As Outcome of Workshop
on
“Curriculum Development in Textiles”
held during 13-14, July 2015
at
Uttar Pradesh Textile Technology Institute
(Formerly known as GCTI),
11/208, Souterganj, Kanpur
A Two-days workshop was organized at U.P.T.T.I. Kanpur for curriculum development
of B.Tech / M.Tech in textiles and B.Tech. in Carpet & Textile Technology on 13-14 July 2015.
The inaugural session was held at the Placement cell of the Institute. The program commenced
with the lightening of the lamp by the Chief guest Dr. M. P. Agrawal, CMD & Chairman of Sri
Lakshmi Cotsyn Ltd. Kanpur, Guest of Honour Prof. B.K. Behera, Head, Department of Textile
Technology, I.I.T. Delhi, Dr. D.B.Shakyawar, Director and Dr. Alok Kumar, Dean Academics,
U.P.T.T.I. Kanpur. This was followed by Saraswati Vandana offered by the students of the
Institute. The inaugural function was started with welcome address by Dr. Shakyawar. He
briefed about the objectives of the workshop and recently initiated activities in the institute such
as modernization of textile testing lab, Nonwoven manufacturing facility, virtual classroom, wi-fi
network in the campus, and new boy‟s & girl‟s hostel. He has also informed about the proposed
establishment of Innovation and Incubation Center at the institute with financial support of
UPTU. Dr. Alok Kumar read the brief bio-data of the Guest of Honour Prof. Behera. Key note
address was delivered by Prof. Behera who spoke about elements of Curriculum development
and the basic outline that must be followed. He emphasized on the point that now a days
engineers got placed in the service sector. So, we have to focus on the development of analytical
skill and personality apart from subject knowledge. The modern techniques should be included in
the curriculum, keeping in mind the worldwide development in the field of textiles and the
intelligence level of the students. Later on Mr. Mahendra Uttam read the brief bio-data of Chief
Guest. Dr. Agrawal, Chief Guest of function emphasized about the role of industry in academics
and the intermingling of the two for the better future prospects of the textile graduates. He
further added that the curriculum should include marketing and merchandising subjects with
special orientation to textiles. The vote of thanks was proposed by Dr. Prashant of the Institute.
The guests attended high tea cum networking at the end.
On the eve of workshop, Principal Secretary of Technical Education U.P. Smt. Monika S Garg,
IAS suggested to introduce following courses / content in the syllabus of B Tech courses: (a)
Entrepreneur Development, (b) Personality development (Communication skill), (c) Application
of Computer Aided Design for weaving and printing. She congratulated for grand success of
workshop.
Session-I
The session was organized for the curriculum development of M. Tech. and was chaired by Prof.
B. K. Behera. M Tech syllabus is very old and has not been revised for many years. The experts
recommended overall change in the structure of M Tech syllabus. Following recommendation
have been made by experts:
1. The credit based curriculum for M. Tech (TT/TC) having 54 credits was proposed and
accepted by the house.
2. The whole curriculum is divided into four semesters with nearly equal credits. First three
semesters will have the theory paper along with project-I in third semester and fourth
semester is exclusive for the project-II.
3. In each semester, the subjects are divided into two groups- Core subjects (Departmental
and Interdepartmental) and Elective subjects.
4. Following new subjects have been suggested to be incorporated in M Tech syllabus:
Core subjects: Research methodology and Technical Textiles
5. Keeping in mind, the current needs of the research and industry, new subjects have been
introduced in the curriculum as:
a) Characterization of Fibres and Polymers,
b) Cost and Financial Management,
c) Textile Reinforced Composites,
d) Apparel Production and Management,
e) Clothing Science,
f) Advanced Textile Materials,
g) Process Control in Spinning and Weaving,
h) Computational Methods,
i) Mechanics of Textile Machinery and
j) Environment and Ecological Management.
Session II and III
Post lunch two parallel sessions were organized for the curriculum development of Textile
Technology and Textile Engineering chaired by Prof. G. S. Bhargava, Ex-Principal of UPTTI,
co-chaired by Prof. B. K. Behera, IIT Delhi and Ms Sujata Rajan Seth, an Industrialist. Prof. M.
Uttam and Dr. J. P. Singh co-ordinated the session on Textile Technology Syllabus and Dr Atal
Vijay Agrawal & Dr Prasant co-ordinated for Textile Engineering. The suggestions of Shri K K
Agarwal, Chairman and CMD of Alps Industries Ltd and Mr S P Oswal, Vardhman Group are
also incorporated.
The recommendations made by the experts to make curriculum more useful to students, industry
and researchers are listed as:
1. Yarn Manufacturing and Fabric Manufacturing to be restructured and divided into three
parts instead of existing four.
2. The vacant slots in the curriculum may be filled by Technical Textile I&II, as electives.
3. Emerging areas in textile field to be taught to the students by introducing following new
subjects:
a) Advanced Textile Materials (Nano-textiles, Bio-materials and smart materials
b) Industrial Engineering and operation research
c) Functional clothing (Space suites, protective clothing etc.)
d) Specialty yarns and fabrics
e) Costing and management,
Session IV
Next day in the morning, two parallel sessions were organized for the curriculum development of
Textile Chemistry. Dr. Abha Bhargava and Mr. S.K. Rajput have coordinated the session. Dr.
