WELCOME TO DELAWARE COLLEGE OF ART AND DESIGN!
We’re glad you’re interested in us because we’re interested in
you. We want to know what you want to make, and we want to
help you become the maker you want to be.
Our interest in you translates into an educational experience
you wouldn’t get from another college. At DCAD, we’ll know
your name, your work and what you need to help you realize
your vision.
We’ve already put our more than 1,000 graduates on the
path to realizing theirs, whether that meant transferring into
the four-year school of their dreams or going right to work
as a creative professional with a DCAD associate’s degree. If
you visit the “Meet DCAD Alumni” page of dcad.edu, you’ll see
that they’re game developers, painters, muralists, sculptors,
printmakers, brand developers, paper engineers, art directors,
creative directors, web designers, cartoonists, tattoo artists,
interior designers, filmmakers, videographers, editors,
educators, curators, gallery owners, entrepreneurs, non-profit
founders, researchers and, believe it or not, the director of a
chimpanzee sanctuary in Africa.
No matter their destination, all of our students benefit
from DCAD’s rigorous courses, small class sizes and close-knit
campus community. They receive individualized studio
instruction, one-on-one mentoring and real-world internship
opportunities. They focus on their major work in animation,
fine arts, graphic design, illustration or photography right
from the start. They study with a faculty of working artists
and designers to improve their skills quickly, develop a
personal voice and style and build the confidence to succeed.
And so will you.
We really do have something special at DCAD, and I invite
you to come and be part of our small, smart and spirited
community. Schedule a personalized visit by contacting the
Office of Admissions at [email protected] or 302-622-8000.

During the first year, students enroll in Foundation Year – a core group of courses
designed to develop visual literacy and basic studio techniques and emphasize an
understanding of the concepts and principles of the visual arts. Schedules are
divided between 70% studio courses and 30% liberal arts courses, which use materials,
concepts and skills that students can apply to their major of study in the second year.
During the sophomore year, students concentrate on their major course of study and
take both studio and liberal arts courses.
Students enrolled in DCAD’s AFA Degree Program receive thorough preparation for
transfer into Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree Programs at a multitude of art and design
colleges across the globe. Completion of requirements for the AFA may be accomplished
through two years of full-time study.

First-year DCAD students lay the groundwork for their future in art and design while exploring
the fundamentals of making and learning to use state-of-the-industry facilities and equipment.
The Associate of Fine Arts Degree Program requires a core group of foundation courses that all
students take, regardless of major. Studio classes focus on drawing, color theory and two-, three-
and four-dimensional design, which includes learning, creating and networking at Wilmington’s
high-tech NextFab makerspace. In addition, “Foundation Seminar” introduces the documentation
and presentation skills and technological capabilities required for self-promotion as an artist
or designer. The foundation experience enables students to cultivate visual literacy and basic
techniques, become familiar with art history and understand the underlying concepts and
principles of the visual arts. Throughout their foundation year, students work with technology,
materials, concepts and skills that they later apply in their major studies.

Students who focus on two-dimensional animation use traditional and digital
means to create effective designs and communicate compelling stories in a
moving 2-D medium. Techniques and styles explored include hand-drawn, under
the camera, stop-motion, digital cel and rotoscoping processes to produce dynamic
animated sequences. Students work individually and collaboratively to complete
projects to develop skills to control timing and spacing of objects and assets to
improve movement, weight and performance.
Students who focus on three-dimensional animation have the opportunity to
develop skills in 3-D modeling, texturing and lighting as well as in the fundamentals
of rigging and movement in a 3-D environment. They learn critical computer skills
and time-honored animation principles and engage in life-drawing exercises to better
understand proportions, volume and line in relation to their own designs.
All animation students investigate alternate modes of making moving images with
live-action and motion-media projects. They also explore standardized theories and
contemporary practices through liberal arts courses that emphasize the history of
animation, film and art.

