Dear Diamond Families,
It is so hard to believe that we are wrapping up the first half of the year. The children have worked so hard and done so well. I am very proud of them. We have much to do and learn for the second half so I hope they come back ready after the break.
Please enjoy the holidays with family and friends. I hope you all find some downtime to just be with each other. This is also the season for gift giving. Pardon my shameless plug, but I highly recommend giving books as gifts to your children. Books are so magical and when shared with a
parent, they become a warm memory. Some of my favorite moments with my own children are those times when we curled up and read a book together. The teachers at Diamond require that our students read nightly. While they would never assign
homework over the break, I still highly encourage reading even over the holiday. It becomes a habit when you continue to do it nightly—and the cuddle time is the bonus! Just in case you are not convinced, I would like to share the chart below that demonstrates the benefits to reading 20 minutes nightly.
Have a blessed holiday break and we will see you in 2017! Laura LaChance

UUGGGG!!!! That bug is back! Have you had the stomach and headache symptoms? Did
you know that the single most effective way to keep your family healthy and prevent sick-
ness is a GOOD HANDWASHING? Keep in mind that not all hand washings are created
equal… Are you doing it RIGHT?!! Chances are that you are not. Here are the guidelines
from the CDC:
Wet your hands with clean, running water (warm or cold), turn
off the tap, and apply soap.
Lather your hands by rubbing them together with the soap. Be
sure to lather the backs of your hands, between your fingers, and
under your nails.
Scrub your hands for at least 20 seconds. Need a timer? Hum
the "Happy Birthday" song from beginning to end twice.
Rinse your hands well under clean, running water.
Dry your hands using a clean towel or air dry them.
Teach your entire family how to wash their hands the right way
and stay healthy!!
**Reminder: DoDEA is requiring each student to be immunized against the flu this year.
It’s not too late! The flu virus is most active in December and January so there’s still time to
protect your family.

ART
~ Ms. Mock ~
Students are in the process of completing all
“warm color” related projects. Among those pro-
jects are wise, old owl artworks with vibrant, Au-
tumn-colored sunset backgrounds for some of the
younger students. Meanwhile, the older students
are completing their very dramatic, realistic, fall
trees with bare branches, falling leaves, and moons
against a very dark night sky. We will be using
multi-mediums such as watercolors and India ink.
Students will begin winter-related arts & craft ac-
tivities and will be slowly introduced to cooler-
toned colors such as blues, greens, and purples.
They will also be introduced to one or more of the
other basic elements of Art.
The students’ art con-
tinues to amaze me!
Every single day, I am
reminded of exactly
why I am here! I am
honored to share my
love of Art with your
precious children!

EDUCATION TECHNOLOGY
~ Ms. Myers ~
Greetings, Gator Parents! We live in a world surrounded by technology! And we know that whatever profes-
sional field of work our students choose to go into as adults, their ability to succeed will
increasingly depend on understanding how technology works.
But only a tiny fraction of us are learning how technology works. Fewer than half of all
schools teach computer science.
That is why our entire school is joining in on the largest learning event in history: The
Hour of Code, during Computer Science Education Week (December 5-9). More than
100 million students worldwide have already tried an Hour of Code.
Our Hour of Code is making a statement that Diamond Elementary School is ready to teach these foundational
21st century skills. To continue bringing programming activities to your students, we want to make our Hour
of Code event HUGE! I encourage you to volunteer, reach out to local media, share the news on social media
channels, and consider hosting additional Hour of Code events within the community. This is a chance to
change the future of education!!
Click here Hour of Code for more details, and help spread the word!
