Illinois Lincoln Highway Interpretive Murals Relive the thrill of discovery that motorists experienced 100 years ago, as you uncover a past era woven together with the present along the Illinois Lincoln Highway, where every mile is a
story. Rediscover the charm of a road trip to enjoy our murals and gazebos.
Illinois Lincoln Highway Interpretive Gazebos There are 16 Illinois Lincoln Highway Coalition Gazebos across the Illinois route; enclosed interpretive panels offer
visitors intriguing stories and graphics, depicting the significance of the Lincoln Highway and its communities.
For a complete list of murals and gazebos visit: drivelincolnhighway.com
55 West Lincoln Highway, Cortland This mural vividly conveys the early era of road construction in Cortland. An image of the area and the crew that were contracted to supply gravel for the pavement project are the designs main elements.
Corner of Lincoln Highway and Seventh Street, DeKalb A detailed image of travelers in a 1913 Stevens-Duryea, a high-end touring car of its time, is the centerpiece of this mural. The mural’s border is cut and painted to represent the City of DeKalb’s memorial brick arch.
104 West Main Street, GenoaDepicted in the mural is a road dragging contest during the Good Roads Movement in the early 1900’s. A “sled” being dragged by a team of horses to smooth the road is the featured component used to tell the story.
127 North Third Street, MaltaThe mural gives striking detail of paving the Lincoln Highway’s first seedling mile, strategically located in Malta. Strong images of men doing the cement work and early road construction equipment are featured in the mural.
302 Willow Street, Maple ParkThis mural depicts the development of the Lincoln Highway and how it changed the look of America as roadside gasoline stations sprung up along the route in every town to accommodate motorists. By the
1920’s this filling station in Maple Park was a welcome site to drivers.

The first DeKalb Kite Fest was held on September 6, 2006. This amazing event came to be because an 8 year old boy, Nathan Overman wrote a letter to then Mayor Frank Van Buer expressing his desire to bring his love of kiting to his hometown, DeKalb. According to Nathan, he broke one of his kites and his mom started looking online for ways to repair it. The Overman family would fly smaller kites in the parks around DeKalb County, so they were already avid kite enthusiasts when they started to attend festivals in other cities. At these festivals, they made friends with various people they met and became part of the kite enthusiast community. They purchased their first four line kite from Dave Zavell and another instant friendship was formed.
Dave Zavell owns and operates Chicago Kite. Dave, the Overmans and Chuck Siebrasse, Executive Director of the DeKalb Chamber, teamed up to bring the first kite festival to DeKalb. Around 300 people attended that first year.
This year, we celebrate the 10th Annual DeKalb Kite Fest. It has become one of the largest kite festivals in Illinois. Our bureau organizes the event with Doug Nelson, Kite Fest Chair. Attendance has grown to more than 4,000. It draws visitors from surrounding states and the suburbs.
Dave Zavell continues to recruit our kite family, who come every year to share their joy of flying kites with us. We couldn’t do it without them, our sponsors and the community volunteers.
One of the most anticipated activities is the kite candy drop. Yes, the candy drops from a kite! Many of the signature kites are at least 90 feet in length. We have families and visitors that anxiously await the Second Sunday in September to experience the joy of watching all the beautiful kites flying and dancing over the skies of DeKalb County.
Thank you, Nathan, for getting us started on this path. Your love for kiting is still being shared with both new and old friends that come together the Second Sunday in September.
