NORTH EAST FILM ARCHIVE PRESENT… MIDDLESBROUGH ON FILM 2 MIDDLESBROUGH TOWN HALL Thurs 16 Oct | 7pm • £2.50Approx. 90 Minutes

Thanks to the kind assistance of Middlesbrough and Teesside Philanthropic Foundation the North East Film Archive have delved into their vaults again to bring to the Town Hall big screen a new selection of nostalgic footage from Middlesbrough and the Teesside area. The new screening will feature local Cleveland Cine Club productions, 1935 Silver Jubilee celebrations, 1960s Tyne Tees News items and a number of films exploring the local industries of Smith’s Dock, the Lackenby works of Dorman Long and ICI Billingham. Throw in some 1950s holidays at Redcar and Saltburn, footage of the River Tees and the iconic Transporter Bridge and it’s set to be another popular evening celebrating Middlesbrough’s rich film heritage.

Victorian Cities Revisited Heritage and History Conference seeks to explore the legacy of Asa Briggs’ landmark Victorian Cities by considering how the heritage and history sectors have explored and revised perceptions of this period of vast urban transformation.In partnership with the University of Huddersfield, Victorian Cities Revisited is part of the £2.6m Heritage Lottery Fund supported Tees Transporter Bridge Visitor Experience Project. The Conference includes optional visits to a number of heritage sites in the town including the landmark Tees Transporter Bridge.

MAGICAL HISTORY TOUR DORMAN MUSEUMSat 18 Oct10am - 4pm • FREE

Journey back in time in our restored Middlesbrough Corporation double decker bus. Middlesbrough No 99 is a special bus built for the “M” service. It was exhibited at the 1958 Commercial Motor Show and has been lovingly restored by the 500 Group.

The Magical History Tour commences at the Dorman Museum and visits a number of places – both old and new – en-route, taking in modern developments, iconic buildings and some of Middlesbrough’s most interesting sites not normally visited by public transport.

There will be an opportunity for lunch and some walking is involved. We will return to the Dorman Museum by 4pm. Suitable for all ages (children to be accompanied by adults)

LINTHORPE CEMETERY WW1 COMMEMORATION

The Friends of Linthorpe Cemetery invite you to a short service of remembrance and march through the cemetery to commemorate the 161 WW1soldiers, sailors and airmen buried here and the many more remembered on family headstones. The march will be led by the Royal British Legion, cadets from the three armed services and local Scout groups through the cemetery to the Hebrew Prayer House where there will be an exhibition of WW1 memorabilia, cakes provided by the W.I. and light refreshments.

If you’ve ever walked around Saltholme and thought to yourself “I wonder....” then this walk has probably got the answer. Our knowledgeable and friendly volunteers will give you a potted history of the reserve and its surroundings as well as information on the wildlife that you see on the reserve. From plants to butterflies to birds, these well informed guides will leave you with a better understanding of Saltholme’s industrial heritage, as well as how the reserve is managed for the flora and fauna that  now call it home. From the novice naturalist to the seasoned birder, all are welcome on this interesting and informative walk.The walk can take up to three hours, suitable outdoor clothing is essential. Mobility scooter is available on request (pre booking highly recommended).

Come along and enjoy a stroll around our 160 acre farm, see our cattle, sheep and chickens, and enjoy lunch in our café. Keep your eyes open and you will also see our new house being built on site. Take the opportunity to see our craft workshop in action and the display of craft work for sale.

A WALK INTO THE HISTORY OF FAIRY DELL AND GUNNERGATE HALL FAIRY DELL PARK, GUNNERGATE LANE, MARTON/COULBY NEWHAM, TS8 0TEThurs 23 Oct | 2pm - 4pm Thurs 30 Oct | 10am - 12pmFREE

We will explore the history of Fairy Dell and explain the findings from the Medieval and Victorian periods unearthed at the recent archaeological dig by Tees Archaeology, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund. The walk will follow a variety of paths, including steep slopes and steps making certain sections unsuitable for wheelchairs and children’s buggies. Wear appropriate shoes for walking.

Meet at the main entrance to Fairy Dell Park on Gunnergate Lane. Free parking is available nearby.

John Wheeler’s exhibition “LIMINAL” at Python gallery showcases brand new work from this intriguing artist, who is currently working as part of the Middlesbrough based Gilkes Street Artists group. John’s abstract woodblock prints use the Japanese ‘moku hanga’ (simply wood print) method of creating prints.

John describes the process as seeking to find “beauty in imperfection through images of calmness and simplicity.”

Exhibition runs until 28 November

The observer is taken on a journey of discovery from the source of the River Tees at Crossfell to the estuary at Redcar and Hartlepool, giving a flavour of an area that is worthy of further exploration.

A new theatrical night-time outdoor performance created for audiences of up to 3,000 people. It has been specially commissioned by Arts Council and the five Tees Valley borough councils, to commemorate 100 years since the outbreak of World War 1. The show will explore stories of how local people’s lives were affected by the war and the roles that they took in it – as soldiers, nurses, munitions’ workers and so on – both on the home front and on foreign battlefields. The show content will be created from research materials gathered about the Great War by local libraries and archivists, including interviews with local residents.
