10.9- Civil Rights Laws
• Civil Rights Act of 1964- outlawed discrimination against any individual “because of such individual’s race, color, religion, sex, or national origin”.
• Proposed by John F. Kennedy but passed by Lyndon B. Johnson after Kennedy’s assassination.
Voting Rights
• Even after the Civil Rights Act was passed few African Americans in the South could vote due to unfair election laws.
• Without the vote, black citizens could not expect much progress toward equal rights.
• 1965- MLK organized the march from Selma to Montgomery to encourage African Americans to register to vote.
• They were attacked along the way by Alabama State Troops
Voting Rights Act of 1965
• Outlawed literacy tests and other means used to keep black voters from voting.
• It gave the Federal government the power to send officials to the South to oversee elections and make sure they were fair.
• The number of black voters doubled.
