SACRAMENTO NATURAL FOODS CO-OP Ken got in touch with Jolie, the Education Outreach Manager, and arranged a tour of their new
location downtown. Jolie and fellow tour guide Christina met us in the produce section where we learned about the benefits of natural, organic, and sustainably farmed foods. The Co-Op works with local farmers who provide fresh, farm-to-fork produce and humanely raised animals. They also partner with Fish-Wise, a non-profit organization that promotes the health and recovery of ocean ecosystems through environ-mentally responsible business practices and sustainable seafood offerings. As we explored the store,
they offered us free tasting samples of several interesting products such as Blood Oranges, Kombu-cha, and Gelato. Lastly, Jolie introduced us to the Co-Op’s Community Discount Program for those of
limited means. Thanks, Jolie and Christina! You were Amazing !!
ANOTHER DELIGHTFUL VISITOR FROM OUR PAST! We were absolutely thrilled when former ACE-T I Core Instructor Venus stopped by to visit us! We
were very sad when she relocated to the East Coast a few years ago, but she has now moved back to
the Sacramento area, and we truly couldn’t be any happier. She is such a kind, caring person and she was greatly missed by all of us who came to know her during her tenure here. Cathie had tears when
her soul friend hugged her. Please don’t be a stranger, Venus. Come see us again soon!

HE WINS AGAIN! Tyler was the first “Smarty Pants” to guess Stephanie’s new Stumper
quiz question. The question she asked: “What is
our ACE-IT I mascot?” The answer? The Science Robot! Our mascot is currently standing
on a nice display shelf installed by Rick in the main assembly room.
BOOKS, BOOKS, AND MORE BOOKS! We got together a bag of old books that we no longer needed and went to check out a couple of the Little Free Libraries in our area. First, we stopped at one that we’ve visited in the past and
traded for some interesting new titles. Then, we went to see a brand new location that just opened recently. This adorable little book nook is located in front of the Spiritual Life Center
just across from Sam’s Club on Butano Way. S.L.C. is a very welcoming Interfaith Unity Ministry, and our old friend and teacher Cindy Lu had been a long time member of the congregation while she was still with us. When Louise from the front office noticed us
outside, she eagerly came out to greet us and said that they had even more books inside the building that we would be welcome to look through. We had a delightful time combing
through the array of fascinating titles and trading in our old books for some exciting new reading materials. We’ll be back again soon!
REFRESHING RIVER WALK All the rain we’ve been getting has been great for easing our drought conditions, but we’ve also been suffering from some “Cabin Fever”, and we were excited to get outdoors for some
soothing exercise on a beautiful, dry sunny day. We went down to the river access trail just off of La
Riviera Drive and found several people walking dogs, including an adorable
pooch name Roxy the Rottweiler, who was especially friendly and wanted everyone to pet her. Also along the
trail, we saw some busy little squirrels, a couple of snowy white egrets, a lot of happily twittering songbirds, and a nesting pair of hawks. All in all, a very relaxing morning!

this month. He loves to draw and seems like a very
outgoing and interesting guy. We look forward to
learning more about him.
Welcome, Arturo!
MIRA LOMA SHOW We attended the Mira Loma High School 1-B Art Show at the Sacramento Fine Arts Center. This exhibit featured paintings, photographs, and sculptures submitted by the students, and they are a creative, imaginative
bunch! We noticed an interesting overall theme depicting dreams,
emotions, and psychology
RECIPE RESEARCH We headed over to the nearby Arden-Dimick Library to
explore new, interesting recipes for our Wednesday cooking classes to try out. We got to work and found a treasure trove of books and cooking magazines full of
mouth-watering ideas. Everyone enjoyed flipping through pages and picking out their favorites to try out
at program. Some of the delicious-looking dishes that we saved for later use included Greek Avgolemono Soup,
Tuscan Shrimp and Beans, Gorgozola and Pear Risotto, Tortilla Espanola, and Golden Mashed Potatoes with
Leeks & Sour Cream. Now, let’s get cooking!

FABULOUS FLYING FUN We found some colorful kites at the dollar store, got them assembled, and took them out to
Howe Park for some aerial acrobatics. There was a bit of an encouraging breeze when we first headed to the park, but unfortunately, it mostly petered out by the time we got there. With some determination and persistence, we still managed to get our kites aloft for a while and everyone had a fun time out in the lovely March weather. We’re going to keep the kites at the ready and
head out again soon on a windier day. Stay Tuned!
INDEPENDENT LIVING SKILLS: LAUNDRY FOLDING
Ahhh! Yes...wouldn’t it be fun to live in a Disney Fantasy World where all you have to do is whistle a happy tune and you’re suddenly
surrounded by helpful woodland creatures eager to do all of your household chores for you? Alas, we live (mostly) in the real world, and the laundry isn’t going to fold itself! We don’t mind, though, because it
is good practice for independent living and everybody likes having clean, folded laundry!

ACE-IT I COOKING ACADEMY “Independence With a Spicy Twist!”
VOCABULARY WORD: SYNESTHESIA A perceptual condition in which different senses
are “joined” or “crossed”. People with synesthesia can taste sounds, smell colors, or see scents, and research proves that these people (up to 4% of the
population) experience reality differently.
CREATIVE CAJUN CUISINE We tapped into the spirit of the bayou and put together a mouth-
watering Jambalaya. First, we chopped up and sautéed some celery, onions, four colors of bell peppers, jalapeno, and garlic. Then we added sliced Andouille Sausage and skinless chicken
breasts. Next, in went the stock, tomatoes, rice, Cajun seasoning, bay leaf, thyme, and cayenne pepper. When the rice was almost
tender, we tossed in the okra and fresh shrimp, letting the mixture continue to simmer until the shrimp were nice and pink.
It was a little on the spicy side for some of us, but full of rich flavor and deliciousness! Laissez les bons temps rouler!*

LOOK OUT FOR LEPRECHAUNS! There was green in abundance and blarney in the air at our St. Patrick’s Day Party! Nobody found a magical pot of gold, but we all had fun & tried not to overindulge too
much in the temptingly festive holiday treats.
TEST YOUR IRISH KNOWLEDGE: What is the difference between a traditional Shamrock and a Four-Leafed Clover?
The shamrock is a type of clover found abundantly in Ireland. The most well-known meanings were imparted to the shamrock by St. Patrick of the early Irish Catholic Church, who compared the plant’s tri-part
leaves to the Holy Trinity: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. For this reason, the three-leafed clover has since become known as a symbol of St. Patrick and Ireland. Occasionally, these clovers are found with four leaves. These are extremely rare (possibly only one in an entire clover field) and are considered to be
very lucky for the finder!
