Food Desert South Bronx
A series of mapping exercises in wa-ter, food, infrastructure, natural and social ecologies rendered a view of the urban and industrial elements that make up the landscape of the South Bronx in NYC and New York State.
The South Bronx is home to the nations largest food distribution center. It is also a food desert, where resident’s access to fresh and nutritious food is seldom found locally. Forced access to fast food and pro-cessed food means that 27% of residents suffer from obesity and 17% have diabetes.
Industry proximity to major throughways means that distribution trucks and com-muter cars pass through the region daily. Subsequent noise, water, and air pollu-tion causes 1 in 4 kids to have asthma.
A case study of environmental and social tactics using various design implementa-tions was created to explore the improve-ment of these conditions.
Using transportation hubs as a center point, these elements cultivate food access and pollution remediation through socialculture and around everyday spaces.
