HASKELL SETS DERBYCOMPASS AS EAST
MEETS WEST
by Chris McGrath
Guys. Come on. What was the one thing we were told, right
from the outset? Wash your hands. Obsessively, wash your
hands. Yet here's our most accomplished trainer, explaining that
his assistant transferred a trace from a medicinal patch on his
own back to the tongue-ties of their two most charismatic
sophomores.
Somebody seems to have been no more vigilant in the jocks'
room at Los Alamitos, creating a fresh headache for Bob Baffert
in the postponement of a barn debut, scheduled for Del Mar this
weekend, for Maximum Security (New Year's Day). This year
Baffert has endured setbacks proportionate to his success,
which is saying plenty, and it's unfortunate that the mainstream
media has taken the opportunity to conflate those twin menaces
to the reputation of our sport, injuries and drugs.
The more responsible coverage has at least kept in perspective
the relatively innocuous contamination of Charlatan
(Speightstown) and Gamine (Into Mischief). But some have been
unable to resist the narrative combining this episode with the
peculiar treatment of Justify (Scat Daddy), after his positive test
on the way to a Triple Crown; the welfare traumas, last year, of
Baffert's otherwise paradisal home track, Santa Anita; and the
federal indictments this spring against trainers Jason Servis and
Jorge Navarro, among others. Cont. p3
LIGHTLY RACED RUNNERS LOOM LARGE IN
CCA OAKS While two-time GSW Tonalist=s Shape (Tonalist) is favored at
9-5 on the morning line for Saturday=s GI Coaching Club
American Oaks at Saratoga, she=ll have to fend off several well-
bred and promising up-and-comers if she=s to get the job done.
Perhaps the most formidable challenger is WinStar
Stablemates Racing=s Paris Lights (Curlin). The Bill Mott trainee
was third in a sloppy-track sprint at Gulfstream on debut
Apr. 26, but took a big step forward to romp on the stretch-out
at Churchill May 31 and then paired up 85 Beyer Speed Figures
when taking a first-level allowance June 27 in similarly facile
fashion. That 85 Beyer is the field=s best last-out number and is
only eclipsed by an 89 and 87 earned by Tonalist=s shape several
starts back. Mott, who won this race in 1997 with Ajina, will also
saddle Godolphin=s versatile GII Fair Grounds Oaks and
GIII Wonder Again S. third Antoinette (Hard Spun). Cont. p6

It was Servis, of course, who supervised the career of
Maximum Security until that scandal broke--in a fashion that
always seemed unorthodox, even before the lurid doubts
introduced by his arrest. How long ago it seems, now, since that
sultry evening when, after a prolonged delay for the heat wave,
Maximum Security denied Baffert's Mucho Gusto (Mucho
Macho Man) in the GI TVG.com Haskell. One way or another it
has been a wild ride all the way through, for this horse, and this
Del Mar fiasco will barely warrant a footnote in his biography.
Much like Maximum Security, I'm sure all of us must be sharing
the same yearning: for what we now know to value as that most
extraordinary of privileges, a regular day at the races. As it is,
Mike Smith has been locked out of Saratoga (know the feeling,
brother) by taking the mount on Authentic (Into Mischief) in a
still more surreal Haskell--a AWin and You=re In@ event for the
GI Breeders= Cup Classic--this time round.
Smith will be hoping that the horse makes that a price worth
paying, albeit the most obvious value of this race--in pitching
together the respective runners-up from the GI Runhappy Santa
Anita Derby and GI Belmont S. (presented by NYRA Bets)--is to
integrate the form of the crop's standout colt on either coast.
In his own right, Authentic (what a name for a "Sham" winner!)
is certainly at something of a crossroads. Cont. p4

This Side Up cont.
The way he goes about his task should settle the questions left
open by his first defeat, where he broke a step slow; was kept
fairly wide; and for the first time, never made the lead at any
call. In view of his idle month, at
the height of the lockdown,
Authentic could yet prove that he
wasn't simply revealing the kind of
low fuel reserves we've seen in
other brilliantly fast sons of his
sire. Don't forget how green he
looked in his first races, almost
colliding with the rail even as he
cruised clear on his stakes debut.
He remains perfectly entitled to
turn one small step back into two
big steps forward.
Many of us, of course, are hoping
that the single most pertinent
factor in his defeat will simply turn
out to have been the presence, in
Honor A.P. (Honor Code), of the classiest colt of the crop. For
now, Authentic's connections appear to be keeping the faith.
That looks significant, as the Derby trail extends so much deeper
into the calendar this year that his perseverance is already
costing key opportunities round a single turn. (He's hardly going
to be bounced out for the GI Allen Jerkens now.) With his future
at Spendthrift in mind, however, maybe the idea is just to get his
Grade I nailed in the Haskell,
and then see how his world
looks after that.
If this field lacks depth, it
does set up a potential pincer
movement on the favorite:
the seasoned Ny Traffic (Cross
Traffic) can be counted on to
press pretty unsparingly,
having seen off all bar the
stellar Maxfield (Street Sense)
last time, while progressive Dr
Post (Quality Road) will punish
any reckless competition up
front by drawing on his
stamina.
After all, one thing that
won't change in a September Derby is the perennial equilibrium
challenge between the speed horses and the closers. Will that
be tilted one way or another, by more mature horses? Cont. p5

You could argue that the speed will hold up better, driven by
stronger horses. On the other hand, it could be that the speed in
May tends to be a function of a more general precocity. Perhaps
a 20-runner stampede through 10 furlongs will this time favor
the traditional Belmont type. So Dr Post could yet enter the
equation, even if he can't quite run down Authentic this time.
So, too, could Mystic Guide (Ghostzapper). Some people sound
ready to give up on this guy after he could only manage third in
the GIII Peter Pan S. Thursday, but only a very talented horse
would have made that kind of dynamic move from where he
was mid-race. Runner-up Caracaro (Uncle Mo), who was making
his first start in six months and only his third overall, would also
merit a rematch with Country Grammer (Tonalist) in the
GI Runhappy Travers S. But then, if Country Grammer has really
hit the Classic seam in what is a copper-bottomed Classic
pedigree, nobody should presume the limits of his own progress.
Still plenty of delicious uncertainty, then, for all that we appear
to have a standard-bearer on either coast. Just the last two
weekends, after all, have volunteered legitimate new forces in
Art Collector (Bernardini) and Uncle Chuck (Uncle Mo). Now
we'll finally get the two coasts together, and find out whether
one can maintain social distance from the other through the
Monmouth stretch. If not, let's just hope that everyone has
remembered to wash their hands.
Ed DeRosa of Brisnet.com takes on TDN=s Steve Sherack and
Brian DiDonato as they handicap Triple Crown prep races plus
the big three races themselves. The three will make $100
Win/Place bets in the preps and $200 in/Place bets in the
Belmont, Kentucky Derby and Preakness. Highest bankroll at the
end wins.
DeRosa - Peter Pan Result - Country Grammer got the money in
game fashion. Bankroll: $4960.
GI Haskell S. - Going to take a chance here with Jesus= Team,
who is right in the mix with all other contenders based on most
recent form and maybe can find improvement going 1 1/8 miles
first time. I love what his sire Tapiture has done from limited
opportunities and at the price point, and maybe Jesus= Team can
be that sire=s breakout horse. Authentic took a step back last out
and Dr. Post likely underlaid as the obvious alternative to
favorite. Selection: #3 Jesus= Team (15-1).
Sherack - Peter Pan Result - Mystic Guide could do no better
than third as the chalk. Bankroll: $3135.
GI Haskell S. - I really need a bomb to get back in this thing, but
this isn=t the race for it. Even with all the speed signed on,
Authentic should still be awfully tough to beat for Mr. Haskell,
Bob Baffert. Selection: #2 Authentic (4-5).
DiDonato - Peter Pan Result - Country Grammer (+$750)
needed a busy ride, but he saved all the ground and fought on
nicely to get the job done. Bankroll: $5125.
GI Haskell S. - I=ve been high on Dr Post for a while, and picked
him in the Belmont. He took another step forward that day to be
second, and catches an easier group this time while likely to get
a huge pace set-up. There=s tons of other speed signed on here,
which figures to compromise favorite Authentic=s chances as
much as it=s going to help Dr Post. Barring some scratches, bad
breaks or odd tactics, Dr Post will win this race. Selection: #1 Dr
Post (5-2).

