classes for 2017 are already underway, but we still want to hear from you if you are interested! Please fill out our interest form at
partnersinearly.typeform.com/to/O945UI, even if you gave your info via paper, email, or phone in the past. We use your info to
determine future class schedules and locations. We work with a variety of potential students; those who work in child care homes,
centers, ministries (or not at all) and with a varied educational background. Smart Horizons also offers an Online Education CDA. For
more information go to smarthorizons.org/naccrra/ccan. If you completed independent study hours and want help, contact Mollie.
If you already have college credits, even without completing a degree, you may have the number of hours needed to move past the
CDA credential and into the next step of an Associate degree. If you have questions about your college credits, please contact Mollie.
CDA Credential Renewals and Expiration
All CDA Credentials are valid for three years from the date of the award. If your CDA Credential was awarded Jun 1, 2013 or after,
there is longer a grace period for an expired CDA. Keep all documentation for trainings and other professional development you
participate in from the date of earning your credential. We suggest you start the renewing process six months prior to expiration.
Go to cdacouncil.org > Credential > Renewal. Go to the credential you will be renewing and you will find a checklist to follow.
If you need an ECE Reviewer, contact Mollie to complete the paperwork and schedule a visit.
All information you submit goes directly to the CDA Council in Washington D.C. Child Care Answers is happy to be a support, but we
do not have any control or management over your CDA renewal.
If your CDA has expired, remember that your 120 hours do not expire! You will not need to retake the hours. You will need to begin
the credentialing process again – update binder, take test, complete observation with a PD Specialist, and apply to the Council again. If
you have questions about your expired CDA, contact Mollie at [email protected].