COURSE OFFERINGS: ART HISTORY I, II, III, READING & COMPOSITION, WRITING FOR THE ARTS AND WRITING ABOUT MODERN LITERATURE
LIBERAL ARTS CURRICULUM
Liberal arts studies at DCAD revolve around a core of art history, literature and
writing. As a college of art and design, we recognize that a strong foundation
in the humanities is essential for all aspiring artists and designers. That is why
every student is required to take liberal arts courses to complete the AFA degree.
Each major offers students a three-semester survey of global art history, as well as
courses focused on writing and literature. Upon completion of these core courses,
students also take major-specific classes and an elective focused on specialized
topics in art, literature and writing, culture and society. As courses progress,
students build skills in academic writing, research and critical inquiry designed
to prepare them for further study in their chosen fields of study.
LEARNING OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOM
A fundamental component of DCAD’s liberal arts program is providing students
with opportunities to experience content presented in class in out-of-classroom
situations. Each DCAD art history course includes at least one required visit to
a world-class museum in New York, Philadelphia or Washington, D.C., where
students see and study works reviewed and discussed in class. Often, these
college-wide trips are tied to students’ studio coursework and serve as vital
sources of creative inspiration across the curriculum. On campus, DCAD offers
students the chance to hear about real-world experiences during Common Hour
presentations featuring guest speakers from various artistic fields and
creative professions.
LIBERAL ARTS SYMPOSIUM
A favorite event occurring each year is the College’s Liberal Arts Symposium.
All students produce formal research papers as the capstone of their liberal arts
survey coursework. A team of liberal arts instructors reviews the papers before
selecting the very best to be presented at the annual symposium. First- and
second-year students, faculty, administration, staff and honored guests are
invited to attend this springtime celebration of DCAD scholarship.
Liberal Arts
The liberal arts curriculum comprises three chronological surveys of art history, writing and literature, and several general education electives designed to develop effective written and oral communication skills, promote critical thinking, and encourage exploration of various creative, cultural and intellectual disciplines.

AT THE HEART OF WILMINGTON’S CREATIVE
District are the two city blocks that make up
DCAD’s creative campus.
Inside the Art Deco-style academic building on
Market Street you’ll find six floors of studio,
lecture, extracurricular and support services
space. Academic features include an animation
studio with imaging stations; drawing, painting,
printmaking, sculpture, illustration and design
studios filled with natural light; Mac and PC
computer labs; and a darkroom and photography
studios. Supplementing these learning spaces are
the 18,500-item Edgar A. Thronson Library, the
Writers Studio, a presentation hall, a counseling
center and the Toni & Stuart B. Young Gallery.
Completing the intimate campus are two
residence halls, one on Market Street and the
other on King Street. In addition to students,
these house the cafeteria, the student center,
a TV lounge and the student gallery.
Just off campus, students frequently visit
Market Street-area sites to complete their
class assignments. Fine arts and foundations
classes regularly use Delaware Historical
Society properties such the Old Town Hall
Museum and Willingtown Square as settings
for drawing exercises. Illustration majors
routinely model for one another against the
backdrop of Market Street businesses. And
animation and photography majors can often
be found capturing still and moving images
involving streetscapes, the city skyline and
architectural elements.
Also nearby is the NextFab makerspace, where
our students learn three-dimensional design.
Using technology such as laser cutters,
they create pieces that demonstrate their
understanding of line, plane, space, mass,
balance and proportion as applied to
visual expression.
DCAD’s location also means students are able
to enhance their studies with internships,
part-time jobs or volunteer work within a
walkable distance. For example, The Delaware
Contemporary, the Greater Wilmington
Convention and Visitors Bureau, Rodney Street
Tennis and Tutoring Association, Al’s Sporting
Goods and M&T Bank are just a few of the local
businesses and organizations that employ
student interns from DCAD.

Most first-year resident students live in the
single-, double- or triple-occupancy rooms
of THE 707 RESIDENCE HALL, which is a block
and a half from DCAD’s academic building at
707 N. King St. The campus dining hall, the
707 Café, is on the first floor and offers both
residents and commuters eat-in and grab-