Crystal Ball (Malibu Moon) also carries the WinStar
Stablemates silks and was third in her debut, going a mile at
Santa Anita May 17 for Bob Baffert. The $750,000 Fasig-Tipton
Gulfrstream grad aired by 6 1/4 lengths on the stretch-out June
14. Baffert took the 2017 CCA Oaks by a head over Mott-trained
Elate (Medaglia d=Oro).
The Chad Brown stable took the GIII Peter Pan S. for
sophomore boys with Country Grammer (Tonalist) on opening
day, and could double up with Altaf (Medaglia d=Oro) here. The
Shadwell homebred was just seventh in her grassy unveiling in
Florida Apr. 2, but uncorked a visually impressive sweeping rally
to don cap and gown by 6 1/2 lengths under the Twin Spires
May 23.
PLENTY OF WAYS TO GO IN UN A mostly well-matched group of nine turfers line up in
Saturday=s GI United Nations S. at Monmouth Park. With a
somewhat surprising lack of even one Chad Brown trainee
signed on, conditioner Mike Maker owns the lone chance to
complete an exacta. The 2017 UN winner sends out reformed
claimers Aquaphobia (Giant=s Causeway) and Muggsamatic
(Any Given Saturday). The former was scooped up for $62,500
in January and promptly took a Gulfstream starter stake over
Muggsamatic--then trained by Jason Servis--in February. He was
fourth in the GIII Mervin Muniz Memorial H. at Fair Grounds in
March, second with a solid 101 Beyer Speed Figure in
Gulfstream=s May 9 Sunshine Forever S. and fourth again in

Churchill=s GII Wise Dan S. June 20. He hasn=t gone quite as far
as this 1 3/8-mile distance in quite some time, but has good back
form at longer trips and a trainer whose prowess at finding
prospects who want to run all day on the turf is unparalleled.
Muggsamatic, claimed for $25,000 out of a local victory last
August, was transferred to Maker after Servis=s indictment as
part of an alleged doping scheme. He picked up right where he
left off for the new barn, going last to first in Gulfstream=s
Soldier=s Dancer S. June 6. The farthest he=s ever gonepreviously
was nine panels, resulting in a dominant win for $22,000 here
almost a year ago.
Arklow (Arch) is the lone Grade I winner in the field, having
gotten up late against a salty group in Belmont=s Joe Hirsch Turf
Classic S. Oct. 5. He was eighth in the GI Longines Breeders= Cup
Turf in November, and fifth behind another savvy Mike Maker
claim in Zulu Alpha (Street Cry {Ire}) in the lucrative GI Pegasus
World Cup Invitational Turf S. Jan. 25. Second by a neck in the
June 13 GIII Louisville S. under the Twin Spires, he wheels back
in six days off a sixth-place run--again behind Zulu Alpha--in
Keeneland=s GII Elkhorn S.
Paret (Aus) (Harbour Watch {Ire}) figures to show the way
early and may very well be as loose as he wants to be. The
Australian import was stakes-placed four times last term--at
distances from 5 1/2 furlongs to 1 1/2 miles--and resurfaced at
Belmont June 4 to steal the Tiller S. at this distance as a 38-1
shot. Current (Curlin) was fifth, Standard Deviation (Curlin) sixth
and Corelli (Point of Entry) seventh that day.
>INVADER= LOOKS IMPOSING IN HALL OF
FAME
Four-for-six Decorated Invader (Declaration of War) appears
awful tough to beat in Saturday=s GII National Museum of Racing
Hall of Fame S. at Saratoga. Second to subsequent MGSW Field
Pass (Lemon Drop Kid) on local debut here a year ago, he broke
through convincingly next out before notching a big win in
Woodbine=s GI Summer S. in September. He could only manage
fourth in the GI Breeders= Cup Juvenile Turf after a tough trip
that had many arguing that he might=ve been best, and he=s lent
support to that claim so far this season. He flew home from far
back to annex Gulfstream=s Cutler Bay S. Mar. 28, and made
short work of five rivals in the GII Pennine Ridge S. at Belmont
June 20. The biggest question for Decorated Invader appears to
be how he=ll handle nine furlongs--all his prior efforts have come
over at least a sixteenth shorter.
"The challenge is when you have a horse that's a standout in a
short field, there's going to be a target on his back," said Terry
Finley of co-owner West Point Thoroughbreds. "The break and
the first eighth of a mile will be important. Ultimately, it will be
up to [jockey] Joel [Rosario]. He really fits the horse. When they
walk out of the paddock, you just have so much confidence and
no concerns that you'll get a top class ride from him. It's very
good to have the option to be a closer, but we have seen time
and time again where you have the best horse in the race, and
they [the pacesetters] don't come back."
Decorated Invader isn=t the only Christophe Clement-trained
son of Declaration of War entered in the Hall of Fame--he=ll also
send out Gufo, who has won his last four starts, including
Delaware=s GIII Kent S. over this distance two weeks ago.
Hall of Famer Bill Mott owns a record seven victories in this
race--including in 2019--and will be represented by June 20
Churchill allowance winner Moon Over Miami (Malibu Moon).

