The Balranald Shire Cultural Committee held its
annual Variety Concert to a full house at the
Theatre Royal on Friday 26 May.
The evening was packed with local artists and
other entertainers coming from Tooleybuc, Hay,
Swan Hill, Robinvale and Deniliquin to showcase
their talent from singing, ukulele playing and poetry
recitals. There was also a talented spoon player –
something that you don’t see much these days!
Balranald Shire Cultural committee member and
event organiser Margaret Butler said it was a
fabulous night that wouldn’t have been possible
without the amazing volunteers that have assisted.
Mrs Butler said she was grateful for everyone who
helped make the night an unforgettable one. "I'd
just like thank all the people who participated in the
concert and travelled just to entertain us," she said.
A pleasing array of refreshments was provided by
the Balranald Football Netball Club.
This event raised money to purchase a new curtain
for the Theatre Royal.
Variety Concert a great Success

Next Ordinary Meeting of Council
- Tuesday 18th July 2017 -
Council was recently advised by Local Government Minister Gabrielle Upton that the planned collection of the Fire and Emergency Services levy (FESL) has been deferred.
The Government continues to work in pursuit of a scheme that replaces both the insurance & existing ratepayer contributions and Council will advise you, our ratepayers when new information is available.
Robinvale-Euston Football club seniors and U18’s had a loss on 10 June, while the Reserves had a good win. I was excited to see all netball grades win their games, but the thriller between A grade Robinvale-Euston and top of the ladder South Mildura had all and sundry on the edge of their seats until the final siren when Robinvale–Euston won. Well done girls!
Balranald Football Netball Club have had a two week hiatus and I wish them well when they get back into the swing of things.
The June Council meeting was changed from Tuesday 20 June to Wednesday 28 June due to amendments to Councils draft Operational Plan incorporating the 2017/18 Budget & Revenue Policy and subsequent extension for public consultation. I hope you have had a chance to read and make your comments to the plan.
Balranald made the earth move with a 2.8 magnitude earthquake at 5.56am on 13 June… did anyone feel it?

Do you know of a rural woman who is working as a volunteer within your local government area and would like to acknowledge their contribution? NSW Department of Primary Industries' (DPI) Rural Women’s Network program is seeking your help to uncover female volunteers within NSW rural communities before 28 July 2017. These worthy women will be included in the 2017 Hidden Treasures Honour Roll acknowledging and celebrating their contributions to NSW rural communities.
Women are so often the backbone of families and communities and without their support many groups including charities, emergency services, the arts, environment, social justice, education and sporting organisations would struggle to survive. The Hidden Treasures project was initiated to promote and archive the work of these remarkable women. It is not an award program but a public tribute to the vast
number of women who give their time and energy to help others across rural, regional and remote regions. The 2017 Hidden Treasures Honour Roll will be unveiled at the NSW Rural Women’s Gathering in Narrandera on 28 October 2017. You can support this initiative by nominating a worthy recipient from within your local government area by completing an online nomination form located at http://www.dpi.nsw.gov.au/about-us/rural-support/rural-womens-network/hidden-treasures and an example of previous Hidden Treasures can be found at http://www.dpi.nsw.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0005/682151/2016-Hidden-Treasures-Honour-Roll-HR.pdf All rural women nominated will be included in the Honour Roll. For more information or if you need help with your nomination call 02 6391 3706

Friends of the Southern Cross celebrates a
successful year
You would be surprised at the progress ‘Friends of the Southern Cross’ has made in just two short years. Westland Motors shed houses the replica of Kingsford Smith’s plane with restoration work well under way, along with many items of local significance and interest.
All of this is made possible by a dedicated group of volunteers who work hard to get exhibits on display, who also open the shed to the public and promote the site to visitors and locals alike.
The committee wish to thank the generous people of Balranald and surrounds who have given or loaned items or supported their market day (held on the last Saturday of each month). They are in awe of the volunteers and supporters who work long hours at the shed or who have assisted in any way including acting as tour guides - your efforts are truly valued.
Opening hours are 10am to 2pm most days - please come in for a look or listen to snippets of Balranald’s historical memories and milestones.
Famous art work on display
Anh Do's oil painting "Stranger At The Bus Stop" has been kindly loaned to The Galley and is already creating interest. The 2015 Outback Portrait Prize will be on exhibition until September.
The Gallery relies on volunteers, so it would be best to phone before travelling over. Please try Robyn on 0418316347 or June on 0350201774
Last year Balranald Shire Council was successful in receiving a grant for the Balranald Business Online Project.
Recently the project was acquitted, having achieved it’s key goal of raising the profile and online presence of the Shire’s tourism and service industry. This was done through the development of websites for business operators who have an impact on the visitor economy but did not have a website.
On completion of the project, 20 new websites were developed for businesses which included retailers, accommodation venues and eateries. The project also delivered a series of virtual tours developed and uploaded on Google which provides an interior view of the businesses and opens their location, products and services to the online public.
Training workshops on how to optimise their businesses on Google as well as Social Media marketing were also delivered and included one-on-one sessions with a number of business operators.
Apart from the benefits that each of the participating businesses will receive by having a visible online presence, collectively it means that travellers “googling” online while traveling within our region will be more eager to stop in our towns knowing that a comprehensive range of services are available to them.
Another great benefit is that prospective visitors researching online prior to travelling will be more persuaded to come to our area as a destination because of the options and choices of services available to them that they can view online.
