e Leipzig New Lakeland is a direct result of centuries of extraction, rening and use of the natural resource of lignite. e landscape changed its appearance signicantly, especially aer the open-cast mining in the 20th century. In the course of the German reunication in the early 1990s and the conse-quently changing energy policy, this era however came to an sudden end. Within a short period of time, the whole mining infrastructure virtually disappeared. Today the landscape to the south and north of Leipzig is increasingly characterised by lakes that have developed from the open-cast mine pits – the “Leipziger Neuseenland“ (e Leipzig New Lakeland).
However, there is still active open-cast mining in the south-west of Leipzig today. Here, visitors have the opportunity to gain insights into the current coal mining
Despite the ongoing coal mining, the appeal of the newly developed landscapes is causing the memories of the time before the lakes to fade increasingly. is small guide aims to keep these memories alive and simultaneously provide a showcase to modern open-cast mining.

COAL RUSHCoal Mining in the Borna area BERGBAU-TECHNIK-PARK
(MINING-TECHNOLOGY-PARK)
From Open-Pit Mining to the Landscape of Lakes
e Mining-Technology-Park presents complete conveying cycle of a lignite open-cast mine in a comprehensive way: dismantling of the cultural landscape, preparation of the landscape before the mining starts, lowering of groundwater, the extraction of overburden and coal, transportation, dumping of overburden and the subsequent restoration and recovery of new landscapes. A special part of the park is a dedicated to the loss of home and disappearance of villages.
e impressive main players of the 5.4-acre park rise high above the landscape – two large scale machines from the former open-cast mine in Espenhain. e bucket-wheel excavator 1547 (weight: 1.300 ton, year of construction: 1985), and the stacker 1115 (weight: 2.400 ton, year of construction: 1986).
Both children and adults are invited to marvel at the extent of the machine technology and logistics that were, and still are, necessary to satisfy humanity's hunger for energy. Some of the former miners will be reminded of the “old times”...
Information boards with texts suitable for children allow for an individual tour around the park. is is supplemented by changing exhibitions in the “E-Haus” and in the cavern. A playground is provided for children, food and drinks are also available.
Industrial culture is expessed in relicts and monuments – the most signicant of them are included into the Saxon Route of Industrial Culture: www.sachsen-tourismus.de. e maintenance and the vivid communication of the heritage that is based on industrial culture are the key objectives of the Mining-Technology-Park.

e Museum in Borna oers numerous exhibits about lignite mining. e geological processes, which led to the formation of coal as well as the history of coal mining, play an essential role as the history of lignite mining and the processing industries in the exhibition. Its inuence on the lives of the people, nature and the landscape is given particular consideration.
e age of lignite mining in Borna and the surrounding area began in 1799. Until the early 20th century, the coal was mined mainly underground. is environment is simulated by walk-in tunnels inside the museum.
e extraction and processing of lignite has brought about and still brings signicant changes, which determine the appearance of the North-Western Saxony cultural landscape today. e Church of Emmaus in Borna becomes an impressive symbol for the inuence of lignite mining of the region. Its original location was in Heuersdorf – a village that was excavated in 2009. In 2007, the church was moved to the town of Borna in a logistically highly complex operation in order to preserve the historical building and conserve it as an extraordinary memorial to those who had to leave their homes.
Please note that the permanent exhibition on lignite will be revised until the mid-2015. Until then, special exhibitions will be dedicated to this topic.
Other signicant topics of the town's history are the Royal Saxon Carabineer Regiment, onion cultivation and the production of musical instruments. e museum provides attractive exhibition areas on these subjects as well.