DEL MAR ADDS JULY 27 CARD Following the cancellation of three cards this weekend due to
a lack of jockeys caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, Del Mar
rescheduled one of those lost days for Monday, July 27.
AWe=re looking forward to resuming racing on Friday, July 24,@
said Del Mar Thoroughbred Club executive vice president for
racing Tom Robbins. AAdding a race card on Monday, July 27
provides our horsemen and women with additional
opportunities to run their horses.@
Robbins said Del Mar is looking at making up races from the
two other lost days during the balance of the season, which goes
to Sept. 7.
Racing secretary David Jerkens said entries for the July 27 card
would be drawn Friday, July 24.
AWe applaud Del Mar=s management for quickly adapting
during these unprecedented times,@ said Nick Alexander,
chairman of the Thoroughbred Owners of California. AWinning a
race at Del Mar is special and a four-day race week will provide
our members with additional opportunities to do so.@
Del Mar=s reformatted racing program now features seven
stakes races scheduled for next weekend. Four of them have
been shifted forward from their planned spots this weekend.
They are the Daisycutter H. July 24, Smiling Tiger S. July 25,
GII San Diego H. July 25 and the GII Eddie Read S. July 26.
SPA NOTES: COUNTRY GRAMMER POSSIBLE
FOR RUNHAPPY TRAVERS Paul Pompa, Jr.=s GIII Peter Pan S. hero Country Grammer
(Tonalist) could make his next appearance in the GI Runhappy
Travers S. at Saratoga Aug. 8, the owner told the NYRA notes
team Friday.
"If he comes back well, the Travers would be the logical spot.
It's coming back a little soon but so far, so good," Pompa, Jr.
said. "We always have liked this horse, but the COVID-19
situation has created gaps, just due to lack of racing."
A $60,000 Keeneland September yearling turned $450,000
OBS April breezer, Country Grammer broke his maiden going
nine furlongs over the Aqueduct last November and resumed
with an even fifth to Ete Indien (Summer Front) in the GII Fasig-
Tipton Fountain of Youth S. Feb. 29. He was a wide-trip third in
Belmont allowance company June 4, but enjoyed a smoother
run in transit in Thursday=s Peter Pan, sneaking through at the
rail turning for home before outlasting >TDN Rising Star=
Carocaro (Uncle Mo).
Country Grammer became the second graded winner for his
second-crop sire in the Peter Pan. The other, Tonalist=s Shape, is
the morning-line favorite for Saturday=s GI CCA Oaks at
Saratoga.
Dayoutoftheoffice Likely to Reappear During Meet... Dayoutoftheoffice (Into Mischief), who gave trainer Tim
Hamm his first Saratoga stakes winner when upsetting
Thursday=s GIII Schuylerville S. at odds of 19-1, is likely to
contest one or both of the graded races for juvenile fillies at the
Spa over the course of the next six weeks.
"The [GII] Adirondack S. [Aug. 12, 6 1/2 furlongs] is a possibility
and the [GI] Spinaway [Sept. 6, seven furlongs] is possible. I
don't know if we would do both or [just] one of the two. But
we'll probably run her up back there at least once."
Owned by Hamm in partnership with breeder Siena Farm,
Dayoutoftheoffice--who led home an Into Mischief exacta--
posted a front-running, 4 3/4-length debut victory over
4 1/2 furlongs at Gulfstream May 14. Hamm was confident that
his filly would relish the extra real estate in the Schuylerville.
"It's the kind of read we had on her training up to her first
race. We thought the 4 1/2 [furlongs] might be too short for
her," he said. Cont. p9

"But she got that down, and I was optimistic she wanted to run
farther than that. I believe if she stretches out, she'll be able to
handle that as well. If you don't look good there, it closes a lot of
doors. But if you win, you have options open, and you just want
to lay out a good schedule now and get her where she needs to
be."
Tap It To Win Aiming For Jerkens... Live Oak Plantation=s Tap It To Win (Tapit), who defeated GIII
Peter Pan S. hero Country Grammer in the aforementioned June
4 allowance ahead of a low-odds fifth to Tiz the Law
(Constitution) in the GI Belmont S. 16 days later, breezed a half-
mile in :48.09 Monday morning and will shorten back up for the
seven-furlong GI H. Allen Jerkens S. presented by Runhappy at
Saratoga Aug. 1.
"He's looking good. We're going to the Allen Jerkens with him
and he should fit well in there," said Jamie Begg, assistant to
trainer Mark Casse. "I think the cutback to seven-eighths is good
and we'll be able to sit off the speed and make a run."
SARATOGA REGULARS BRING THE SPA TO
THEIR BACKYARD By Katie Ritz
AAnd they=re off at Saratoga!@
Five words that hundreds, if not thousands, of people live to
hear every July as the ceremonial phrase marks the beginning of
another historic Saratoga Race Meet.
While most normal attendees were unable hear those Tom
Durkin-inspired words in person this year, some did their best to
make the most of the situation.
The enthusiasm from Mark Struffolino might be the example
racing fans should look to emulate. Born and raised in upstate
New York, the Rotterdam resident grew up spending summers
at the Spa, and has attended opening day with the same group
of friends for nearly 30 years.
Struffolino knew that his friends would be devastated when
they couldn=t spend their summer weekends in Saratoga=s
famed backyard as they have for decades, so he brought the
tradition right to their hometown.
Over the past two months, the Saratoga fanatic has been busy
building his own picnic area in his backyard. The project was
finished on the eve of opening day, and is now complete with a
TV kiosk, a red-and-white striped quarter pole, and of course, a
picnic table.
AThis all started because of the pandemic,@ Struffolino said.
AMy buddies were all down in the dumps, so I knew we had to
do something. I took it upon myself to do something special for
everyone and not waste an entire summer.@
The project was initially planned as a surprise for his friends,
but Struffolino soon realized he would need some extra hands.
AWhen I got the idea, I put it all on paper and bought the
material,@ Struffolino said. AI started to build it, but then realized
I was going to need more help. So I told my friends, and they all
thought I was crazy.@
The most difficult part of the project was the kiosk umbrella.
While the Saratoga version is comprised of steel, Struffolino and
his team used framing lumber and plywood. Struffolino said the
end result was a near-400 pound canopy.
AI had concrete brought in, I had to have a building permit and
it was just a whole to-do,@ he said with a laugh.
The finishing touch was the quarter pole, which was
completed just this week.

AI saw one online and I was like no way, we have to have that,@
Struffolino said. ATuesday we finished putting in new fencing, so
we wrapped up right in time for opening day.@
While his friends may have been doubters at first, they soon
got in on the fun, even taking off work to ensure that the project
was finished before the start of the race meet.
AWe all agreed we needed to do more, we needed more,@
Struffolino said. AWe were so close to the deadline and when it
went crazy on social media, we had to get it finished. The news
has been here twice and Anthony Stabile wants to do a
fundraiser here on a dark day. The guys are so excited.@
The group is not only a band of die-hard fans, they=ve also
been involved in various partnerships over the years.
AI was in the first partnership with Parting Glass Racing with
Tom Gallo years ago,@ Struffolino recalled. AWe=ve had a couple
of our own horses and they=ve been trained by Carlos Martin.@
No matter if they have a horse running or not, the friends can
typically be found at the Spa on any given race day, and are
usually up before the crack of dawn to participate in the
traditional run for the picnic tables.
AWe=re usually at the track at 5:30 in the morning,@ Stuffolino
said. AAnd as soon as they open the gates we run in and start
with mimosas and breakfast. It=s a big to-do.@
But Struffolino said the early mornings are more than worth it
in order to fully experience the magic of Saratoga, a sentiment
shared with most Spa-goers.
AYou can=t beat the atmosphere,@ he said. AIt=s so upbeat,
everybody is having a good time. I don=t think you=ll see a sad
face in that place. It=s magical, everything about it. From opening
day to Labor Day. You can go there on a Wednesday and hang
out with 15,000 people who are all in a great mood. Where can
you do that anywhere else?@
This year the friends were still able to have a great opening
day, and certainly one that they will remember for many years
to come. Struffolino reported that of course there were still
mimosas in the morning, although this year they commenced at
eight in the morning instead of six.
ANobody works on opening day because it=s Christmas Day,@ he
said. AIt=s nothing from the gambling standpoint for us, it=s the
people we=ve met. Between ownership and friends of friends,
we=ve met a lot of great people. So we=re going to do the same
thing we normally do because it=s something to look forward to
now. It=s difficult enough with the pandemic. The whole world
has changed. So this was a way to gain some normalcy without it
being 100% normal.@
LONE STAR PARK TO RESUME JULY 19 Racing at Lone Star Park, which was suspended July 5 after an
employee in racing operations tested positive for COVID-19, will
resume this Sunday, July 19, with strict protocols in place,
according to the track=s Twitter feed. The protocols provide for
live attendance, but fans will be required to wear facemasks,
follow social distancing rules and will be subjected to
temperature screening.
Sunday=s nominal feature is a first-level allowance for main-
track sprinters and the track has drawn programs through
July 22. The Wednesday program, which begins at 1:35 CT, is
highlighted by four Texas-bred/Texas-stallion stakes races that
were to be contested during the supension.
According to a post on the Texas Thoroughbred Association
Twitter feed, purses at Lone Star are being raised by 18%
beginning this weekend, though none of the purses for the races
drawn through the coming week reflects the hike. The post also
indicates that two additional race dates have been added,
Aug. 5 and Aug. 12. The races for those dates will be those that
were previously canceled and brought-back book races. Both
divisions of the $100,000-estimated Texas Thoroughbred (Sales)
Futurity will be run Aug. 11, however the second legs of the
Texas Stallion Stakes have been postponed. The TTA said it
hopes to conduct those races at Sam Houston Race Park in
January.

