Dyer Baptist Association
Director of Mission’s Report October 22-23, 2012
Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock,
over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers,
to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood. (Acts 20:28)
What can wash away my sin? Nothing but the blood of Jesus.
What can make me whole again? Nothing but the blood of Jesus.
Oh! precious is the flow That makes me white as snow;
No other fount I know, Nothing but the blood of Jesus.
(Robert Lowry, 1876)
When Robert Lowry penned the words to the hymn, “Nothing but the Blood,” he recorded the heart-song of
every Christian that ever lived. For isn’t it the blood of Christ that answers our most desperate need for a
savior? Though the world sees it as nothing more than foolishness, the need for Jesus Christ far outstrips any
other human need. For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are
saved it is the power of God. (1 Corinthians 1:18) Our theme for this year’s Dyer Baptist Association
Annual Meetings is “Nothing but the Blood!” The temptation is always to be distracted by the temporary
and to ignore the eternal. May I encourage each and every one of us to be diligent in giving attention to that
which our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ has defined as our marching orders. The Great Commission
continues to call us to an evangelistic and discipling fervor which must drive us out of our comfort zones into
the world in search of the lost and hurting. It is my prayer that each and every church of the Dyer Baptist
Association shall be faithful to God’s call “to seek and to save that which was lost.”
The Dyer Baptist Association continues to serve diligently in the fields here in West Tennessee as well as
throughout our world. This year has once again been a great year of ministry both in our own Jerusalem of
West Tennessee and extending throughout the whole world. The inaugural success of the DBA Children’s
Camp has spurred us to a greater vision for 2013 as we anticipate even more success in preparing children for
a lifetime of faith in our Lord. Our budget not only reflects our commitment to a ministry of teaching our
children a missions-based obedience to Christ but also a healthy and faithful participation by our many
churches in the cooperative work of our association. I am happy to note that the Dyer Baptist Association
continues to thrive because of the faithful “Cooperative Program” mindset of the churches and their leaders.
As your missionary, I encourage each and every church to regularly examine their financial faithfulness to
reaching our world for Christ.
The Dyer Baptist Association continues to develop an ongoing strategy of service to the churches by helping
them reach people in all stages of life. Our adult ministry programs include Women’s and Men’s Ministries
as well as Disaster Relief and other missions emphases. A college-age focus on ministry continues as we
strive to maintain the health of a thriving Baptist Collegiate Ministry on the campus of the Dyersburg State
Community College. The Jerusalem Project and other youth-oriented mission projects serve to give our
West Tennessee youth an outlet for their boundless energy and excited involvement into the work of our
Lord. As mentioned before, the Children’s Camp was such a success that we hope to see it become an
annual event in guiding our children to a lifetime of Christian service.

There are a number of specific directions that as your missionary I would covet yours prayers for. First, it is
my firm belief that the DBA continue as a church-strengthening and church-planting entity. As our church
plants both in Syracuse, Indiana as well as here at home mature, my prayer is that we will seek God’s will in
finding new opportunities of obedience in working with churches around our world. Let us build upon the
foundation of past commitment to missions by embracing these new and challenging opportunities.
Secondly, I believe that one of the primary identifying characteristics of being Baptist is our desire to win as
many as possible through the Cooperative Program of the Southern Baptist Convention. It is my desire as
your Director of Missions to prayerfully investigate and implement new ways to educate and promote the
Cooperative Program in the future. Finally, how can we impact the lostness of the people right here in
Tennessee? My prayer is that through the DBA, we can encourage and equip our churches to more
effectively reach those who are dying without a Savior and entering eternity without hope. Somehow, we
must keep evangelism and discipleship as the primary focus of all our energies and efforts.
As your Director of Missions, I am continually amazed by the churches of the Dyer Baptist Association. The
sense of family which exists between not only individual members of our churches but between the churches
themselves reminds me of the loving interconnectedness of the New Testament churches. It is my hope and
prayer that this loving mutual support will continue and that together we will claim all of West Tennessee for
Jesus Christ.

