Pacific Symphony to perform Messiah!Rejoice in the inspired melodies and
theatrical mastery of Handel’s GloriousMessiah when Pacific Symphony performsthe Baroque masterpiece as a festive preludeto Christmas and the celebration of Christ’sbirth. Austrian conductor ChristophCampestrini leads the Symphony along withPacific Chorale and a host of globallydistinguished soloists including sopranoKatherine Whyte, mezzo-soprano ClaireShackleton, tenor Steven Tharp and baritoneRichard Zeller. The performance takes placeat the Renée and Henry Segerstrom ConcertHall on Sunday, Dec. 14, at 3 p.m. For moreinformation or to purchase tickets, call 714-755-5799 or visit www.PacificSymphony.org.
“It is always a great joy for me to conductthis beautiful masterpiece,” says MaestroCampestrini. “It is such a moving experienceto tell together with the soloists, the chorusand the orchestra the ancient story of Jesus’life, expressed in this most personal artisticstatement of Handel. He had just recoveredfrom a stroke when he set these words to
music, and the gratitude for having regainedhis health again is deeply felt in this music.”
Handel was born at the peak of theBaroque era, and he produced many operasbefore creating Messiah. He was known asthe “master of sacred and secular music.” Histalent for composing for voice and instrumentshines in this most famous oratorio throughthe telling of Christ’s narrative.
“This work has the great spiritual depth ofa liturgical masterwork, but as Handel wasalso one of the most prominent operacomposers of his time, it also contains thedrama and excitement of a fascinating andthrilling story,” says Campestrini.
“To keep a musical work fresh is one of themost important challenges for any performer,”says Campestrini. “In Baroque music it is alsoquite fascinating to study what early musicgroups have done in their exploration of thisrepertoire and to incorporate some of theseelements also in performances of traditionalsymphony orchestras.”
