DONOR NEWSLETTER Christmas Issue 2011
FROM THE CEO
Your support now will help us to achieve our mission and to increase opportunities for regional communities
to engage in quality arts experiences. Queensland Arts Council has a number of core principles which underpin
its operations. Areas where we focus our work, to leverage the best outcomes for the dollars you give, include;
the Arts, Health and Wellbeing; Youth Engagement and Education; Community Resilience; and the Arts and
the Environment. As a touring organisation travelling many thousands of kilometres a year, we, like many
Australian organisations, are focused on reducing our carbon footprint and using recycled and
environmentally friendly materials, whether it be our touring exhibition crates, props or scenery. In 2011, our
50th
Anniversary year, we are committed to making a difference in this particular area, while maintaining the
highest-level possible of regional arts experiences.
I have been interested to read lately of the amounts of money absorbed in charity administration in
fundraising. While all fundraising costs money for mail campaigns and events, and while such costs are quite
legitimate, QAC is extremely fortunate to have a dedicated and committed team of volunteers on the Cultural
Support Fund Committee. In addition, because the fund operates within QAC’s overall administrative
operations, we have been able to ensure, in 2011 for example, that 94% of your gifts were directed towards
the outcomes you want to achieve for regional Queenslanders.
Music. Arts. Drama. Dance (M.A.D.) Camp by Johanna Searles, Education Liaison Officer, Queensland Arts Council
Arthur Frame AM MFIA
Chief Executive Officer
It’s that time of year when our minds turn to giving. I know when I give, I like
to make a difference. I know you feel that way too. At Queensland Arts
Council we are very focused on making a difference in regional communities
in supporting emerging artists and in providing quality experiences in the
visual arts and especially for our young people in Queensland schools.
Queensland Arts Council’s M.A.D. Camp (Music. Art. Drama. Dance) is a multi-
arts residency program for 60 secondary school students in years 10, 11 and 12
from rural, regional, remote and urban Queensland.
Held for the first time in 2011, M.A.D. Camp took place
during the first week of the September school holidays.
Following the January 2011 extreme weather events in
Queensland, the camp inspired young people to think
optimistically about their future through participation in a
week-long program of multi-arts workshops, training and
excursions.
Left: Participants in 2011 M.A.D. Camp at The Powerhouse
QAC received a grant from The Tim Fairfax Family Foundation which significantly subsidised participation for
young attendees in 2011. Other event partners were the City of Ipswich, Jani Haenke Charitable Trust and
Ipswich Girls’ Grammar School. As such grants are competitive and are often one-off, we are seeking your
support to present M.A.D. Camp again in 2012.

ARTS EMPLOYMENT:
A RICH LEGACY OF ENTERTAINMENT
the David Poulton Story
It was an interesting day back in 1970 when my wife Sally and I met Dr Gertrude Langer at Cribb Island State
School to audition for the Queensland Arts Council with the prospect of a short tour to some of the smaller towns
in Queensland with our puppet theatre.
Thirty-five years and approximately 3.5million young audience members later, the short tour became a lifelong
career. Touring was hard physical work and had its challenges, without the luxury of good roads, air conditioning
and decent cars. On our first tour, we were marooned between Winton and Cloncurry for 5 days on a black soil
road due to rain, unable to move. We were also flooded from Cloncurry moving east one year and had to put our
vehicle and caravan on a train so we could move on to our next performance. The outback people are the most
accepting group of people and we have made many wonderful friendships over the years.
We were also the first QAC artists ever to visit the remote Cape York Peninsula and Channel country. I obtained a
pilot’s licence and self-flew tours for many years.
Over the years we have trained many young Queenslanders in puppetry and many have made wonderful artistic
careers.
Today, we are running one of the world’s largest animation puppet companies from our Noosa Heads base. We
create incredible animated window displays with all motions sequenced to music and have been contracted to
make David Jones’ Sydney Christmas window display for the past 6 years. Our mechanical animation company has
created 11 full time arts jobs in Noosa. The 35 years of touring with Queensland Arts Council taught us discipline,
organisation and above all, the love of the arts by realising the affect one can have on people’s lives. It is an
amazing feeling to know that about 25% of all people in Queensland have experienced and enjoyed our
productions.
Thanks Queensland Arts Council!
David Poulton is Queensland Arts Council’s longest serving artist and in 2011 became an Associate Artist of the
Company. He will present Wok and Wal in Queensland primary schools in 2012.
TIM FAIRFAX AM WINS PHILANTHROPY LEADERSHIP AWARD Queensland Arts Council is delighted to have successfully nominated Mr Tim Fairfax AM for the Goldman
Sachs Philanthropy Leadership Award, which was presented to Mr Fairfax at the Australian Business Arts
Foundation (AbaF) National Awards on 11 October in Perth.
Gina and Tim Fairfax AM at the Awards
The Tim Fairfax Family Foundation has played a significant role in the delivery of quality live arts experiences
to regional Queenslanders through the Queensland Arts Council, and through many other charitable
contributions to arts organisations and the community. Congratulations Tim!

When donors support Queensland Arts Council they assist us
to provide great arts programs and educational outcomes
state-wide. They also provide enormous support for - and
employment of - artists. Here is one artist’s story.
RECOGNISING OUR DONORS All donations small or large, made to Queensland Arts Council, are absolutely essential to the work of our
organisation in communities and schools across the region. We are very appreciative of the support provided

QUEENSLAND ARTS COUNCIL TO LAUNCH NEW ARTSLINK WEBSITE
We are very excited about the new site, which wi
It will provide visitors with a What’s On Calendar for state-wide arts events and will support the work of
over 250 regional arts organisations, including our Local Arts Councils and our 200 strong network of
Associate Member organisations, through our new powerful networking tools. The website would not have
been possible without the support of our partners, Arts Queensland, Onion Creative, Zero Hour & Co and
you, our donors, as the Cultural Support Fund has also invested in this excellent new resource for regional
communities and all Queenslanders.
IN MEMORY OF JANI HAENKE Queensland Arts Council is proud and pleased to be able to honour the memory of Jani Haenke through the
generous donation made from the Jani Haenke Charitable Trust this year. A renowned environmentalist with
a lifelong passion for the arts in all its forms, Jani was a member of a long-established Ipswich family (and
past-student of the Ipswich Girls Grammar School) and with a deep interest in the cause of endangered
species, we believe Jani would have been delighted to have seen her gift supporting the following arts and
environmental projects:
QUEENSLAND ARTS COUNCIL SELLS ITS PROPERTY IN DUTTON PARK QAC has made the decision to sell the Dutton Park property as the building is no longer suitable because of
its size, and as a result of rising property management costs. The sale was confirmed last week and
finalisation is expected to occur in mid-2012.
This publication has been printed and distributed with the support of Momentum Print
As you may have noticed, Queensland Arts
Council’s website has been featured as a
temporary site for a little while now.
Thanks to your assistance – our new website,