BODY SOUL: HOME IS WHERE THE HEART ISby Robert D. Fierro, DataTrack
With apologies to Pliny the Elder, who more than two
centuries ago penned those words in the headline, and also to
Elvis, who expanded their meaning in a modest ballad of the
same name in 1962, we are about to examine what has evolved
after at least 40 years as a science-based axiom of racing
efficiency and success: How much of a factor does the cardio
system of a Thoroughbred influence its ability?
Let us state up front that the answer to that question may
depend on which scientific tools or evaluation programs are
used to gather the data required. That's because there are a
number of providers which offer services that purport to
determine whether a horse's cardio system (not just the heart,
which is part of the system) is capable of generating enough fuel
to provide the energy needed to achieve success at either a
distance or class level. Your correspondent has been using one
such system for more than 30 years.
However, we are here to report a deeply researched study of a
particular group of racing prospects and how they fared on the
racetrack after their hearts were scanned by ultrasound and
their body sizes calculated to determine whether the cardio
system "passes or fails" various criteria, described further on in
this essay.
The study in question is based on data gathered by DataTrack's
BreezeFigsJ system and published daily since 2005 by Daily
Racing Form online (www.drf.com). Simply stated, BreezeFigs is
a speed-and-stride-length based "fig" which was earned by
every horse that breezed at every major 2-year-old sale held
from 2012 through 2017.
Those which pass conformation inspection at the barns are
selected for cardio ultrasound scans. Thus, this study
concentrated on a focus group of 865 fillies and 1,253 colts
whose performance at the sales prompted our analysts to
obtain those scans.
The data gathered from each scan is run through an algorithm
that takes into consideration the size of the heart, its pumping
efficiency and the horse's body size. This gives us a Cardio Score
which is based on a numerical system that is akin to a "report
card" of six grades of equal decimal distance: A, B+, B, C+, C, D--
the higher the numerical score the higher the "report card
Cardio Grade," ergo the more efficient the system for that
horse.
What the system does not do, however, is disqualify a racing
prospect based on the size of the heart alone because body size
and cardio pumping efficiency play a big role in the score. A
simple analogy might be to compare the size and structure of
the horse to an automobile model and the efficiency of the
cardio system to horsepower of the engine, to wit:
A horse which is a Maserati in structure with what appears to
be an average size heart may generate a B+ Cardio Grade
because that heart (engine) can rev up quickly to deliver the
right amount of fuel for that chasis. However, if the heart is
more like the engine of a Chevy Suburban, it will most likely take
a longer time to pump up to overall efficiency and the race
could be over, and thus wind up with a C+ Cardio Grade.
The first conclusion reached was that, in general, the higher
the Cardio Grade the more starts and average earnings. For
example, fillies that won only one race but had a B or B+ Cardio
Grade averaged more starts and twice the earnings of those
with a Cardio Grade C that won one race. Similarly, colts with a
Cardio Grade B that won three or more races earned 50% more
on average than colts with a Grade C average that won three or
more races. There are plenty of other examples, but one should
get the drift.

The dividing line was even stronger when it came to stakes
winners which, after all, is what everyone wants to buy. Below
are the distributions per Cardio Grade of black-type winners in
North America and countries to which 2-year-old graduates
were exported. As the charts indicate, more than 80% of the
fillies and colts that won stakes races had Cardio Grades of B or
better.
With data such as this, one can appreciate the irony of lyrics of
a tune from Damn YankeesY
"You've gotta have heart,
All you really need is heart
When the odds are sayin' you'll never win,
That's when the grin should start."*
Y which these days can apply with equal meaning to humans
and those who breed, own, train, ride and bet on
Thoroughbreds.

AIM FUNDRAISER IN SARATOGA
Ramon Dominguez will serve as the honorary committee
chairman for AIM Services= annual Saratoga fundraiser, held in
town from July 26-Aug. 2. AIM is the area's largest provider of
services to people with intellectual and developmental
disabilities, and its re-imagined annual fundraiser will be a door-
to-door downtown event called ACroquet OFF the Green,@ aimed
to bring foot traffic to recently re-opened Saratoga retail shops
and restaurants while raising awareness and funds for AIM
Services.
The event also celebrates the 30th anniversary of the
Americans with Disabilities Act which coincides with the launch
date. All activities are being conducted according to the
NY-Forward COVID-19 recommendations.
AIM is seeking croquet "players," honorary committee
members ($100 donation), and sponsors for the event.
"Among the people who receive quality innovative services
from AIM are those with traumatic brain injuries," said
Dominquez, a Saratoga Springs resident. "As a jockey who had
to retire early due to a head injury, I am just one of 54 million
people annually who experience a traumatic brain injury. AIM
gives people with TBIs a chance at living the most independent
life possible."

AIM Fundraiser cont.
Anyone over 18 years of age can register to be an AIM Services
Croquet OFF the Green player. Thirty participating Saratoga
businesses will have croquet wickets on display on their
entrance door or front display windows. Inside they will have
scorecards and stamps to mark that you visited their store.
Patronage at a store with a wicket counts as a croquet score.
Every stamp gives the player an entry into the grand prize
drawing. There is no limit to the number of stamps a player can
receive.
"We knew that the event had to be drastically different this
year and we are thrilled with the positive response we have
received from Saratoga business owners and the Saratoga
Chamber of Commerce," said Chris Lyons, Executive Director of
AIM Services, Inc. "We hope that as the players go from store to
store to complete their wickets, they support each store and
also take the opportunity to support AIM."
"We have all had to figure out a new normal as we go about
our lives in the shadow of this pandemic, and a large part of that
is rethinking how we can support the community around us,"
said Stacy De Garay, sales Manager at Savory Pantry in Saratoga
Springs. "AIM Services has always provided invaluable resources
to people of diverse abilities in Saratoga and the surrounding
counties, so it is important that we continue to help out with
their fundraising efforts, as different as they may be this year."
The grand prize drawing will include chances to win an
overnight package in Saratoga Springs, private boat rental on
Saratoga Lake, retail and dining gift certificates, a Lake George
Holiday Inn Resort stay with two cruise passes from the Lake
George Steamboat Co., a custom corn-hole kit and various retail
and dinner gift certificates.
COMMEMORATIVE BOTTLE TO HONOR
BASSETT Breeders= Cup and Maker=s Mark have announced the 2020
limited edition Maker=s Mark bottle from the Charity for
Champions program which will honor former Keeneland and
Breeders= Cup president James E. >Ted= Bassett. The Charity for
Champions program began in 2015, with the goal of helping to
raise money for Thoroughbred industry charities.
Old Friends Thoroughbred Retirement Facility in Georgetown,
Kentucky, has been named as one of the official charity
beneficiaries. Old Friends is home to former Breeders= Cup
champions Alphabet Soup, Eldaafer, Little Mike and Amazombie.
Old Friends cares for over 200 retired Thoroughbreds in six
locations.
"Old Friends is honored to team up with the National Racing
Museum and Hall of Fame and the Race Track Chaplaincy of
America to pay tribute to Ted Bassett," said Old Friends
President and founder Michael Blowen. "Mr. Bassett, who has
visited Old Friends on numerous occasions, is an enthusiastic
supporter. His ambassadorship on behalf of these great
Thoroughbreds is unparalleled and we are overjoyed that
Breeders' Cup and Maker's Mark are saluting him with this
magnificent bottle."
RUSSELL SIDELINED WITH BROKEN WRIST
Laurel-based jockey Sheldon Russell, who leads the current
summer meet, will miss at least two months with a broken right
wrist suffered in a gate mishap Thursday at Delaware Park.
Agent Marty Leonard said the 32-year-old Russell was hurt
after being unseated by his mount Maliceinthepalace (Palace
Malice), a 3-year-old filly trained by Michael Gorham, as the
horses were loading for Delaware=s third race. She would go on
to run fourth under Alex Cintron.
AWalking into the gate the horse just reared up and he came
off,@ Leonard said. AWhen he came off, he landed on the ground
and used his hand to brace his fall and that=s what did it. The
second he hit the ground he said he knew it was broken. They
went and got X-rays and that confirmed it.@

