A REPORT ON
“MAKING OF GANESH IDOLS FROM SHADU SOIL”
14th
August 2018
ORGANIZED BY
DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL ENGINEERING
FOREWARD
Ganesh Chaturthi is a festival celebrated across India to honour Lord Ganesh. The purpose of
Ganesh Chaturthi in pre independence era by LokmanyaTilak served its purpose with greater
effect and its purpose in present day has lost completely. Needless to say about Enviromental
pollution, noise pollution and commercialization. Traditionally, Ganesh idols are made from
Plaster of Paris and are immersed in water during this festival, which pollutes the water.Idols
made of Plaster of Paris are non-biodegradable and it causes harm by killing the aquatic lives and
increasing the acid content of the water. Moreover with impure and dirty water, humans also get
infected with dangerous ailments. Plaster of Paris and other artificial colors can cause health
issues.
Owing to these effects, many campaigns are conducted so as to make the common man aware of
the consequences of using non-biodegradable products. Religious believes are to be followed
with immense purity not only for ourselves, but also for the nature.Commercialization of
religious festivals has a positive influence in nurturing communal sense but when the celebration
ends and the environment suffers, the masses need to re-evaluate their outlook. It's important to
adapt our beliefs and traditions to the current environmental scenario and aim to conserve what is
left.
Thus in view of sustainable environment, we the Civil Engineering Department organized an
event viz."Ganesh Idol from Shadu Soil" under Environmental Club on 14th
August 2018.
Shadu clay is an eco-friendly material as it doesn’t cause pollution and is fastest to dissolve in
water ultimately not harming the environment. Our aim was to spread, awareness amongst
people about using eco-friendly materials and expertise all in making Ganpati idols & worship
them in festival instead of regular Plaster of Paris idol.

About the Program
Ganesh Idol from Shadu Soil aims at use of Shadu Soil which impart less adverse effect on
environment as compared to Plaster of Paris. As Ganesh Chaturthi is invariably celebrated across
India, It drastically increases the demand of POP for making Ganesh Idol. This eventually leads
to many adverse consequences on environment such as river pollution etc. To avoid use of POP
and make aware about its effects on environment, this program was scheduled. Shadu soil is
better alternative to POP which indeed serve the purpose without causing any harm to
environment. Environmental Club of Civil Engineering Department had this inception in mind
that provided a platform to outshine the art with eco-friendly materials.