Baptist Collegiate Ministry
Dyersburg State Community College
Leading up to 10-11-12, BCM @ DSCC led training to prepare students to share the Gospel; many of our
students learned to use the "MORE Life" Gospel presentation and downloaded the app on their smart phones;
this Monday - Wednesday (prior to Engage 24 date) students prayer walked the campus and set up prayer
stations around campus each day; on Wednesday the BCM Praise Team took acoustic instruments and played
and sang around the campus fountain in middle of campus and had Bibles to give away; On Engage 24 day
we began the day with a prayer breakfast and sent the students out...and that night had a celebration service
and meal with students who shared! Greet movement to teach students about living a life-style of individual,
intentional evangelism! Several students shared how excited they were to be out sharing with students on
campus.
During the summer of 2012, the BCM at DSCC had 13 students selected to serve as Summer Missionaries.
The team serving in Dyer Baptist Association helped lead 32 children to the Lord while leading 12 Vacation
Bible Schools, two Children’s Camps and served on staff at the TBC Impact Camp at Linden Valley. This
team also served as part of a 34 collegiate ministry staff that served at the Registration Desk in New Orleans
for the Southern Baptist Convention.

I here-by agree to give the adult Youth leaders at my child’s church permission to carry my
child on the “Dyer Baptist Associational Youth Jerusalem Project”, January 20 – 21, 2013.
I understand the group will be taking teams to do various types of mission service projects in
the Dyer & Lauderdale County area.
I have discussed this trip and the schedule that was provided to me with my child and have
had opportunity to ask questions of the adult leadership regarding this mission adventure. I

this event, and all staff, leaders, agents and employees of here-in named organizations and

Women’s Ministry Report
It has been another blessed year for the ladies of the Dyer Baptist Association Women's
Ministry. God has provided us with opportunities for some new projects as well as our annual
projects.
The Copper Basin Christmas Ministry went so well last year, and once again this year we
have the names for 50 children ready to distribute. Helping with the Jerusalem Project is always a
delight. High Tea with a Southern Twist was held for the Pastor's Wives Fellowship in August
where fun was had by all. Throughout the year we were able to help the BCM on several occasions
by cooking lunches on Wednesdays, preparing desserts for the annual Fish Fry, and many others.
This month we were able to help with the Engage 24 and the Fall Retreat for BCM students around
this area.
We have been cooking at the BCM on Wednesdays. We could use any help from
individuals, church women's groups, or WMU groups. This is for you. Get involved!!
The cookbook compiled by the ladies of the churches which comprise the Dyer Baptist
Association has allowed some of us opportunities to meet new women as well as men. We sold
these cookbooks at booths during Depot Days in Newbern, area yard sales, and have books
available at local hairdresser's salons. There are still plenty of cookbooks still for sale.
Our new officers for the 2012-2013 year are:
Director - Melinda Davis
Co-Director - Cathy Cavness
Secretary - Regina Rogers
Treasurer - Sybil Belton
I must say that the last three years have flown by and I have enjoyed every day of those three years
as the Director of the DBAWM. The Lord blessed me with being able to spend time with some
incredible women doing His work.
Thank you Jesus for what you allow me to do.

