Define the Problem (ask)

• Clearly state the problem

– Problem statement

– Needs assessment

– Design criteria & goals

– Research

Solution Possibilities (imagine)• Brainstorm

• Ideation

• Creative Thinking

Evaluation of Solutions (plan)• Do the ideas meet the design criteria?

• List advantages / disadvantages

• Assessment tool for the solutions

• Decision Matrix

• Select best design

Test Solution (create)

• Build solution

• Technical Drawings

• Prototype

• Models

• Performance

• User Testing

Modify (Improve) Solution

• Design problems (errors) fixes

• Improvement of design from data assessment

• Is more testing required?

• Worse case – trash and start over

Final Solution

• Final Drawings of solution

• Manuals for users and assembly

• Operation guide

• Maintenance requirements

Challenge

• Design a structure to hold up as many books as possible 1 ½” to 2’’ off the ground for a minimum of 10 seconds, using only the material provided:

– 10 sheets of paper

– 5 paper clips

• 10 minutes to come up with and document designs

• 6 minutes to build

• 4 minutes to test and adjust design

• Assessment of final solutions in 20 minutes
