LondonThe Swingin’ 60’s Ask a lot of people, especially if they’re under
the age of 50, what they know about the 1960’s and they’ll probably answer with social unrest, hippies, Woodstock and the Vietnam War. But for those of us who lived through it, there was another, earlier part of the 60’s known as the Mod Generation. The Beatles were gods to us and anything British was the best. American boys pleaded with their parents for permission to grow their hair over their ears, and affected very bad British accents. Girls shortened their skirts, first to mini and then micro mini lengths,
to the exasperation of both parents and school principals. The dream for most women was to go to Carnaby Street in their plastic Go Go boots, buy some clothes at Mary Quant, have their hair done at Vidal Sassoon, stop for tea with Twiggy and Lulu and then Froog the night away at a discotheque listening to the latest hits by the Fab Four, The Dave Clark Five and The Rascals. Note: for those of you over 60, don’t pretend you don’t remember every one of these references.
SHOUT! The Mod Musical is a celebration of that period, and particu-larly of the fantastic female vocalists of the early 60’s. Some, like Petula Clark, Lulu, and Dusty Springfield, produced hit after hit and their names are still very well known and recognized. Others had one very big hit and then slipped into obscurity. But though their names may not be remembered, the songs they made popular have never been forgotten. SHOUT! doesn’t pretend to revolutionize modern theatre, or make a strong social or political statement. It just wants to take you on a short journey to the past, hopefully to re-live some favorite musical memories, and most importantly to entertain you.
Hope you enjoy the show, hope you have a “fab” time and always re-member, please don’t sleep in the subway, darling! And, wear a mask!
