Inside!
Greetings Brothers!
With the Spring semester now behind us, I am pleased to share with you the latest installment of the
DU Lehigh Newsletter. This semester was packed full of brotherhood, philanthropy, and community service
events, as well as formal recruitment, the formidable accreditation process, and DU International
headquarters sponsored leadership conferences. I am pleased to announce that our chapter has grown
considerably and has accomplished a wide variety of feats over the past few months. Most notably, we
organized a charity walk designed to benefit the Huntington's Disease Society of America to stand in
solidarity with a brother who very recently lost his father to the disease. We also had a very successful
recruitment process this semester. Further, we worked tirelessly to improve relations within both the Greek
and university communities. Lastly, some of our biggest highlights this semester came from our commitment
to fostering a diverse community on campus. We held several signature events, one of which was called
Courageous Conversations, which brought many different individuals together to
discuss typically taboo topics. Overall, this semester was a busy but exciting one
and next year we hope to continue on the path of improvement, goal achieving and
brotherly bonding that we've been traversing.
Sincerely,
Ricky Johnson

Excerpt from Chad Paul’s remarks:
“Terry, there is no gift we can give
you to recognize your many
accomplishments or the
extraordinary service you have given
to your country, your University,
and your fraternity. We do,
however, want to present you with
this small token of our appreciation,
the Lehigh Golden Delta Alumnus
Award. It is given with the hope
that, when you see sunlight
reflecting from its crystal, you’ll
think of your shuttle mission, as well
as the richness your association with
Delta Upsilon has brought to your
life, your family, and also to the lives
of all our Lehigh DU brothers.
Thank you, Terry!”

Spring Recruitment
This past year, Lehigh changed their
recruitment policy with a focus on reducing
the number of recruitment events that center
solely around alcohol. The first week of
recruitment was completely dry and each
fraternity was required to host at least two
recruitment events that were open to all
potential new members. Delta Upsilon held a
FIFA video game tournament and an open
gym at Grace Hall. We ended up having the
highest attendance for any open recruitment
event when we held the open gym and our
combined open attendance was just 2 people
short of the highest for any Greek
organization at Lehigh. In recognition for our
strong turnout, we were awarded a gift card
from the Office of Fraternity and Sorority
Affairs and received public recognition at the
weekly Inter-Fraternity Council meeting.
Below brothers and potential new members
are engaged in the FIFA tournament in the
Parlor room with the semifinals being played
at the same time.
Ricky Johnson: IFC
Outstanding Man of the Year
President Ricky Johnson has
worked hard since taking over the
Presidency in January. He has helped
orchestrate numerous events
throughout the semester, as well as
getting the entire fraternity more
engaged in the community and
attending more events on campus. In
recognition of all his accomplishments
this past semester, as well as his hard
work as philanthropy chair in the fall
semester, Ricky was awarded the IFC
Outstanding Man of the Year award.
Ricky said he is grateful for the
recognition but maintains that there is
still a lot more he would like to
accomplish before his presidency
ends. Ricky is pictured below with his
award.

Huntington’s Disease Charity Walk
At the end of February,
Delta Upsilon hosted a
charity walk to raise
money for Huntington’s
disease. Kyle Moore lost
his father to the disease
this past fall. There is
currently no cure for
Huntington’s and Kyle
and his siblings have a
50% chance of inheriting
the disease. He teamed up
with the Lehigh
Interfraternity Council,
Panhellenic Council, and
Multicultural Greek
Council and were inspired
by a strong turnout on
what was the coldest day
of the year to date. We
successfully raised over
$3,700 for Huntington’s
disease, which was
donated to the
Huntington’s Disease
Society of America. We
are very proud of the
impressive turnout of our
fellow Lehigh students in
support of Kyle, and the
walk was a truly moving
experience.

