July 6, 2014 14th Sunday in Ordinary Time
ASSEMBLE IN GOD’S NAME
Silent Prayer Pour out your Spirit upon us as we gather, God of our salvation:
so your grace might strengthen us for service; so your peace might calm our troubled souls; so your hope might mend our broken hearts.
Prelude
Welcome and Announcements We welcome you in the name of our Lord, Jesus Christ! Please sign the guest book in the narthex so we can send you a welcome packet.
Gathering of Prayer Concerns and Joys Please raise your hand to share your joys or concerns to be included in the prayers of the people this day. You may also write your concern on the pink sheets and hand to the Pastor. Please mail a prayer card from the narthex to your loved one.
Centering Music - “Gather Us In” STF #2236 Here in this place new light is streaming, now is the darkness vanished away, see in this space our fears and our dreamings, brought here to you in the light of this day. Gather us in - the lost and forsaken, gather us in - the blind and the lame; call to us now, and we shall awaken, we shall arise at the sound of our name.
*Please stand for items marked with an asterisk.
Call to Worship
Leader: This is the day the Lord has made:
People: a day for praise and prayer; a day for gratitude and
generosity.
Leader: This is the time God has given us:
People: a time for singing and silence; a time for speaking and
listening.
Leader: This is the life to which God calls us:
People: a life of humility and service; a life of faith and trust.
*Hymn - “Let Us Build a House” GTG #307 vrs. 1,2,5
*Prayer of Confession
Leader: When we pray to God, do we do so with pride in what
wonderful people we are, or with that humble hope
which recognizes how we have not lived as God’s
children, and how we need God’s forgiveness and grace
in our lives? Join me as we pray to our God, saying,
All: Watching God, like the Pharisee, we think we can stick
our thumbs into life, pull out a prayer, and congratulate
ourselves for being such good Christians. Then, we
remember the harsh words we have spoken this week,
the hurt we have inflicted on someone we loved, the
lack of compassion we failed to offer to someone who
needed our help.
Forgive us, God of Grace, and deal gently with us. May
we become more like the tax collector - humble,
penitent, acknowledging our faulty lives to you. Then,
may we receive the mercy promised to us through Jesus
Christ, our Lord and Savior.
Silence is kept
*Assurance of Pardon
Leader: Forgiven and healed, we open ourselves to the grace,
the peace, the hope offered to us through our loving
God. This is the good news we have received!
People: Graced and blessed, we are able to live our lives for
others, taking them by the hand to reach that finish
line called the Kingdom. Thanks be to God. Amen.
*Musical response - “You Are the Lord, Giver of Mercy” GTG #437
You are the Lord, giver of mercy!
You are the Christ, giver of mercy!
You are the Lord, giver of mercy!
*Sharing of the Peace
Leader: The peace of Christ be with you.
People: And also with you.
PROCLAIM GOD’S WORD
Children’s Sermon
(Children Pre-K through 5th Grade may leave for Sunday School.)
Anthem - “Sent Out in Jesus’ Name” (Enviado Soy de Dios) STF #2184
Old Testament Lesson: Daniel 4:28-35 (page 810)
*Hymn - “God of Compassion, in Mercy Befriend Us” GTG #436
Gospel Lesson: Luke 18:9-17 (p. 955-956)
“Theme Song “Seven Deadly Sins” Words by James Mitchell (sung to the tune of “Gilligan’s Island”)
Of all the Seven Deadly Sins, it's Pride that is the worst. For Pride puts God and others last So Ego can come first. The Professor is a picture of our vain and stubborn race – We'd rather lose salvation than, put up with losing face. (Put up with losing face)
And, like the pious Pharisee, We're sure that we're the best; So confident, we brag to God to put us to the test. (To put us to the test.)
We run aground when we are found inviting these things in: There's Sloth, of course, and Gluttony, our Anger and our Greed, The lure of Lust, Pride and Envy, the Seven Deadly Sins!
Sermon: “The Sin of Pride: The Professor and the Pharisee “ The Rev. Dr. Katherine G. Killebrew
RESPONSE TO THE WORD
*Affirmation of Faith
Leader: Thus says the Lord: “Let not the wise man boast in his
wisdom, let not the mighty man boast in his might, let not
the rich man boast in his riches. (Jeremiah 9:23)
People: We too easily think gifts of God as coming from
ourselves. We think we have earned them and we
deserve them. Gifts are given for sharing,
Leader: When pride cometh, then cometh shame” (Proverbs 11:2)
People: We quickly fall from grace when we have trusted in our
own strength.
Leader: For if anyone thinks he is something, when he is nothing,
he deceives himself. (Galatians 6:3)
People: Forgive us Lord for living with delusions of grandeur.
We believe our own lies. We cover up our insecurities
with masks of false success.
Leader: For it is not the one who commends himself who is
approved, but the one whom the Lord commends.
(2 Corinthians 10:18)
People: You, O Lord, reprove and improve us. When we are
humble and willing to be open, we are honored.
Leader: Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it
is not arrogant. (I Corinthians 13:4)
People: We hear these words at weddings and then forget that
they are a calling to daily living, based on choice not
feelings.
Leader: Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed
by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may
discern what is the will of God, what is good and
acceptable and perfect. (Romans 12:2)
People: Help us to be your holy, humble, faithful and kind
people always seeking to build others up, rather than
tear down. Help us to be your people of peace. Amen.
Offering
Eternal God, we have heard Jesus direct us to travel light through life,
but many prized possessions weigh us down. We enjoy them!
At your alter we are faced with hard choices. Dedication of these offerings
is but a prelude to further struggle. How shall we deploy all the resources
you entrust to your care? Amen
Prayer of Dedication