MISCHIEF JUVENILE KICKS OFF CAREER IN
SPA OPENER
1st-SAR, $72K, Msw, 2yo, 5 1/2f, 1:10 p.m. ET
MO MISCHIEF (Into Mischief), purchased by Myracehorse.com
and Spendthrift Farm for $500,000 after breezing a quarter in
:21 at OBS March, makes his debut for Todd Pletcher. The 9-5
morning-line favorite is out of the multiple stakes-placed
Montbrook mare Montessa G.
"He's a horse that we really liked when we bought him," said
Spendthrift Farms' General Manager Ned Toffey. "Saratoga is
the best of the bests, it's where people love to unveil their
2-year-olds and you better have your big-boy pants on when
you go to the starting gate at Saratoga."
Fellow firster Momos (Distorted Humor), a $180,000 OBS
March graduate (:21), was produced by a half-sister to GISWs
Daddys Lil Darling (Scat Daddy) and Mongolian Saturday (Any
Given Saturday). He is trained by Christophe Clement. Repo
Rocks (Tapiture), just a $70,000 KEESEP yearling, displays a
flashy worktab for Hall of Famer Bill Mott for this debut run.

>TDN Rising Star= Indian Pride, a runaway debut winner at the

Slightly favored, the well-bred Brereton C. Jones homebred led
the field through an opening quarter in :23.13. Javier Castellano
left the rail open aboard Indian Pride and Joy Epifora (Arg)
(Fortify) made a bold move to take a narrow advantage as they
hit the quarter pole while nine-time winner Blamed made a

menacing three-wide bid of her own. Indian Pride still had
plenty left, however, and after Joy Epifora backed out of it in the
stretch, she boxed on gamely to outslug Blamed in a race that
didn=t deserve a loser.
"She showed what she's made of today,@ winning trainer Chad
Brown said. AI was really proud of her effort. She's always been a
horse that had immense talent. When she broke her maiden
here last summer it was breathtaking really, arguably the most
impressive win we had last year. She's had some bumps and
bruises along the way in terms of the interrupted schedule, but
now she has two straight races under her belt and I hope to
have her for the whole season."
Third as the favorite in last fall=s GII Lexus Raven Run S. at
Keeneland, the bay returned from the bench with a sharp
allowance victory at Belmont June 20.
Ms. Cornstalk=s most recent produce includes: Robert and
Lawana Low=s unraced 2-year-old colt and $700,000 KEESEP

While favored Catch a Bid (Real Solution) could only manage a
fifth-place run here, the bottomless Chad Brown barn still made
up the $93.50 exacta with its second and third stringers. A
stakes winner and Group 3-placed for Ger Lyons in Ireland,
Viadera was ninth in a Leopardstown handicap in September
before making the trans-Atlantic journey. She was fourth behind
stablemate Newspaperofrecord (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) in the
seven-furlong GIII Intercontinental S. over yielding sod June 6,
and was flattered a bit when that runner came back to dominate
the GI Just a Game S. June 27. Tracking from midpack one off
the fence in a paceless affair, the bay still had some work to do
down the center of the track turning for home as Catch a Bid
took over. She continued to gobble up ground in the run to the
line, and made the last and winning move of the Brown trio.
"I was really pleased with her trip,@ Brown said of the winner.
AJoel [Rosario] got to know her that first time out. It's been
frustrating. She's been ready to run for months now and with
cancellations and such, we had to just sprint her the first time.
She got a race under her belt, but she trained much sharper the
second time out, and she showed that leaving the gate.
AShe kind of lost herself back in the field in her last race,@
Brown continued. AWe expected her to get better position this
time. I thought Joel did a great job. The runner-up ran terrific,
too. I was sorry there had to be a horse to lose. They both ran
winning races there. Viadera just had a little cleaner trip.@
The winner hails from a typically deep Juddmonte family that

Investec Oaks second Ennistymon looks to go
one better on Saturday | Racing Post
A 2-year-old breezes on the Rowley Mile | Emma Berry
IRISH OAKS TAKESCENTRE STAGE
Aidan O=Brien will be looking to bring down more barricades
on Saturday as he chases the record of Sir Michael Stoute in The
Curragh=s G1 Juddmonte Irish Oaks. With five wins in the mile-
and-a-half Classic, he sits one shy of the tally wracked up over
the decades by the Newmarket-based legend and it will be no
surprise were he to join him in 2020. Four fillies contest the
latest renewal from Rosegreen, with Evie Stockwell=s G1 Epsom
Oaks and G2 Ribblesdale S. runner-up Ennistymon (Ire) (Galileo
{Ire}) the current standard-bearer on that form. Normally, being
beaten nine lengths in the Epsom monument would be no
commendation coming into this equivalent, but to be that
distance from her exalted stablemate Love (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) is
probably creditable. AWe=ve been very happy with Ennistymon
since her last run in Epsom. She ran a great race, so we=re
looking forward to this,@ O=Brien said.
Ennistymon=s rider Wayne Lordan was on Snow (Ire) (Galileo
{Ire}) when she beat her elders in the G3 Munster Oaks at Cork
on July 5, which was her first try at this trip. Previously runner-
up in the June 21 G3 Blue Wind S. over 10 furlongs on June 21,
the full-sister to Kew Gardens (Ire) is charting the kind of
progress that makes one from her stable with her pedigree
impossible to discount in this company. Cont. p2
WILDCARDS ADDED TO GORESBRIDGE Twenty-three wildcards have been added to the July 24
Tattersalls Ireland Goresbridge Breeze-Up Sale which, due to
COVID-19 travel restrictions, will take place at Park Paddocks in
Newmarket this year rather than Fairyhouse in Ireland. The
breeze is scheduled for the Rowley Mile on July 22.
Among the wildcards are lot 227, a No Nay Never half-brother
to stakes winner We Are Ninety (Ire) (Thewayyouare); lot 230, a
filly by red hot second-season sire Night Of Thunder (Ire) out of
a full-sister to G3 Gladness S. winner Sruthan (Ire) (Arakan); lot
248, a Kodiac (GB) filly whose dam is a half-sister to the Listed
Hilary Needler Trophy winner Geesala (Ire) (Barathea {Ire}) and
the listed-placed Tomintoul Singer (Ire) (Johannesburg); lot 250,
a Shalaa (Ire) colt whose dam is closely related to Dabirsim (Fr)
(Hat Trick {Jpn}) and is also from the family of Sea Of Class (Ire)
(Sea The Stars {Ire}) and her slew of over-achieving sisters; lot
251, a Siyouni (Fr) brother to two listed-placed winners; lot 253,
a filly by exciting young sire Make Believe (GB); and lot 254, an
American Pharoah filly who is the second foal out of the listed-
winning Innocent Love (Grand Slam).

