DPS Remote Learning: Year 2, Week 2 Week beginning Mon 20th
Please complete all tasks by Friday 24th April. Please note that some tasks are required to be completed daily including 20 mins reading and 15 mins spelling. Don’t forget to send photos of your work through FlexiBuzz. Please make contact with your child’s teacher before 3:45pm each day to ensure your child is not marked as ‘absent’ for the day. We look forward to seeing your wonderful work so we can give you
feedback. Happy learning Grade 2!
Reading: Read a ‘good fit’ book for 20 minutes every day, practising fluent reading. This week we will be focusing on alphabetical order. Please choose one activity to complete each day. To help explain this concept, you can watch the following YouTube clip: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oCDYoEm5Ls8 Your reading activities for this week include: ❏ In an old magazine, find a word for each letter of the
alphabet. Paste them on a sheet of paper in ABC order. ❏ Find 10 words in your book to place in alphabetical order
(optional worksheet attached below if you have a printer).
❏ List the names of the people in your family in alphabetical order.
❏ Find 6 items in your house and place them in alphabetical order of their name. Write the list and draw the items in your books in alphabetical order.
❏ If you have a dictionary and find 5 interesting words to put in a list with a small definition.
*To challenge yourself, you can try ordering words which have the same starting letter in your activities.
Maths: Please choose one activity to complete each day: ❏ Essential Assessment: Log on and complete one of your
learning goals in the ‘My Numeracy’ section. https://www.essentialassessment.com.au/ ❏ Foot Parade: There was a parade of animals. There
were 18 feet in the parade. Which animals were in the parade? (you can include mammals, birds, insects, reptiles) How many of each? Show how you know - draw a picture of the parade. Now choose your own number and make another foot parade to match.
❏ Race to 20: Play the Race to 20 game with a member of your family. For each turn say “I have…” (the total number of counters that you have) and “I need… “ (the number of counters you need to make 20)
❏ The answer is 24...What might the question be? See if you can come up with at least 5 questions / number sentences. You could also choose your own ‘answer’ number and come up with a matching set of questions
*Don’t forget to work on your Counting Caterpillar goal for 15 minutes twice a week.
Writing: For the next few weeks we will be writing Informative Texts. ❏ Begin by looking at the information at the end of the
document about Informative Texts. Pleas write an Informative Text, using a topic you know a lot about (other than turtles or elephants).
Other tasks to complete this week: ❏ Brainstorm ideas for Informative Texts you could write
about under the headings: Nature (plants, animals); Places (cities, countries, space); Activities (sports, crafts, music); People (athletes, famous people, community helpers).
❏ Choose a topic (different to your sample) that you would like to write about over the coming days. Write down everything you know about this topic.
❏ Group and write your ideas under subheadings. For example: If you have written about an animal, group your ideas under headings of Food/Diet, Looks Like/Features, Interesting Facts. Add other facts you know to these subheadings.
Daily Spelling: 15 minutes Choose one activity from the menu each day to help practise your spelling words. Your current spelling words can be found on Literacy Planet https://app.literacyplanet.com/login

Inquiry: Big idea: ‘By mixing and changing materials we use chemistry in our everyday lives.’ This term we are exploring materials and mixes. Watch the following video to begin exploring our unit: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D_CsTYmsORc ❏ Explore: You will need some cups or containers then
collect a range of items from around your home for example: sand, flour, water, blocks, rocks, salt, oil, marbles, paper clips, water, rice, milk, cornflakes, etc
❏ Investigate: Set up your cups or containers and place two different items in each (for example one cup could have water and sand, another could have marbles and paper clips). Observe what happens. In your work books draw what the materials look like before you added them into the cup and then draw what they look like mixed together.
❏ Think: Did the materials change when you added them to the cup? Do you think that the materials will do different things when you mix them with other materials? Can you separate these materials once they are mixed? How?
❏ Wonderings: Please record your wonderings as you watch this video and explore the task. Choose one wondering that you would like to explore and discover this term and send it to your teacher.
Family Time Spend some time with your family. Here are some ideas of things you could do together: ❏ Do some gardening. ❏ Cook with your family. ❏ Play a game.

Year 2- Performing Arts- Week 2 Online Learning: ‘Instruments I know’ We can make music in many ways, using our body, voice, tapping, hitting, strumming or blowing into objects or things. These ‘things’ can be homemade, everyday items e.g. pots and pan or instruments. At school we have had the opportunity to experiment with playing different types of drums, marimbas, percussion instruments and ukuleles. But in the world of music and creating different types of music there are so many different types of instruments.
Can you make a list of all the instruments you know?
You can do this by either drawing them or writing them down.
Create a poster with 5 pictures of the instruments you know or love and write its name underneath. (Take a picture of your poster and send it to
your teacher)
DPS Remote Learning: Year 2, Week 2 Week beginning Mon 20th
What Instruments do I have here? Here are some other instruments Mr Stephens has found.
Can you find out what SOME or ALL of these are and label them?
Online Explore: Head to the ‘New York Philharmonic Kids Zone’ and explore their site. There is some wonderful games, instrument information and concerts.
