    DearColleague:

    Thepurposeofthisresourceistoprovideyouwithanannotatedlistingofdocumentaryfilmsforteachingpsychologycourses.Documentaryfilmisapowerfulmediumforpsychologycourseinstruction,providingexamplesofconcepts,issues,andtheoreticalprinciples,embeddedintherealworldhumanexperience.Documentariesarealsoexcellenttoolsforpresentingcomplexconceptsthatdonotlendthemselvesreadilytodescriptionorexplanation.

    Thisresourceisnotinanywayintendedtobeacomprehensivelistingofalldocumentariesthatcontaincontentrelevanttotheteachingofpsychology.Thenumberofdocumentaryfilmsproducedinthepastdecadehasincreasedexponentially.Atpresentthereisnoentitythattracksthenumberofdocumentariesproducedeachyear,noristhereanentitythatmaintainsamasterlistofalldocumentariesproducedwithintheUnitedStates,letalone,internationally.InpreparingthisresourceIscreenedover1,000films.Thefilmsincludedinthisresourcewereselectedusingthefollowingcriteria:thematiccompatibility(thecontentofthefilmreflecttopicsofinterestwithinthedivisionsoftheAPAandsubjectmattercoveredinpsychologycourses);contemporarycontent(thecontentofthefilmreflectscontemporaryissues,themes,andtheoreticalperspectives);length(therunningtimeoftheentirefilmorsegmentsofthefilmarecompatiblewithtypicalcoursemeetingschedules);andavailability(thefilmisreadilyavailableinDVDformatthroughlibraries,distributors,retail,and/orrentaloutlets).

    ThisresourcedoesnotincludematerialexclusivelyavailableonVHStape.ManycollegesanduniversitiesacrossthecountryarephasingoutVHStechnologyandlibrariesarepurgingVHSmaterialsfromtheircollections(Russell,2010).InscreeningfilmsforthisresourceIfoundthatthemajorityoffilmsthatIborrowedthroughinterlibraryloanthatwereinVHSformatwerehighlydegradedwithpictureandsoundissuesthatwouldbetoodistractingforclassroomuse.

    DocumentaryFilm

    Documentaryfilmsareadistinctgenre,setapartfromnarrativefiction(featurefilms)andavantgardefilmsbyfivemajorcharacteristics:subjects;purposes,viewpoints,orapproaches;forms;productionmethodsandtechniques;andaudienceresponse(Ellis&McLane,2005).Documentariesareaboutspecific,factualmaterialandgenerallyexploremattersofpublic,ratherthanprivateconcern.Thesefilmsdocumentsocioculturalphenomenainordertoeducateorraisetheconsciousnessoftheaudiencesunderstandingandinterestinthepeople,events,places,institutions,and/orproblemstheyhighlight.Forthemostpart,thesefilmsareunscriptedtheircontentislimitedtowhatthefilmmakercanactuallyobserveandcaptureonfilm.Thesefilmsareaboutrealpeopleandareshotintherealworld.Finally,theintentofdocumentaryfilmisnotonlytoprovideviewerswithanaestheticexperience,buttoimpactorinfluencetheattitudesoftheiraudiences,andperhapseveninspirethemtoaction(Ellis&McLane,2005).Itisimportanttonotethatmostdocumentaryfilmmakersaretrainedasfilmmakersorcometothegenrefromsomeothercloselyrelateddisciplinesuchasjournalismorcommunications.Theyarenot,asagroup,trainedinpsychologymost,wouldconsiderthemselvestobeartists.Sowhilemanydocumentaryfilmscontaincontentandinformationrelevanttopsychology,thefilmsarenot,forthemostpart,createdwithpsychologicalprinciplesinmind.Documentaryfilmsaresimilartonaturalisticobservationorethnographyinthatthefilmmakersdocumentwhattheyseeandexperience.Becausethesefilmsdocumentreallifeexperiencesoftheirsubjects,somethemesaredifficulttocapture.Forexample,therearealimitednumberoffilmsthatdepictvulnerablepopulations(individualswithpsychiatricdisorders,abusedandneglectedchildren,prisoners,refugees,etc.)becauseissuesofconsentandexploitationoftencomeintoplay.Despitesomeofthelimitationsofthegenre,thesefilmsarestillvaluableresourcesfortheteachingofpsychology.Pedagogy

    Asnotedintheintroductiontothisresource,documentaryfilmsareapowerfultoolforinstructioninpsychology.Theycanexposestudentstoaspectsofthehumanexperiencethatmaybeunfamiliarorprovideexamplesofconceptsthataredifficulttoexplainordescribe.Belowyouwillfindvariouspedagogicalapproachesfortheuseofdocumentaryfilmsinteachingpsychologycourses.

    UseofClipstoReinforceConceptsorProvideExamplesThisisoneoftheeasiestwaystousedocumentariesinteaching.Clips(typicallyunderfiveminutesinlength)canserveasbriefexamplesofcomplexconceptsandreinforcewhathasbeencoveredinreadingsandlecture.Forexample,studentsinanabnormalpsychologyorpsychopathologycoursemayreadandhearaboutclinicalsymptomssuchaspressuredspeechandflightofideas.Usingabriefclipofanindividualdemonstratingthesesymptomscanservetostrengthenyourcoverageofthismaterialinclassandreinforcestudentsunderstandingoftheconcepts.Thiscanbedoneintwoways.Ifstudentshavealreadyreadmaterialthatdescribestheconcepts,youmaywanttoshowtheclip,priortodiscussingtheconceptsinclass,anduseitasanopportunitytoassessifstudentsunderstoodthereading

    andrecognizetheconcepts(orinsomecasesiftheydidthereadingatall).Anotherapproachistopresentanddefinetheconceptsandthenshowtheclipasanexample.Eitherway,theuseoftheclipprovidesareallifeexampleoftheconceptsinordertosupplementthereadingandlecture.Althoughthisisahighlyeffectiveuseofdocumentarymaterial,itisimportantnottooverdoitinanyoneclass.YoudontwanttofindyourselfinacircumstancewhereyouneedtocueupmultipleDVDsforoneclasssession.Studentswillloseinterestandyouwilllosealotofclasstime.

