Plastics
Cadmium Pigments areuniversally compatible with allpolymers and additives due totheir high thermal andchemical stability.
Their clean and bright colourshades together with ease ofdispersion, non-migration andnon-distortion propertiesmake cadmium pigments thecolourists ‘first choice’pigment for thermoplastic andthermoset polymers.
■ Polyolefins(LDPE, HDPE, PP)
■ Engineering Polymers(PA, PC, PTFE, PBT)
■ Styrenics(ABS, SAN, ASA, PS)
■ Silicone Rubber
The excellent temperaturestability ensures that polymerscontaining CadmiumPigments can be easilyre-processed and re-cycled.
Technical Benefits
High performance CadmiumPigments offer a uniquecombination of technicaladvantages, whichdifferentiate them from otherpigments whether inorganicor organic.
■ Excellent temperaturestability
■ Excellent chemicalresistance
■ Good dispersibility
■ High colour strength, opacity and covering power
■ Insoluble in solvents andwater
■ Good light andweatherfastness11
■ Non-migratory
■ Non-warping
■ Wide compatibility withorganic and inorganicpigments
■ Easily recycled
Rockwood Pigments is theworld’s leader in thetechnology and manufactureof high performanceCadmium Pigments. The Rockwood Pigmentscomprehensive range ofCadmium Pigments ismarketed through its globalsales and distributionnetwork, to service therequirements of the Plastics,Surface Coatings, Ceramics,Glass and Artist Colourindustries. Risk Assessment
In 1995 the European Unioncommissioned an independentrisk assessment on the lifecycleof cadmium pigments.
The thorough scientificassessment of the risks wascompleted in 1998 andconcluded that emissions fromthe cadmium pigment lifecycledo not pose any significant riskto man or to the environment.
Product RegulationsRockwood’s CadmiumPigments are extremelyinsoluble inorganic compounds, which are tightly controlled toensure that the level of solublecadmium conforms to thefollowing regulations:
■ Council of EuropeResolution AP(89)1 FoodContact Limits - 0.01%soluble cadmium
■ United States of AmericaTCLP Waste LeachingLimits - 1.0 ppm solublecadmium
■ Safety of Toys Directive88/378/EEC (EN71:Part 3relates to finished toycompliance) - 75 ppmsoluble cadmium

Chemical Composition
The pigmentary portion isbased on oxides of iron in theform of Hematite or Goethite. The remaining compositionconsists of varying levels ofManganese Oxides, Aluminaand Silica. The iron oxidecontent can be between 30and 75% depending on theindividual product.
Products
A range of standard andmicronised Umbers areavailable with themicronised types being thepreferred selection for thecoatings user. A Raw andBurnt Sienna complete therange.
Uses
As these materials are semi-transparent they find use inartist paints and woodstains. In the case of woodstainstheir UV absorbing proper-ties protect the wood fromdegradation by harmful UVrays.
Cautionary Note: These materials are natural products and some colour vari-ation is to be expected. Rockwood Pigments are able to offer blended productswith a greater degree of control but this has to be based on economic volumes. The presence of Manganese should be carefully taken into consideration whenformulating coatings with reactive binders.
Natural Earth or Umber andSienna pigments provide an interesting range of colours fromyellow through brown to red andgrey. The base materials are foundas naturally occurring deposits andare generally referred to as RawUmber or Raw Sienna. Upon calcination they undergo acolour change to produce deepershades known as Burnt Umber orBurnt Sienna. Being naturallyoccurring their colour can varydepending on the chemical composition, degree of calcinationas well as mining location.

The Trans-Oxide® Pigment
■ Careful control of themanufacturing process ofTrans-Oxide® pigmentsproduces needle shapedparticles approximately100nm (0.1 microns) inlength and 10nm (0.01microns) in width. Whenthese particles are fullydispersed, they do notscatter light and aretherefore completelytransparent. The very small particle sizeresults in high surface areasand oil absorption figures.
■ Due to the fine particlesize, high shear dispersionprocesses such as beadmilling are necessary toachieve completedispersions and henceexploit the full transparencyof Trans-Oxide® pigments.