and gluten-free options.
The 707 also contains a TV lounge and a
quiet study lounge. See the diagram at
right for an example of a 707 suite.
THE SAVILLE RESIDENCE HALL, located
across from DCAD’s academic building at
the corner of Sixth and Market streets,
typically houses second-year students in
double, triple or quad suites that include
kitchenettes. The Tatiana Copeland Student
Center occupies the first floor and offers
space for student-curated gallery shows
along with game tables, study and lounge
space and a serving counter for events.
See the diagrams at right for an example
of a Saville suite.
Vending machines and a free laundry room
are located in both residence halls, which are
locked 24 hours a day and may be accessed
only with an electronic key fob. Further
safety and support is provided by the RAs
who live in each building.
RESIDENCE life
Delaware College of Art and Design knows that to do their best
work and be able to enjoy their free time, students need to feel
heard and supported. Administration and faculty members
maintain a daily open-door policy, and open forums with
the president and dean are scheduled regularly.
To further this atmosphere of concern, respect and
understanding, DCAD offers the following support initiatives:
PREFERRED NAME PROGRAM: Students who prefer to identify
themselves by a first name different from their legal name may
formally request the use of their preferred name both inside and
outside class. This includes DCAD email and class rosters.
COUNSELING CENTER: Students who want to talk to someone
about behavioral, mental and emotional health issues are urged
to take advantage of DCAD’s on-campus counseling resources.
Counselors from Connections Community Support Programs Inc.
are available by appointment to anyone who needs help.
SERVICE AND EMOTIONAL SUPPORT ANIMALS: DCAD complies
with Fair Housing Act and Americans with Disabilities Act
guidelines as they pertain to official service and emotional
support animals. With documentation and Student Services
approval, these assistance animals are permitted as a reasonable
accommodation for those students with a diagnosed physical
or mental condition.
GENDER-NEUTRAL HOUSING: DCAD is committed to providing
safe, welcoming and inclusive housing options for all students.
The Gender-Neutral Housing Policy allows two or more students
to occupy a single living space regardless of biological sex,
gender identity or gender expression.
STUDENTS COME TO DCAD TO MAKE STUFF. But while here,
they also want to do stuff.
DCAD OFFERS MANY RECREATIONAL and social opportunities
throughout the year. On-campus activities include major events
such as October’s Spirit Week, which features a costume parade
with prizes, a poster design contest and a pumpkin-carving
competition, and monthly exhibitions in the Toni & Stuart B.
Young Gallery and the Tatiana Copeland Student Center Gallery.
Other events include annual Drawing Marathons and Liberal Arts
Symposia; career talks and studio critiques by regionally and
nationally known art and design professionals, many of whom
are DCAD alumni; and art exchanges, “crafternoons” and open-mic,
game and movie nights.
STUDENT CLUBS AND GROUPS often plan additional activities.
These organizations form based on current student interests.
In addition to the Student Gallery Club and the Animation Club,
some of the most popular groups have been based around yoga,
video games, American Sign Language and writing. Recent
additions have included a student programming and advocacy
board, an LGBTQ+ organization and a community service club.
OFF-CAMPUS HAPPENINGS INCLUDE bus trips to renowned art
museums in New York City and Washington, D.C., each semester
and co-curricular visits to area galleries, attractions and transfer
schools in Wilmington, Philadelphia and Baltimore. DCAD resident
assistants also lead outings for dining, shopping, entertainment
and athletic activities, often in and around the Creative District
and Wilmington Riverfront areas.

in a studio class session. Wilmington is the mid-point along this
cultural pipeline, and its location puts you within two hours
of D.C. and NYC, about hour of B’more and about 40 minutes of
Philly. Within those same travel parameters lie the Delaware,
Maryland and New Jersey beaches and the Pocono Mountains.
Even closer are the popular Brandywine Valley attractions,
including Longwood Gardens, Winterthur and the Delaware
Museum of Natural History. Works on view in the Brandywine
River Museum and the Delaware Art Museum by Howard Pyle,
Jessie Wilcox Smith, Frank Schoonover, Harvey Dunn and N.C.,
Andrew and Jamie Wyeth reflect Greater Wilmington’s status as
the birthplace of both American illustration and an American
art dynasty.
In walking distance of Delaware College of Art and Design,
located in the heart of Wilmington’s Creative District, are The
Delaware Contemporary, a center for visual arts; Theatre N, the
city’s home for art, indie and documentary film; and The
Queen, Christina Cultural Arts Center, The Grand Opera House
and The Playhouse on Rodney Square, which are venues for
live music, comedy, dance, theater and other performing arts.
Also nearby are Brandywine Park and Zoo, Blue Rocks Stadium,
Constitution Yards Beer Garden and Games, Riverwalk
Mini-Golf, Riverfront Ice Rink, Altitude Trampoline Park,
Delaware Nature Society’s DuPont Environmental Education
Center and the Delaware Center for Horticulture.
Wilmington events held around DCAD include the annual
Brandywine Festival of the Arts, the monthly Art Loop
Wilmington and the weekly seasonal Rodney Square Farmers
Market and Creative District Rock Lot activities. Indoor
and outdoor celebrations are held by various organizations
throughout the year as well.
Local shopping ranges from thrift shops to high-end boutiques,
with tax-free Delaware malls just quick rides away. Dining for
every kind of cuisine and price point is easily accessible as
well. Students can walk to the Wilmington Amtrak and SEPTA
station for trips outside Delaware, and the DART bus system
operates throughout the city and state.
WELCOME TO WILMINGTON
Within two hours of some of the world’s greatest art collections sits Wilmington, Delaware.

