was about creating awareness about the Organ Donation. Amit Gupta Foundation is a part of
CICO group, which is a chemical company. AGF was established in 2009 after the death of
Late Mr. Amit Gupta who died due to organ failure.
Organ Donation is the process of removing tissues or organs from a live or recently dead
person to be used in another. Every year, a lot of people die due to shortage of organs . Life is
a gift of God . One organ can atleast save eight lives.
Mary Sinha briefed about the reasons for organ shortage in India, which included family
consent, negative attitude, lack of awareness, fear, ignorance, religious consent and legal
aspects. The organs which an individual can donate are heart, lungs, kidneys, eyes, pancreas,
bones and skin.
India’s first transplant took place in 1970. The organ donated was kidney. India has made few
strives forward since but a lot needs to be done. An organ wasted is a life lost. 10 patients
die every day due to organ shortage.
The students were also briefed about the donation rule in India and what procedure the
family and the donor must follow for the proper donation. The donations are of two types:
Live Related Donation
Deceased cadaver organ Donation
We were briefed about both the types in detail. Also, the Transplantation of Human
Organs Act, 1994 was also explained which stated that the brain death is accepted as a form
of death and the sale of organs as a punishable offence.
A question answer round was conducted on Brain Death. Students were made aware about
the donation after Brain Death. Discussion on natural death was also conducted and
difference between coma and brain death was told to the students.
The state adoption of organ donation rules were briefly described . Myths and facts about
organ donations were explained in detail. The concept of Green Corridor was also described
with an example of a child whose heart was transported from Gurgaon to Delhi (32 KM) in 29
minutes. A list of certified hospitals for transplant was also shown along with the membership