Irish Oaks Takes Centre Stage cont. from p1
That also applies to Laburnum (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), who came
off second-best in a tussle with the Ger Lyons-trained Even So
(Ire) (Camelot {GB}) in the Listed Naas Oaks Trial over a mile and
a quarter last time on July 4.
AWe were delighted with Laburnum the last day, she was very
inexperienced going into it--a baby, really,@ O=Brien said of the
full-sister to Roderic O=Connor (Ire). AWhen she won her maiden
she didn=t know much, so we felt that she had to run again to
learn. She seems to be in good form and is stepping up to a mile
and a half. It will be very interesting to see what happens with
her, but there is every chance she is going to move up plenty.
She is a very straightforward filly.@
Romanised Returns Earlier on the Curragh card, the O=Brien-Lordan combination is
in evidence in the G2 Paddy Power Minstrel S. on the exciting
Lancaster House (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), who beat the high-class
Speak In Colours (GB) (Excelebration {Ire}) with authority in the
G3 Gladness S. over this seven-furlong trip on June 13. He has to
contend with last year=s winner Romanised (Ire) (Holy Roman
Emperor {Ire}), who stages his return to action for Robert Ng
and Ken Condon. Already successful in the 2018 G1 Irish 2000
Guineas, he proved himself a genuine top-class performer on his
latest two outings when winning the G1 Prix Jacques le Marois
and finishing runner-up in the G1 Prix du Moulin.
Aidan O=Brien=s record in the G2 GAIN Railway S. is
remarkable, with his tally of 13 successes just one short of the
late great Vincent O=Brien. Wayne Lordan is on the June 26
course-and-distance maiden winner Merchants Quay (Fr) (No
Nay Never), leaving Michael Hussey to partner the July 3 Navan
maiden scorer Forest of Dreams (Ire) (No Nay Never). Jessie
Harrington saddles Zhang Yuesheng=s June 8 Naas maiden
winner Lucky Vega (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}), while Ger Lyons
relies on To Glory (GB) (Toronado {Ire}) who was off the mark
over another 150 yards on debut at Limerick on June 29.
The fixture=s other pattern race is the G2 Comer Group
International Curragh Cup, in which Lordan is on Ballydoyle=s
unexposed June 18 Fairyhouse maiden-winning 3-year-old
Memorabilis (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) as he takes on Lloyd Williams=s
veteran Twilight Payment (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}) who scored over
course and distance last time in the June 27 G3 Vintage Crop S.

Sprinters Shine In Hackwood Earlier in the afternoon, Newbury host the G3 bet365
Hackwood S. for the sprinters, with Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Al
Maktoum=s >TDN Rising Star= Repartee (Ire) (Invincible Spirit
{Ire}) looking to step up on his winning return in Windsor=s
Listed Carnarvon S. over this six-furlong trip on June 28. Among
the unexposed 3-year-old=s opponents is last year=s G2 City of
York S. winner Shine So Bright (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}), who
was third when attempting to force the issue in the seven-
furlong Listed Surrey S. at Epsom on July 4. AAs long as the
ground is on the quick side, I would hope he=ll run very well. I
think they=re calling the ground good at the moment and as long
as it stays that way, I=m sure he=ll be fine,@ trainer Andrew
Balding said. AHe=s a very useful horse on his day and I was
happy with his last run at Epsom.@
Also on the card is the Listed bet365 Rose Bowl S. over six
furlongs, where Manton Park Racing=s Method (Ire) (Mehmas
{Ire}) bids to uphold the form of his Doncaster debut on June 26.
Having beaten the subsequent G2 Duchess of Cambridge S.
runner-up Fev Rover (Ire) (Gutaifan {Ire}) there by 4 1/4 lengths,
there is an understandable air of excitement surrounding the
latest Martyn Meade project. AHe was quite impressive at
Doncaster, but this is a totally different ball game,@ he said with
a dash of humility. AHe=s come out the race really well and I=m
expecting him to progress and make a good showing of himself.
It=s a natural stepping-stone. It=s just the right sort of race for
him. I think he learnt a lot the other day.@

Evie Stockwell purchased Ennistymon=s dam Lahinch as a

winner at two and three and Group 2-placed. Ennistymon is her
10th and most recently reported foal and she is a three-quarter

who threw for Stockwell the G1 Cheveley Park S. winner Brave

Ireland and later New Zealand before beginning her broodmare
career in the antipodes. Breeze Hill=s siblings also include the
stakes winners Shinko King (Ire), Archway (Ire) and Royal Court

NEW YORK GIRL (IRE) (New Approach {Ire}BAnnee Lumiere
{Ire}, by Giant=s Causeway)
Bred by P F & Peter Kelly, New York Girl was selected by Cathy
Grassick for 32,000gns as a Tattersalls December Foal from the
Ballybin Stud consignment and now carries the colours of
Healthy Wood Co Ltd. New York Girl is out of the French listed-
placed Annee Lumiere, who is a half-sister to the dam of the
talented American mare More Chocolate (Malibu Moon).
PASSION (IRE) (Galileo {Ire}BDialafara (Fr), by Anabaa)
Bred by Lynch Bages and Camas Park Stud, Passion was
hammered down for 800,000gns at Book 1 of the Tattersalls
October Yearling Sale to SackvilleDonald and now races for the
Coolmore partners. The winner of one of her six starts, Passion
is a full-sister to G1 Irish Derby and G1 St Leger victor Capri (Ire)
and G3 Loughbrown S. scorer Cypress Creek (Ire). The dam,
Dialafara, was bought for i175,000 from Arqana December in
2010, the ticket signed by Mags O=Toole.
SNOW (IRE) (Galileo {Ire}BChelsea Rose {Ire}, by Desert King
{Ire})
Bred by Barronstown Stud and bought by MV Magnier for 1.2-
million gns at Tattersalls October, the last-out G3 Munster Oaks
winner Snow is out of G1 Moyglare Stud S. winner Chelsea Rose,
who was a i450,000 purchase from breeder Airlie Stud at Goffs
November in 2012 with BBA Ireland signing the ticket. Chelsea
Rose=s eventual G3 Prix de Ris-Organis winner and G1 Prix
Maurice de Gheest second Thawaany (Ire) (Tamayuz {GB}) was a
2-year-old at the time and she has since produced the 2018 G1
St Leger, G2 British Champions Long Distance Cup and G2
Queen=s Vase winner Kew Gardens (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}).
YAXENI (FR) (Maxios {GB}BKithonia {Fr}, by Sadler=s Wells)
SBA Racing=s Yaxeni was bred by the Niarchos Family and sold
through Norelands Stud to Gaelic Bloodstock as a yearling for
i8,000 at Goffs February. Her listed-placed dam is out of a half-
sister to G1 Prix du Jockey Club winner Hernando (Fr) (Niniski)
and G1 Prix Lupin victor Johann Quatz (Fr) (Sadler=s Wells).
NANDO PARRADO OUT OF PAPIN Sunday=s G2 Prix Robert Papin was set to be a showdown
between Royal Ascot winners Nando Parrado (Ire) (Kodiac {GB})
and The Lir Jet (Ire) (Prince Of Lir {Ire}), but that clash will have
to wait with Nando Parrado having turned up lame on Friday
morning.
AI=m afraid Nando pulled out a bit sore this morning,@ trainer
Clive Cox said of the 150-1 G2 Coventry S. winner. AIt=s a huge
disappointment, but we know we=ve got a serious horse on our
hands and we just can=t take the risk. It=s just bad timing more
than anything, but we can=t take him to France for a Group 2
when he=s just not 100%.@
Cox was non-committal with regards to next month=s G1 Prix
Morny.
AWe=ll see,@ he said. AI don=t think it=s anything too major--I=m
hopeful he=ll be alright in a few days. We think he=s a horse with
a very bright future.@

UNDECIDED Trainer Ed Walker said Bjorn Nielsen=s Listed Lingfield Derby
Trial winner English King (Fr) (Camelot {GB}) is Areally well@ two
weeks after running fifth as the favourite in the G1 Investec
Derby, but that no future plans have been decided.
AHe=s recovered from Epsom and put the weight back on that
he lost--we=re very happy with him,@ the trainer said.