PORTFOLIO
A portfolio of artwork is required for admission into DCAD’s
Associate of Fine Arts Degree Program. Applicants must
demonstrate their ability in the areas of drawing, composition,
color and design, and select their best artwork completed within
the last two years. The portfolio should include 10 to 15 pieces of
original artwork. The balance of the portfolio can include artwork
in various media and styles. This might include pastel, pen and
ink, watercolor, oil or acrylic paint, animation, film and black
and white or color photography. All applicants are encouraged to
visit the College in person for a portfolio review and tour of the
College. Applicants who cannot visit in person may forward a
digital portfolio to the DCAD Admissions Office through Slideroom.
Applicants are also encouraged to bring their sketchbook.
If submitting 3-D work such as sculpture or ceramics, please
bring photographs instead of the actual work to prevent damage.
Remember to limit the portfolio to a maximum of 15 pieces.
SLIDEROOM
Applicants who are unable to arrange a personal portfolio review
at DCAD may submit their portfolio by uploading their images to
DCAD’s Slideroom account at https://dcad.slideroom.com.
For a $10 fee, Slideroom allows the applicant to submit up to
20 still images, or a combination of still images and video.
HIGH SCHOOL TRANSCRIPTS
Official high school transcripts or GED must be sent to the DCAD
Admissions Office for admission consideration. Transcripts
should reflect a traditional college-preparatory curriculum and,
if offered, a wide variety of art and design courses taken while
in high school. A final high school transcript with graduation
date or equivalent is required prior to entering DCAD. Students
may request a transcript directly from their school counselor or
registrar or request online via Parchment.com.
LETTER OF RECOMMENDATION
A letter of recommendation is requested from an art teacher or
academic teacher. For students who have been out of school for
three years or more, a letter from someone who knows you in a
professional manner is acceptable. Letters may be mailed directly
to the DCAD Admissions Office, emailed to: [email protected]
or faxed to 302.622.8870.
SAT OR ACT SCORES
The submission of SAT or ACT scores is highly recommended,
though not required. Applicants should ensure that all
standardized test scores (SAT or ACT), if available, are included
with their transcripts or sent directly through the testing center.
DCAD’s CEEB code for The College Board is 5161.
COLLEGE TRANSCRIPTS
Students who have completed college courses must forward
official transcripts from all colleges attended, whether or not they
think the credit is transferable. Equivalent courses completed
with a “C” grade or higher at accredited colleges or universities
will be reviewed and evaluated for transfer credit into the DCAD
curriculum. DCAD’s transfer credit policy is available in the
College’s online catalog.
INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS
The diverse student population and close proximity to New York
City, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C., is ideal for students
studying from abroad. International students find that the
small classes and friendly environment of DCAD allow them
to maximize artistic achievement and success. The rolling
admissions policy is also in effect for international applicants.
Merit Scholarships are offered to qualified international students.
Non-U.S. citizens living abroad are encouraged to contact DCAD
to learn more about the admissions process. The Director of
Admissions and Registrar serve as the International Student
Advisors as well, providing information about visas and serving as
a liaison for international students. In addition to the application
materials indicated above, international students must also
supply certified English translations of all their academic records
and TOEFL scores.
APPLICATION DEADLINE
DCAD offers an Early Action Application deadline of December
1 for students requesting an admission decision prior to
January 1 of their senior year. Priority consideration for DCAD
Merit Scholarships is given to students whose applications are
completed by March 15. After March 15, applications are
accepted on a rolling admissions basis until August 1. Students
who decide to attend DCAD must submit a tuition deposit to
secure their enrollment. Deposits are refundable
until May 1.
TOEFL
International students, whose first language is not English,
must submit Test of English as a Foreign Language ( TOEFL )
results. A minimum score of 79 IBT is required for acceptance
to DCAD. Specify DCAD’s school code of 5443 for TOEFL score
reporting. The TOEFL requirement may be waived for students
successfully completing college-level English composition at
an accredited U.S. college or university, if a student’s only
language of instruction has been English for three or more
years, or where a student has a minimum verbal score of 500
on the SAT.
STUDYING ENGLISH
