Italian PrideSport is often used as the ideal metaphor
to easily and clearly communicate what
determination, passion, ability, seeking
out continuous improvement, strategy and
teamwork can achieve – the fundamentals
of any successful business as well. Today, as
I write, we have just been part of what many
people are describing as an epic moment
and will most certainly be remembered down
the years as the synthesis of what has been
briefly described above. I am referring to the
final of the US tennis open, which for the
first time saw two Italians facing each other,
Roberta Vinci and Flavia Pennetta. The former
eliminating the world n°1 (Serena Williams)
and the latter the world n°2 (Simona
Halep). While the two Italian girls were
playing out the final, another compatriot,
Aru, was bringing home the Vuelta tour of
Spain cycling race and the Italian basketball
reached the quarter-finals of the European
championships.
In expressing satisfaction for these
achievements, I am also reminded of
the impression that we Italians have of
our country, all too often well below the
perception of Italy abroad. Time and again
Italians have shown the capacity to come
through situations where a supposed
inferiority should bar even participation in an
event, but which, instead, is the kick start to
achieve unimaginable results of the highest
order. The odds of Vinci winning were given
at 300/1 by the bookmakers, the crowd,
cheering on their local favourite, did nothing
but applaud her opponent, while the Italian’s
winning shots barely received a whimper.
Finally, after a series of thunderous winners
and a primal scream of emotion, which has
immediately gone viral with millions of clicks
(clap that shot!), brought the partisan crowd
to gradually come over to her, even pushing
her towards victory.
It appears to me that when speaking
of industry too, there is a tendency to
underestimate Italian ability to excel and
be victorious, and what makes me saddest
of all is when this opinion comes from
Italians that I can only call masochists. The
tendency to be “down” whatever reality tells
us is not helping anyone for sure. Another
example along the same lines is that of Expo.
Slammed as a flop, criticized by all, almost a
new national sport: who could denigrate the
event the most! And while we await official
numbers, there is no doubt that for the entire
summer, the “decumano” central street has
sprona invece a ottenere risultati eccellenti e inimmaginabili.

seen hundreds of thousands of people
pounding the walk-ways, never ending
queues to see most of the pavilions,
and this despite all the doomsayers
waiting for their “I told you so”
moment, hoping that Italians and
international visitors alike would have
deserted the event.
Italy is a great country, and maybe the
only people who are yet to realize this
are… the Italians themselves. Perhaps
single events of sporting success can
help to change this alarming attitude
that brings with it nothing positive,
as the national anthem so stirringly
states: L’Italia s’è desta! Italy be
roused!
A new booklet specializing in vehicle lifts
One of ASSOFLUID’s founding principles is “to
promote and develop technical and professional
know how through the publication of manuals
and booklets…”, thus making the best possible
contribution to the spread of technical knowledge
in the fluid power sector.
Having created hydraulic and pneumatic manuals
over recent years, as well as more specialized
publications relating to product specification and
safety, the association has produced a booklet,
the first in a series, that accompanies the manual
entitled “Hydraulics in industrial and mobile
applications” with case studies from the sector.
Vehicle lifts are one of the most widely used
applications for hydraulic systems. The theoretical
text is accompanied by images, figures and
hydraulic diagrams, able to illustrate typical
system problems encountered and features
practical calculation and dimension examples of a
lifting circuit.
The final version of the text and the inclusion
of images was overseen by the engineers Carlo
Maria Rozzi De Hieronymis, William Dia and Mr.
Loris Chierici, and, of course, was indebted to the
companies that provided technical designs and
images of specific products, without which the
publication would never have seen the light of day.
The Association warmly thanks all contributors.
A tutti vanno i ringraziamenti dell’associazione.

The fluid power sector in the first half of 2015
According to the results of the Quarterly
Economic Survey, which refers to the first
half of the year, conducted by ASSOFLUID
on a sample of associated companies, the
Fluid Power sector in Italy records positive
data for both divisions on almost all entries
considered in the survey, about both turnover
or orders. However some negative data must
also be taken into consideration.
In particular, the Domestic market is till
on course, following the positive trend of
the latest quarters for both hydraulics and
pneumatics.
Analyzing the two divisions separately, in
terms of turnover hydraulics shows positive
data as regards the domestic market (+6.7%),
exports (+4.8%) and imports (+ 4.9%).
Domestic market (+6.0%) and domestic
production (+ 5.4%) are both positive.
As for pneumatics, turnover variations show
great differences: -1.4% for exports, +6.8%
for Italy, + 10.7% imports; with domestic
market at +9.0% and production at +2.1%
compared to the first half of 2014.
The portfolio situation shows differences
too. Domestic market data as follows: -3.4%
for hydraulics and +9.6% for pneumatics,
while production records +5.6% and +2.1%.
respectively.