GOODWOOD TO HAVE SPECTATORS ON
FINAL DAY Some spectators will be allowed to attend the final day of the
Qatar Goodwood Festival on Aug. 1 as part of a pilot test of
crowds at sporting events organized by The Department for
Digital, Culture, Media and Sport. Attendance will initially be
offered to Goodwood annual members and their guests. People
onsite, including spectators and participants, will be capped at
5,000. The Racecourse Association said Goodwood was chosen
as an appropriate location for the pilot because it is in a Arural
setting with a low prevalence rate of the virus.@
David Armstrong, chief executive of the Racecourse
Association and chair of the welcoming crowds industry group,
said, AWe welcome the fact that horse racing is to be selected as
one of the pilot events to welcome back crowds and my team
and I acknowledge the great responsibility upon us. The safety
protocols involved will be stringent and the Goodwood
Racecourse team are in a fantastic place to implement them.
AThe sport has come together to offer support to ensure the
pilot event provides us with sufficient learnings that others may
follow in time. These learnings will allow us to draft
industry-wide protocols for the wider scale return of crowds as
soon as we are able.@
Sports Minister Nigel Huddleston said, AFor months millions of
us have felt the void of being unable to go to the match to
support our team or attend a top-class sporting event. So I am
pleased that we are now able to move forward with a plan to
help venues safely reopen their doors to fans.
AI recognise that not every sport, team or club has the benefit
of huge commercial revenue, and it is often their dedicated fans
that are the lifeblood which helps keep them going. By working
closely with sports and medical experts, these pilots will help
ensure the safe return of fans to stadia. Although it will remain
some time before venues are full to capacity, this is a major step
in the right direction for the resumption of live spectator sport
across the country.@
IRISH STATISTICS DRIVE HOME COVID
IMPACT
Horse Racing Ireland on Friday released its mid-year figures,
and with indicators down across the board they highlighted the
severe repercussions the COVID-19 pandemic has had.
Betting with on-course bookmakers and the Tote was down
73.9% through the first half of the year; the public has not been
allowed on an Irish racecourse since early March, and thus
attendance has been down by 80%. Eighty-seven fixtures were
lost between March and June, and severe interruption to the
sales calendar meant public auction sales in Ireland are down
87.3% year-on-year.
The number of active owners is down 13.9%, however that
figure has been on the rise since racing returned. The number of
horses in training was down 1.6% for the first half of the year.
TDN EUROPE • PAGE 7 OF 13 • THETDN.COM SATURDAY • 18 JULY 2020

FIRST-SEASON SIRESWITH RUNNERS
However, at the end of June, it jumped up 6.8% year-on-year,
reflecting the return of both the flat and National Hunt
programmes. Field sizes are up 3.4%.
Brian Kavanagh, chief executive of HRI, said, ATwenty-twenty
has been a devastating year for the country and like many other
sectors, the horse racing and breeding industry has suffered
greatly having effectively come to a standstill on Mar. 24.
Against that background, any comparison with previous years is
futile. Nevertheless, a few key points are worth highlighting.
AThe absence of attendances is having a devastating impact on
racecourses and the businesses that depend on them such as
on-course bookmakers, Tote, caterers and so on. Horse Racing
Ireland and the racecourses are working to develop methods by
which attendance can return once deemed appropriate by the
Government. This is challenging and the contribution to the
industry by the racecourses in continuing to race behind closed
doors since June 8 is commendable.
AWhile traditionally the quieter part of the year, bloodstock
sales figures for the first half of 2020 were decimated. The sales
companies have shown flexibility with regard to their dates and
HRI is working with them and government to ensure that sales
can safely resume in Ireland in August. The equivalent sales of
those scheduled to be held between now and the end of the
year generated i150-million in turnover for Irish breeders in
2019, much of it to overseas buyers.
AWith the support of the Department of Agriculture, Food and
the Marine, horse breeding and training were able to continue
safely during the period of restrictions and owners have shown
great loyalty with just a small drop in the number of horses in
training. HRI is committed to restoring as many of the lost
opportunities as possible and has previously announced revised
fixtures and race programmes for the rest of the year which will
provide opportunities for horses at all levels. I would like to
acknowledge the contribution of owners, both domestic and
international, in retaining their horses in training which has
protected employment and economic activity in rural Ireland.
AHorse Racing Ireland welcomes the strong commitment to
develop the industry over the coming years contained in the
recently published Programme for Government, particularly in
the context of the challenges provided by Covid-19 and Brexit.
The racing and breeding industry is one which will contribute to
the economic recovery, generating employment and a
significant level of international investment into the Irish rural
economy. Horse Racing Ireland is working with all elements of
the industry to mitigate the impact of the current crisis,
however, the challenges facing many participants are
significant.@

HESMONDS TO SELL YEARLING FARM
Hesmonds Stud has listed for sale its yearling preparation base
Tourles Farm at East Hoathly, near Lewes in East Sussex.
The 114-acre farm has been the subject of significant
investment as of late, and the facilities include a yearling
preparation centre, a four furlong gallop, a 20 metre by 40
metre schooling ring, lunge ring, 25-box barn and a three
bedroom cottage. Hesmonds Studs was purchased in 2010 by
Nurlan Bizakov, who has made substantial investments in the
property and also purchased Monfort et Preaux in Normandy,
France last year. Windsor Clive International is handling the sale,
and that firm=s William Harford said, ATourles Farm is one of the
best presented farms we have offered in recent years. It=s
extensive range of facilities dictate that Tourles will attract
interest from every quarter of the professional, equine world.@

FINEST (IRE) (f, 2, The Gurkha {Ire}--Pearl Grey {GB} {SW &

Bellewstown when fifth going one mile there last month and
tanked to the front after the initial strides of this fourth start.
Comfortable in front for the most part, the 15-2 chance was
punched along passing the quarter-mile marker and came under
a drive inside the final 100 yards to bravely hold the late charge
of Amber Kite (Ire) (New Bay {GB}) by a nose, becoming the first
winner for her freshman sire (by Galileo {Ire}). AShe did that well