PRAYER MINISTRY REPORT
It has been a privilege and a calling to be a prayer warrior throughout this year of 2012 that God has
given us. One of the prime blessings we have as Christians is to talk with God, and then listen to what He
has to say. As we spend time praying and listening, our faith will grow and our prayer life will strengthen. In
Colossians 4:2, the Apostle Paul instructs, "Devote yourself to prayer, and watch in the same with
thanksgiving." As we go about our daily lives, we should make it a habit to continually talk to the Lord. The
result will be that our God will open the door of provision as it is needed. Walk in wisdom which is a gift
from Him,( James 1:5) as we go about "redeeming the time." Let our speech always be filled with grace,
seasoned with salt, in order that we may know how to answer everyone.
If you were asked to describe your prayer life, what would be your answer? Could you say that you
have discovered the blessing of "Praying without ceasing" (1 Thessalonians 5:17)? In this fast-paced world
of ours, it is sometimes difficult to find time to pray. But, if we as Christians would consult God about our
decisions, our nation, and the like, we would be in a much better condition. Why not stop now and pray
about our nation's need for every Christian to vote in the election in November. God has a plan, and we need
to know what it is in order to obey Him. You are encouraged to pray for the entire staff in Washington as
they interact with the government leaders. Pray that they may present a Biblical perspective concerning the
issues that face our nation at this time.
Pray that the entire ERLC staff will be led by the Holy Spirit and faithfully do the work He has
assigned. If there has ever been a time in our history that we desperately need prayer warriors, it is now. Pray
for our military personnel, both here at home and abroad. Pray for their protection, salvation and spiritual
growth. Let's be sure we are "marching in step" in this Christian army. Let's take a stand--fill in the gap and
continually pray for freedom for the USA. Pray for our continued freedom to worship and to bow our knees
before the Sovereign God of this universe. Standing together in prayer will make a big difference (II
Chronicles 7:14).
Thank you for doing so many wonderful things this year. Things like honoring and giving to the
mission offerings and other causes that enhance the Kingdom at this time. To God be all the glory. Also in
our intercession, let us remember the following scripture: (Psalm 122:6: Pray for the peace of Jerusalem; they
shall prosper that love thee.") Let's all pray that both Jews and Muslims will come to a saving knowledge of
Jesus Christ. God bless you all. I love all you brothers and sisters.
Respectfully submitted,
Pattye Oakley

Men’s Ministry
Thankfully, the Men’s Ministry has not been called out to a major event in the past year, such as Katrina or the tornado in Northern Dyer County. We have responded to a number of requests for wheel chair ramps, trees down after wind storms and other needs. Our shower trailer has been used by a number of churches, the Tennessee Baptist Convention in Nashville and other church related organizations. The tires on the cook trailer have been kept warm with travel all over the association from DBA Children’s Camp, church cookouts, fish suppers, Bible schools and Backyard Bible Clubs. Our chain saws continue to remove unwanted vegetation, and our nail-guns for framing and roofing, along with compressors have contributed much to repair and new construction such as the Transitions addition. We thank each of you for your support and each church for your contributions toward our ministry. The equipment is housed at the association office to be used by our churches. Please call the associational office to place your event on our calendar if you need any equipment. May God continue to bless our DBA Men’s Ministry. Larry Koonce
EVANGELISM REPORT FOR DYER BAPTIST ASSOCIATION
If you were to ask me what I believe to be one of the saddest statistics that I know, it would be the
following. In the state of Tennessee, there are 6,400,000 people. By their own acknowledgment, over
3,000,000 of these are not Christians. In the counties of our association, there are 38,200 people. Of these,
also by their own acknowledgment, there are about 19,000 who have never come to a saving experience in
Jesus Christ. It is heartbreaking to realize that in the state of Tennessee there are 3,000,0000 people who are
destined for eternity in hell if someone doesn't make every effort possible to reach them for Christ. The same
is true of about 19,000 people in Dyer and Lauderdale County. Those figures should literally break the heart
of every Christian in our state and county.
It has been my privilege to serve on the Executive Board of the Tennessee Baptist Convention for the
past six years. During those years, it has been refreshing to see the focus of our state convention change from
that of MANAGEMENT to that of REACHING TENNESSEE FOR JESUS. I can assure you that
EVERY EGG IN THE BASKET of the Tennessee Baptist Convention, at this juncture, is focused on one
thing, and one thing only: REACHING THE LOST OF TENNESSEE. Everything else we do will be in
support of that one goal. And that is as it should be.
There has never been as many tools (not programs) available to us that will assist us in reaching
people for Jesus as there are now. There are at least three I wish to mention: 1) MORE LIFE 2) AWAKEN
3) HARVEST. Any church of any size can successfully use these materials (tools) to reach the lost in their
own communities. If you need any help with explanation of the proper use of these materials please call our
associational office or me.
It is my sincere conviction that we are absolutely living very near to the return of our Lord. That
being true, the 19,000 people in Dyer and Lauderdale County that are without Jesus MUST BE our burden
and our focus as churches that are commissioned to that ONE THING--making disciples of all nations,
beginning right here in Dyer County. May I ask all of us a question? IF WE IN DYER BAPTIST
ASSOCIATION DON'T REACH THE LOST IN OUR COUNTY, WHO WILL?
In His Service,
Bill Oakley