    UseofSegmentsoranEntireFilmtoLayaFoundationforUnfamiliarContentStudentsoftenlackexperiencewithorexposuretoarangeoftopicsandissuespresentedinpsychologycourses.Forexample,manystudentsenrolledindevelopmentalpsychologycourseshavehadlittleexposuretoinfants.Usingdocumentarysegments[upto20minutesinlength]ofinfantsinteractingwiththeircaregiversandtheenvironmentaroundthem,canlayafoundationforstudents,ensuringthatatminimum,allstudentsintheclasshavesomeexposureinfantbehavior.Thiscanalsoservetoreinforcewhatiscoveredinlectureandreadings,especiallyifyoureferbackthefilminyourclassexamples.Youmayfindthatyouteachcoursesontopicsthatyourstudentsarelikelytohavelittleknowledgeorunderstandingabout,suchasthepsychologyofhomelessness.Inthisexample,showinganentirefilmthatdepictstheexperiencesofhomelesspeople,howtheymeettheirbasicneeds,andtheimpactthathomelessnesshasontheirphysicalandpsychologicalwellbeingwouldservestudentswellinorientingthemtokeyissuesthatwillbeaddressedinyourcourse.Therawrealismthatadocumentarycanbringtothisissue(andmanyothers)canservetoconnectyourstudentstorealworldhumanchallengesinawaythatdramaticfilmscannot.

    UseofClipsorSegmentstoIntroduceDifficultorControversialIssuesPsychologycoursesoftenaddressissuesofdiversityorcontroversialsubjects(e.g.,ageism,racism,gaymarriage).Usingdocumentaryfilmtointroducethesetopicscaninformstudentslessfamiliarwiththeissuesandprovidematerialfordiscussionandfurtherexploration.Thiscanbeachievedwithoutputtingstudentswhorepresentmarginalizedgroupsorperspectivesinthepositionofeducatingtheirpeersbyusingthemselvesortheiropinionsasexamples.Thisapproachalsoprovidesyouwiththeopportunitytointroduceissuesorperspectivesthatarenotrepresentedinyourclass.

    Itisimportantwhenscreeninganyfilmthatdepictsemotionallyorsocioculturallychargedmaterialthatyouensurethatyouprovideadequateclasstimeforstudentstodiscusswhattheyhaveseen.Itisequallyimportantforyoutohaveenoughtimetocontextualizewhatstudentshaveseenwithrespecttothecoursecontent.InthefollowingsectiononTipsforUsingDocumentariesasTeachingTools,youwillfindadditionalinformationabouthowtomosteffectivelyusedocumentariesinyourclassroomandbeyond.

    Previewfilmsbeforeyoushowtheminclassorassignthemtoyourstudents.While

    documentaryfilmmakersattempttodocumentissues,theyoftenhaveapointofviewandsomemightarguethattheirfilmshaveaparticularslant.Itisthereforeimportantforyoutobefamiliarwiththefilmtoensurethatwhatitdepictsisinlinewithwhatyouhopetoteach.Inaddition,familiaritywiththefilmallowsyoutobeselectiveaboutwhatyoushowinclass.Somefilmscanbequitelong.Showingselectedsegmentsofafilmcanhelpyoutoarticulateyourpointordemonstrateakeyconceptwithouttakinguptoomuchpreciousclasstime.

    Somefilmscontaingraphiccontent,andasaninstructoryoumustdetermineifthecontentisappropriateforyourstudentsandacademicinstitution.Filmsinthisresource

    containinggraphicdepictionsofviolence,sexualcontent,explicitlanguage,etc.areidentifiedwiththesymbolabove.

    ReviewSceneSelectionsprovidedontheDVD.AllofthefilmslistedinthisresourcecontainSceneSelectionsthatcanbeaccessedfromtheMainMenuontheDVD.TheSceneSelectionsbreakupthefilmintosmallerthematicsegments(typically5to10minutesinlength)thatmakeiteasiertonavigatethefilmandareidealforclassroomviewing.

    Testclassroomequipmentbeforeyoushowthefilm.Thereisnothingmorefrustratingforstudentsthantowatchyoufumblearoundwithaudiovisualequipmentnottomentionhowanxietyprovokingitwillbeforyou!Besurethattheequipmentworkstesttheimage,sound,etc.

    Viewthefilmwithyourclass.Watchingthefilmwhileyourstudentsarewatchingitallowsyou

    toobservetheirreactionstothefilmandtoanswerquestionsiftheyarise.Documentariesoftenreferencehistoricaleventsorconceptsthatmaynotbefamiliartoyourstudents.Thisalsogivesyoutheopportunitytopausethefilminordertoaddyourowncommentary.

    Thisdocumentcontainsfilmsthatstreamonline.Insituationswhereyouwillshowonlysegmentsofanentirefilm,itcanbehelpfulforstudentstohavetheopportunitytoviewtheentirefilmontheirown.Althoughitismostdesirabletowatchfilmswithyour

    students,youmaywanttoconsiderassigningfilmstowatchonlineashomework.Thisismosteffectivewhenyouprovidestudentswithsomebackgroundinformationaboutwhattheywillbewatchingandwhy.Providingalistofguidingquestionsasstudentswatchcanbequitehelpfulaswell.Thisapproach,complementedwithsometimetodiscussthefilminclass,canbeaneffectivealternativetousingclasstimetoviewafilm.
