PleasebeinformedthatONEstudentfrom8CwasdiagnosedConjunctivitis(pinkeye)today.

Conjunctivitisisaninflammationoftheconjunctiva,theprotectivemembranethatlinesthe

innereyelidsandcoverstheouterpartoftheeyeballs.Themostcommonformisacute

infectiousconjunctivitiswhichismostlycausedbybacteriaandviruses.

Clinically,bacterialandviralconjunctivitisareverysimilar.Botheyesareoftenaffectedbutthe

symptomsusuallystartinoneeye.Thedischargeisthick,whitishoryellowishinbacterial

conjunctivitis,andwateryinviralconjunctivitis.Symptomsincludetearing,foreignbody

sensation,itchiness,pain,swellingandrednessoftheeyes,andsensitivitytolight.

Theincubationperiodis1-3daysafterexposureforbacterialconjunctivitis;1-12daysfor

viralconjunctivitis.Conjunctivitisisusuallymildandself-limiting,recoveryoccursin1to2

weeks'timeifproperlytreated.Infectioncanoccuratallages,howeverchildrenunder5are

mostfrequentlyaffected.

Conjunctivitisishighlycontagiousandistransmittedthroughdirectcontactwithdischarge

fromtheeyes,orindirectlythroughcontaminatedfingers,clothings,anduseofcontaminated

articles,suchassharedtowelsandtopicaleyemedications.Inordertopreventthespreadof

Conjunctivitis,theschoolwouldsuggestthefollowinginterventions:

-Keepyourchildhomeifhe/sheisshowingsymptomsofConjunctivitis.

-Maintaingoodpersonalhygiene,handwashingbeforeandaftercontactwitheyes.

-Avoidhand-eyecontact.

-Donotsharetowelsandotherpersonalitems.

-Avoidsharingeyedrops,eyemedicines,orotheritemsthatmaycomeintocontactwiththeeyes.
