Narrative Report
“As A Filipino” Learning System is the UnionBank's Gift to the Filipino children and to the Filipino teacher. This Learning System develops pupils' basic reading skills and comprehension, which serves as the foundation for lifelong learning, integrated with Values Education, planting the seeds for moral wisdom.
UnionBank of the Philippines has earmarked P100 million for their As A Filipino Project as part of the Department of Education’s Adopt-A-School Program. They commissioned the As A Filipino Storybook together with a self-instructional Teacher’s Handbook and a Student’s Workbook, for teaching Developmental Reading and Values to early learners. It is anchored on the sixteen Filipino Values enshrined in the Philippine Constitution.
As A Filipino will be used in Grade II as part of their English class for the 2nd up to 4th grading period for this year, pupils will be given free copies of the As A Filipino Student’s Workbook, while their teachers will be given a teacher’s kit composed of the storybook, teacher’s handbook and student’s workbook.
Pinagbuhatan Elementary School supports this program, and as a head start, the launching was held last August 17, 2009, 9 am at the school library together with the school heads, grade II teachers and pupils.
The launching program started with a prayer led by Jennette O. Madi , Grade II Chairman and the Nationalistic song conducted by Ma. Cecille G. Israel. An opening remarks was delivered by Mrs.Nora S. Calingo , Subject Head in English. She welcomed everybody not only for the program itself but for the God given task of molding the youth through the “As a Filipino” learning system.
Mrs. Iluminada C. Lerio , Pinagbuhatan Elementary School Principal, enlightened the children and the teachers of the new learning system. She gave the background and the real objectives of the” As a Filipino.” She gave the bird’s eye view of the activities to be taken up during the “As a Filipino” sessions. Children were encouraged to participate cooperatively with their teachers. And the teachers were challenged to give their best in teaching the content of each lesson in the “As a Filipino” Handbook.
As a response, the teacher representative of Gr. II, Mrs. Mercy D. Ignas promised to give their 101 % in teaching the As a Filipino Lessons. To go beyond what is expected of them and do it first and foremost as an act of serving God, and to guarantee the UnionBank that their effort to build a better citizen will not be wasted.
Selected Grade II pupils gave the audience the taste of what the children will learn in the new learning system. The Children wearing the national costume sang the “As a Filipino” song.
Mrs. Wilma S. De Guzman, Subject Head in Filipino and In-Charge of gr. II, gave her parting words, encouraging the teachers to be effective in implementing the “As a Filipino” Learning system.
The books were distributed to the children and teachers after the program. Prepared by:
