CONSTRUCTION, THE BIGGEST
ENVIROMENTAL DAMAGE
CONTRIBUTOR
Consume 50% of
natural resources
40% energy
16% water
Contribute 45% CO2
emission more thantransportation and the
others industry

SUSTAINABLE CONSTRUCTION
is one action or
movement that we
should do to minimize
environmental damage
So the challenge is to
achieve sustainability
and build high-rise
buildings

SUSTAINABLE TALL BUILDING
Why must tall building
Tall buildings have great potential of creatingsustainable built environments by their ownnature.
tall buildings use land more efficiently.
Power in tall buildings can be served withshorter length of distribution lines than in low-rise complexes

PROBLEMS IN TALL BUILDING
consume enormous amounts of energy to
operate

DOUBLE SKIN FACADE
This research,
performed by Franklin
Andrews
double skin buildings
are able to reduce
energy consumption by
65%
running costs by 65%
and cut CO2 emissions
by 50%,
compared to advanced
single skin building.

WHAT DOUBLE SKIN FACADE IS
a pair of glass skins
separated by an air corridor
The main layer of glass,
usually insulating, serves as
part of a conventionalstructural wall or a curtain
wall
the additional layer, usually
single glazing, is placedeither in front of or behind
the main glazing.
The layers make the air
space between them work to
the buildings advantageprimarily as insulation
against temperature
extremes and sound

ADVANTAGES
Lower construction cost
compared to solutions that can be
provided by
the use of electrochromic,
thermochromic or photochromicpanes
Reduced internal noise levels inside
an office building
Acoustic insulation
In principle, Double Skin Faades can save energy when
properly designed
The DSF around high rise buildings
can serve to reduce the effects of
wind pressure.
Low U-Value and g-value
are the low thermal transmission
(U-Value) and the low solar heat gain
coefficient (g value).
the glazed space of a DSF
may be used as a fire
escape.

pressure effects
Energy savings and reduced environmental
impacts

CONCLUSION
Double Skin Faades for office buildings were
developed mostly in Europe in order to arrive
at increased transparency combining
acceptable indoor environment with reduced
energy use.
