This Boise City teen and an FFA member was part of thegroup hosting an animal petting zoo for Boise City el-ementary students. Young men and women with the 4-Hand FFA programs , showed off their animals at the newAg Farm west of the city.

The sunroom of the Cimarron Memorial Hospital is be-ing transformed into a physical therapy room. The roomis being furnished with purchased and donated equipment.

There have been lately, frus-trations about the lack of cov-erage on certain Boise CitySchool functions. I can appre-ciate all of that; however, whenit comes to much of the text andseveral of the pictures, TheBoise City News is for the mostpart, a one man operation.

Even though the paper iscalled The Boise City News, weendeavor to cover the entiretyof Cimarron County, southwest-ern Colorado, the west side ofTexas County, west to nearlyClayton, N.M. and south toKerrick, Texas. I can’t be ev-erywhere.

In the fall we have one foot-ball team in the county, and Ihave no problem attending mostof the home games.

By basketball season, thereare at least four schools repre-sented with middle and highschool teams; this means thatthere could be 16 or moregames a week. I choose to de-pend on parents and yearbookstaffs for basketball pictures.When I get them I run them.

When track and cross coun-try comes around I again dependon parents who have been fol-lowing the teams all over thestate. I couldn’t do it withoutthem.

This weekend will be thestock show; for the first timesince 2002, I won’t be there.Each year in the past my atten-dance at the stock show hasended with my being really sickwith lung congestion. I’m notgoing to do it anymore. I havetried to make arrangements forphotographs. I’ll also need text;any help anyone can give me willbe appreciated.

We are proud of what ourkids accomplish, be they fromFelt, Campo, Boise City, Keyesor Yarbrough, and we are thrilledwhen we can toot their horns.Please help us do that.

Shows” he likes, and amongthose he hates are “Survivor”(greedy schoolyard bullies),and the “Biggest Loser”(Degradation of the obese).

However, he knew he wascarrying around a whole otherperson that wasn’t there inhigh school. He becameaware that he was nowheavier than the largestfootball player on the team hissenior year.

And though heart problemsand diabetes weren’t yet aproblem, he knew any morninghe could wake with thoseproblems…or perhaps notwake at all.

It was time for achange…he had things to livefor, people to love, a future toexplore.

All he knew was he didn’twant some buff blondmillionaire screaming in hisface about letting himselfdown. There had to be anotherway.

When Cimarron Memorialadvertised about a weight lossprogram, he began to considerit, knowing in the back of his

mind it wouldn’t be easy. Hewas a man of compulsions;there were things he loved toeat, and others he was sure hehad to eat.

The Cimarron Memorialprogram, (which now hasdouble digit participants), wasexplained to him as not aprogram of rewards andpunishment, but as a casual,eventual lifestyle change. Itwasn’t about refusing to eatany of the things he liked, butlearning to do it in moderateportions.

Then online he found a sitecalled “Sparkspeople”, wherehe could set up a program thathelped him journal his diet. Helearned he had to eat a LOTto maintain his goal levels. Hewas feeling well fed, and sawit was going to be better forhim. And there would be noscreaming buff blond,millionaire with her own TVshow, Wii personality andexercise CDs. Life was good!

He began to think he coulddo it. Who knows what theyear might bring? Might heeventually even leave thatother person behind, never tobe seen again?

This past November I at-tended my last honor choir fes-tival in Weatherford, OK. I havebeen a member of WesternOklahoma Choral DirectorsAssociation (WOCDA) for fouryears.

This honor choir consists ofvocal musician students fromwestern Oklahoma who haveauditioned and received highrating in which to be recognizedas an honor choir member. Af-ter auditioning in Seiling, OK in

October and receiving honors, Iattended a festival of choirsalong with fellow vocal musi-cians, Kelsey Turner and IanLicea.

We spent all morning and af-ternoon learning new pieces forthe evening festival. A few songsslowed as down such as theWomen’s Choir song in Portu-guese and the Mixed Choir piecein Bulgarian. That same eveningwe performed in the festival ofchoirs at Southwestern Okla-homa State University and re-ceived honors. WOCDA hasbeen a wonderful experiencefor me and a great opportunityfor all young vocalists to get to-gether and learn from eachother as well as have fun withthe people you meet.

I would like to thank theWestern Oklahoma Choral Di-rectors Association for the won-derful experiences I have hadover the few years I have beeninvolved. I would also like tothank Boise City High School forallowing us the privilege to at-tend these auditions and events.The skills and friendships I havedeveloped with WOCDA willlast a lifetime.