D.B.Shakyawar, Eminent Scientist and Director UPTTI, Kanpur, Dr. Atal Vijay Agrawal, Dean,
NITRA, Dr. K. K. Goswami, Director, IICT, Bhadohi, Dr. Ajay Kr. Saxena, Director, PSIT,
Kanpur, Dr. Anurag Srivastava, Scientist G and Group Director, DMSRDE, Kanpur, Dr. Mukesh
Sinha, Scientist, DMSRDE, Kanpur, and Dr. S. K. Paul, I.I.C.T. Bhadohi have participated in
the discussion.
The recommendations made by renowned experts in B.Tech. (Textile Chemistry) course are as
follows-
Major recommendations
Three new subjects are added in the curriculum as: (a) Advanced textile Materials, (b)Technical
textile and (c) Clothing science
„Development in wet processing‟ subject is deleted and contents of this subject is added in its
relevant subject like –dyeing, printing, finishing, pretreatments etc. further advancements in wet
processing is also added in relevant subjects.
Minor recommendations
i. Subject „Textile Auxiliaries‟ is renamed as „Textile Chemical Analysis‟ with its revised
contents.
ii. Subject „Technology of printing-I & II‟ is renamed as „Process and technology of
printing-I & II‟.
iii. Flow charts of various fabric processing- a new content, is added in bleaching, dyeing,
finishing etc.
iv. Content of „Industrial Chemistry‟ has been upgraded.
v. Various national and international testing standards like BS, BIS, ASTM, AATCC etc.
are added in „Textile Testing‟.
vi. Thermo-chromic and Photo chromic dyes and Dyeing of high performance fibers are
added in „Process and Technology of Dyeing‟.
vii. 3D printing and digital printing are added in „ Process and Technology of Printing ‟.
viii. Detailed CCM theory, color physics & color measurement are added in „Physical
Chemistry of Dyeing‟.
ix. Evaluation of various textile chemical auxiliaries is added in „Textile Chemical Analysis‟
x. Lists of text books and reference books are enhanced.
Session V
This session was co-ordinated by Mrs. Alka Ali and Dr. M.K.Singh-I under the chairmanship of
Dr. Anurag Srivastava, Scientist G, Group director, DMSRDE. Prof. C.B. Gupta, Dr. Mukesh
Sinha, Dr. Abha Bhargava and Prof G.S. Bhargava were present during discussion. The Present
need of man made fibre technology in India and abroad was discussed thoroughly. On the basis
of discussion and recommendation of the industry experts Sri R.K. Sharma, Sri D.S. Khare,
following modification have been made:
1. Technical Textiles (I&II) are introduced in Semester VII and VIII respectively
2. Textile Management / Textile Marketing and Merchandizing is introduced in Semester
VIII.
3. Garment Manufacturing Technology (GMT) is introduced in semester VI
4. Special Textile Structures is introduced in semester VIII
5. “Advances in characterization techniques” is introduced in Textile Testing and all other
technology related subjects
Detailed contents are modified as per academic, industrial, research and development
requirements in order to shape the employment need of the students.
Session VI
Post lunch a session was conducted for the curriculum development of Carpet & textile
technology under the Chairmanship of Prof. Chattopadhyay. Dr. K K Goswami Director IICT,
Bhadohi and Dr D B Shakyawar, Director UPTTI, Kanpur were
the experts. Dr. Sanat Kumar Pal , Professor, IICT-Bhadohi gave a presentation of the four year
B.Tech. degree syllabus approved in the BOS of UPTU, Lucknow.
Following suggestions are desired for incorporation in the syllabus.
1. Special course on process control in spinning & weaving.
2. Common textile syllabus for UPTTI, Kanpur and IICT, Bhadohi
3. Introduction of Lustre and walking comfort assessment for carpet in the
syllabus.
4. Sharing of expertise by UPTTI, Kanpur & IICT Bhadohi - two major textile colleges
in UP for guest lectures, assessment of theoretical and practical exams.
The scheme of study introduced in 2013-14 from Ist year B.Tech. has been implemented
upto 3rd year. Hence attempt could be made to incorporate the above suggestions in
Final year scheme subject to approval from UPTU, Lucknow.
Session VII
In the Valedictory session, Prof. Mahendra Uttam, Dr. Abha Bhargava, Prof. Alka Ali, Prof. G.S.
Bhargava, Prof. C.B. Gupta, and Dr. Mukesh Sinha, Scientist, DMSRDE Kanpur summarized
sessions of the workshop and expressed their satisfaction on the outcome of the workshop.
Certificates were also distributed by Prof. G.S. Bhargava to the participants. The workshop was a
huge success and attended by the various faculty members and people from industry. In the
direction of Dr. D.B. Sakyawar, Dr. Alok Kumar and the committee members, Dr. Jitendra
Pratap Singh, Shri Shivgovind Prasad, Shri A.K.S.Gangwar and Dr. Neelu Kambo extended their
best to make the program a great success. The contribution of all the faculty members in the
success of the workshop is outstanding especially Prof. V.K. Malhotra, Dr. Prashant, Dr. Mukesh
Kumar Singh-I and Shri Sanjeev Rajput.
