Curve and Gradient Diagrams July 1999About This DocumentThis
manual supersedes the Curve and Gradient Diagrams book dated March
1979 and any subsequentamendments. The data represented in this
manual is a summary of RAC infrastructure and is to be used as a
guide only. It is asnapshot of the system as it was recorded in
Primary Source databases as of January 1999. The data provided
inthis manual has generally been assembled automatically from these
Primary Sources. The Primary Source of any datamust be referred to
in all cases where accuracy is critical.

10IntroductionData SourcesThe Primary Data Sources for the updated
pages are the Survey Alignment Database for Curvature, and the 1994
Freight RailGPS Rapid Rail Mapping project for Grades. Various
other databases (as detailed in Table 1) provide the Primary
DataSources for Locations, Bridges and Tunnels, Level Crossings,
Speedboards, Turnouts, and Signals. The data is generally current as
of January 1999 (GPS Mapping project took place during 1994), and
was extracted fromdatabases as they were at this time. The updated
pages were assembled automatically from the Primary Data. Any
errors oromissions in the updated pages can be attributed to errors
or omissions in the Primary Data. The availability of the Primary
Data Sources for Curvature and Gradient (Survey Alignment Database
and GPS Mapping) havedetermined which track sections have been
updated in this edition of the Curve and Gradient Diagrams. The
updated pages aresummarised in Map 1.For these updated areas,
Secondary Data Sources (such as the old Curve and Gradient book)
have only be used to fill in anygaps in the Primary Data. These are
summarised in Map 2 and Map 3.Many tracks included in the old Curve
and Gradient book do not have Primary Data available for the
following reasons: The line is now closed. The line is a "Pioneer
Line" and the design data has never been input into databases. The
line was managed by CityRail in 1994, and therefore not included in
the Freight Rail mapping project. The line is of very short length,
and the design data has never been input into databases. These track
sections have not been updated, but have been republished as they
currently appear, (including those lines thatare now closed). In
multiple track areas, only one track (the Key Track) has been shown
to represent the corridor, (usually the Down track),unless the Up
and Down tracks differ significantly (i.e. Bethungra Spiral), in
which case a separate chart has been provided forthe Up track in
the area.

Name Includes Corridor Code and Name. On pages containing copies of
the old Curve and Gradient Book, theCorridor Name may appear again
within the Page.Page Numbering Pages are numbered in order of
Corridor Code then Page. Corridors made up of both updated pages
andpages from the old Curve and Gradient Book, will have the old
pages numbered with an a suffix to theCorridor Code, and the
numbering will restart. On pages containing copies of the old Curve
and GradientBook, the original page number may appear within the
Page.Kilometrage Kilometrage is shown every kilometre, with 20
kilometres per page. A vertical dashed line aligns thekilometrage
for objects appearing on both the Curve Line and the Grade
Line.Grade Line The Grade Line shows the relative altitude at an
exaggerated vertical scale The vertical scale is consistenton all
updated pages. Pages with very large differences in altitude over
the 20 kilometre section will have anobvious step in the Grade Line
to fit the section on one page.Grade Grade is shown as a 1 in
number. In areas of relatively steep grades and tight curves, the
equivalentcompensated grade (according to C2200) is shown and
marked with an asterisk (*). A positive grade isup hill in the Down
direction, and a negative grade is down hill in the Down direction.
The location of theIntersection Point (the thin vertical line
separating different grades) is approximated from a straight
linefitting routine. The newly calculated grade does not
necessarily match the grades shown in the old Curveand Gradient
Book or in longitudinal section plans. This is generally due to the
adoption of differentIntersection Point locations but the grade
between Intersection Points is accurate. Any critical
tasksrequiring grade information at, or near the ruling grade for a
section should refer to longitudinal sectionplans for the
area.Curve Line Curves are represented as inverse radius about the
centre line. This means that straight track appears onthe
centreline. Very large radius curves deviate only slightly from the
centreline. Tight curves deviate greatlyfrom the centreline.
Compound curves are stepped. Transitions appear as sloping lines.
The sharper thetransition, the steeper the slope. Some curves do
not have designed in transitions and appear as verticalsteps.
Curves shown above the centreline are right hand aspect. Curves
shown below the line are left handaspect.
Curve and Gradient Diagrams Manual TS 0002 TIVersion 2 July
1999 Rail Access Corporation Introduction - Page 8 of 10Radius The
radius is shown rounded to the nearest 10 metres. In complex
compound curves, only the tightestradius is generally shown. Very
large radius curves (greater than 2000m) do not have the radius
shown.Locations Locations are shown along the Grade Line and are
given their kilometrage on the corridor. The name, spelling and
kilometrage are obtained from the RAC Location Codes
Manual.Overbridges Overbridges appear as a step above the Grade
Line. The length of the step is the length of the Overbridge. The
height of the step is fixed. Where the database has a name for the
Bridge, this is given.Underbridges Underbridges appear as a step
below the Grade Line. The length of the step is the length of
theUnderbridge. The height of the step is fixed. Where the database
has a name for the Bridge, this is given.Tunnels Tunnels appear as
a step above the Grade Line. The length of the step is the length
of the Tunnel. Theheight of the step is fixed. Where the database
has a name for the Tunnel, this is given.Speedboards Down
Speedboards appear as a shaped symbol above the Curve Line. Up
Speedboards appear asa shaped symbol below the Curve Line.
Speedboards applying to Normal type trains appear as blacknumerals
on a white background. Speedboards applying to XPT type trains
appear as white numerals ona black background. The kilometrage of
the Speedboard is the location of the small leg at the bottom ofthe
symbol.Level Crossings Level Crossings appear as a small x symbol
above the Grade Line. Where the database has a name for aPublic
Level Crossing, this is given.Turnouts Turnouts appear as a small
symbol below the Grade Line. These are provided as a guide only.
Thesewere obtained from the GPS Rapid Rail Mapping survey of the
state, are approximate in location, and notnecessarily
complete.Signals Signals appear as a small symbol below the Grade
Line. These are provided as a guide only. Thesewere obtained from
the GPS Rapid Rail Mapping survey of the state, are approximate in
location, and notnecessarily complete.