DU Regional Leadership Academy
Philadelphia, PA
Presidents’ Academy
Indianapolis, IN
The Presidents’ Academy is one of many
leadership education programs provided by Delta
Upsilon International Fraternity. It focuses on
preparing incoming chapter presidents for their role in
the fraternity and the challenges that they are likely to
face. It emphasizes values-based leadership to foster
change within a given chapter.
The most valuable lessons President Ricky
Johnson learned at the January program had to do
with increasing membership motivation and a focus
on Building Better Men. “We started by considering
what inspired each of us as presidents to believe in the
mission and values of Delta Upsilon. We then
identified areas of strength and weakness within our
respective chapters and considered how we could
apply personal understanding of those values to
making improvements in chapter culture.”
Upon returning to Lehigh, President Johnson held a
chapter meeting to discuss some of what he had
learned from the program and how he intended to
apply it as our new chapter President.
Designed for chapter officers,
emerging leaders, and advisors, the
Regional Leadership Academy
(RLA) provided our seven attendees
with the opportunity to develop
leadership skills and engage in
specific training. At our Northeast
RLA, which was held in February,
approximately 15 DU chapters and
colonies from the Northeast region
participated to better themselves and
their fraternity chapters as a whole.
Throughout the weekend, we
attended a number of different
breakout sessions on various topics,
including those focused on
recruitment, loss prevention, and
managing conflict. The culmination
of the weekend was the creation of
our chapter’s plan to promote more
engagement within the house and to
give off-campus brothers a reason to
come up to the house more often. It
was then shared with the rest of the
brotherhood at a chapter meeting and
we have been very successful in our
house team implementation.

Diversity Talk and Police Conversation

Officer Drew Devery who
came to talk to us about
various policies as well as the
building of a new police station
across from Rauch Business
Center. He also came with gifts
in the form of sunglasses that
many brothers can be seen
wearing in the picture.
Below: One of the biggest accomplishments Delta Upsilon had this semester was being the first
fraternity at Lehigh to engage in conversations on diversity and inclusion. We partnered with the
Black Student Union in hosting the Diversity Talk and, based on the success of the initial talk, we
held a second conversation on sexual orientation and diversity that was opened to more of the Lehigh
community. The circle below is made up of students engaged in conversation after watching a
documentary. Brother Jonathan Jean-Pierre was instrumental in organizing these two events.

Delta Upsilon Lehigh Chapter
Dear Brothers,
Greetings from South Mountain! As you have read in this newsletter, our Lehigh DU chapter continues to grow, excel,
and prosper. I want to congratulate all our undergraduates for achieving the highest cumulative average among
fraternities last fall, while at the same time serving the community, supporting charities, building a strong brotherhood,
AND having fun!
Incredibly, 2016 will mark the Fiftieth Anniversary of the dedication of our current chapter house. (The original house,
built in 1885, was the first fraternity house on the Lehigh campus.) Our tentative plans call for a celebration event in the
fall of 2016, so I’d appreciate it if brothers who are willing to work on that committee would let me know as soon as
possible. I would truly appreciate any help you can provide.
To prepare for lots of alumni visitors, and in keeping with our traditions, it’s time for those once-per-decade renewal
projects, some of which are already underway this summer. Your continued support of our efforts in maintaining Delta
Upsilon’s chapter in good condition are truly appreciated. Please make checks payable to Lehigh, but mail them to me at
the address below. Contributions are tax deductible and count toward Asa Packer pledges and giving levels.
Lastly, thank you to all the Brothers who sent me their 11 x 14 composites for the missing years I listed in our last
newsletter. We are still missing 1967, 1969, 1989, 1994, and 2000. Please look through your Lehigh DU “archives” if
you lived in the house during those years and forward any composites to me. We’ll have them copied and returned to
you, along with a DU “Thank You” gift! If you happen to have an actual DU framed composite in your basement, attic,
garage, or elsewhere, we would be most grateful for its return, no questions asked! Our goal is to have a photo of every
class, all the way back to 1885, on display at our 2016 celebration. Please help us achieve that goal!
Best wishes to all of you for a relaxing, enjoyable summer!
Best Regards,
Chad Paul ‘76

P.S. Just a personal note to let you all know that Mark Parseghian had a series of mini-strokes about 6 weeks ago. He has
moved from the hospital to Moravian Village for rehab and physical therapy. Gretchen says he’s doing well and expects
to be home by July 1.