Anthony Mithen | Bronwen Healy
Strasbourg | TDNAusNZ
ON THE FARM WITHANTHONY MITHEN
by Paul Vettise
TDN AusNZ continues its series in which we quiz Australasian
stud identities about their operations, backgrounds and
thoughts on the wider thoroughbred industry. Today, we chat
with Rosemont Stud=s Anthony Mithen. Rosemont=s stallion
roster was boosted by the arrival last year of Shamus Award,
who will stand at $19,800 inc GST in 2020 and Starspangled-
banner at the same fee. Newcomer Strasbourg will stand at an
introductory fee of $11,000 inc GST, Starcraft (NZ) will be
offered at $8800 inc GST and Nostradamus at $5500 inc GST.
TDN AusNZ: Service fees have been announced, how are you
finding the response to your roster given the current economic
uncertainty?
Anthony Mithen: We haven=t really had to alter things too
much. Shamus Award deserved a little tickle upwards given the
job he=s doing. He=s the best-performed Victorian stallion on
stakes winners to runners and I think anything under $20,000 is
great value. He=s found his mark and proving to still be very
popular. The other stallions are at competitive prices given
where the market is at and I think everyone has taken it on
board to give mare owners opportunities to make a quid
without over-extending.
TDN AusNZ: Physical type, race performance and pedigree are
all important criteria when selecting stallions, but if there were
one you'd prioritise over the others, what would it be and why?
AM: In an ideal world they would have all three and it=s almost
like 'would you stand a horse without them?' and probably I
wouldn=t. A case in point for us is Strasbourg and putting a
question like this into practice. It was the physical type that
really got me over the line with him, he=s such a beautiful horse
and if he=s a black cat having black kittens then everyone is
going to make a lot of money out of him.
He=s a magnificent specimen and that got me--he=s a $750,000
son of I Am Invincible and then throw in a race record that
includes a Group 2 win and his pedigree is okay without being
splashed with Group 1 winners all over the page, it=s acceptable.
He=s got five stars on physical and that probably answers the
question in terms of what=s most important to me, but you do
have to have a blend to make a successful stallion.
TDN AusNZ: Looking ahead to the next few years, are there any
changes to your business model you're planning and what is
your process for reviewing how your business is placed?
AM: We would like to position ourselves in the market as being
the Victorian leader with stallions and we=re going to take steps
to make that happen and look for partners to support us in that.
That=s something we=re excited to push on within the next 12
months.

With the appointment of Ryan McEvoy there=s no better time
to do that, given his area of expertise with stallions and
managing stallions like Sebring and Zoustar through Widden
Stud. We=re dedicated to excellence across the board and we=ve
assembled a great team of both humans and horses. We=re well
positioned to make an impact.
TDN AusNZ: What is the biggest challenge facing your business
at the moment?
AM: I=m sure everyone is answering with economic factors at
the moment. I do think
that we need to be very
careful about where we
are positioned in a
community sense and we
don=t lose sight of the fact
that it is very much a
community sport, and a
community employer.
We really need to make
sure the general public
who don=t really care
much for racing, don=t
have an opinion or are
ambivalent and are made
aware of that. I don=t
know that the industry
has done a good job of
that in the past. It was once a part of the fabric of being
Australian and I think that we=ve lost that a bit and become a bit
insular.
I get that there has been a lot of work done in the animal
welfare area to make sure we are beyond reproach in that
regard, but I think we can go a step further and put racing back
into the general Australian psyche. It=s a big employer and lots of
people can benefit from it and get a lot of enjoyment out of it,
including the animals that are so well cared for.
TDN AusNZ: You've worked for some interesting people
throughout your career, can you tell me who had the largest
influence on you and the lesson you will not forget?
AM: I=m not a person born into the industry and had no family
connection to it. My crossover from media into the bloodstock
business was one that was poles apart, but I drew from my now
business partner and he wasn=t one when I made that decision.
My brother-in-law Nigel Austin runs one of the most successful
clothing retail businesses in the world [Cotton On] and I=m lucky
enough to also call him a great mate and I=ve been lucky he=s
guided me to make some good business calls. Even though
breeding isn=t necessarily his number one focus, he=s certainly
got business acumen above anyone I know.
TDN AusNZ: Who currently in the industry do you look toward
for inspiration, and why?
AM: I=ve always found the Mitchell brothers, Harry and Arthur,
to be welcoming and
helpful with their time and
advice and they=ve got a
model that I aspire to.
They=ve got nice stallions
and farm and doing it all
with a smile on their faces,
and a moral compass that
points the right way.
Hopefully, one day I can end
up with an I Am Invincible in
the backyard, that would be
nice.
TDN AusNZ: Who did you
learn the most from,
regarding horse
conformation? And why do
you think they were a good judge?
AM: I=ve been someone that has taken little bits from everyone
along the way. I think back to what I looked for 17 years ago
when I left TV and thought it might be an ideal to become a
horse breeder and run a farm. I shudder in horror at my
thoughts at the time about what made a nice horse as opposed
to a decade and a-half or more down the track. There hasn=t
been any one person that I have sidled alongside and afford
myself the opportunity to be mentored, I was the peak of the
pyramid when we had four people working for us when we
started up. I had to do it all, and in reality, and history will tell
you, I didn=t know much and had to learn quickly. One good
influence was Dean Harvey, who now runs Baystone Farm and
worked for me for three or four years. He was a confidant and a
mate and he always had a nice eye for a horse. He was one I
could ask dumb questions and wouldn=t be cast aside and made
to wear the dunce hat so he deserves a rap for that.

TDN AusNZ: What physical element really hooks you into a
horse, and what trait can you not forgive?
AM: I=ve been to the races enough and looked at horses in the
mounting yard to see most things and you shake your head and
think how is this even at the races, given the world that we live
in when they=ve got to be straight and perfect everywhere.
You can go into the mounting yard at Flemington during the
carnival and you see them in all shapes and sizes, so I wouldn=t
condemn a horse for anything if they have enough going for
them in other areas. That may be naive because I=ve never
trained one, I=m sure there are trainers that can answer the
question better than me!
TDN AusNZ: Who is the best stallion physical you have ever
seen?
AM: Right now it would be Strasbourg because he=s an A1
knockout. That=s a little biased and I=ve always admired Lonhro
as a physical. He=s such a beautiful horse and I saw him as a
pre-Christmas 2-year-old up at Belmont Park at Woodlands and
had a friendship with the Hawkes family and Wayne in
particular. I went up there during a Hunter Valley tour and I still
remember looking in the box at this black horse and they said
look out for him. I followed him and backed him in his first start
and goes down as one of my all-time favourites.
TDN AusNZ: What stallion on another farm's roster would you
like to be standing?
AM: I=m lucky enough to have a breeding right in I Am Invincible
and that=s as close as I can get to a champion stallion that=s up in
the clouds like him. While we obviously don=t stand him, it=s nice
to be part of that team.
I feel the horse on the move is Capitalist with lots of numbers
and he gets them in all shapes and sizes, a bit like Written
Tycoon.
TDN AusNZ: Which four people, within the industry or outside it,
dead or alive, would you invite to a dinner party?
AM: I went with the current day and hoping and dreaming it
could come off at some stage. I would want it to be entertaining
rather than informative and that=s my social side coming out and
maybe the fact we=ve been locked down with this COVID-19.
Angus Gold, he=s a very learned horseman and screamingly
entertaining person. He=s very good on the microphone and he
could kick start the karaoke.
In similar vein, a very knowledgeable guy who I=ve had a lot to
do with and a lot of dinners in the last four or five years and I
wouldn=t hear the end of it if he didn=t get invited, and that=s
Peter Moody. He could come along and his quick wit would
certainly add to the table.
Another guy who is a loveable larrikin and has been absolutely
spectacular for the industry and just as entertaining is Gerry
Harvey. Gerry gets the third seat and the fourth seat, and I=m
going out on a limb because I don=t know him but I would
imagine that he would be quite scintillating in this company,
would be Frankie Dettori.
TDN AusNZ: Which global breeding brand do you have the
ultimate respect for?
AM: I have the utmost respect for the two international giants
of Coolmore and Godolphin. Twenty or 30 years ago they
pitched a flag in Australia and what they have been able to do,
enhance Australia by opening up very big and successful
operations here, has been fantastic.
Coolmore=s recent support of the Easter Sale and of the
industry when times are tough can=t be under-estimated. Those
two organisations, while their head offices are based elsewhere,
have done an unbelievable job for Australian breeding and
racing and continue to do so, we should be indebted to them.
