ANNUAL REPORT 2017-18
The election to the College Union is conducted in accordance with the provisions
contained in the Rules of Election given by the University. The union executive members are
elected from the class representatives who are elected through the secret ballot. The union
consists of a Chairperson, Vice Chairperson, General Secretary, two University Union
Councillors, Arts Club Secretary and Student Editor. All students related activities are carried
out under the leadership of the College Union, advised and facilitated by the Staff Advisors.

The following programs were carried out by the union in collaboration with various
departments of the college during the academic year 2017-18.
OATH TAKING CEREMONY
Oath taking ceremony of the College Union was conducted on 19th August 2017.
Dr. T.M Joseph, Principal administered the Ceremony.
COLLEGE UNION INAUGURATION
The activities of the college union 2017-2018 were inaugurated by Smt. M C Josephine
on 8-11-2017.
ANNUAL SPORTS MEET
The Sports events are planned and executed by the college union with the guidance of
Physical Education Department. This year our playfields were active with so many
competitions and training programmes. Students from all the departments participated in the
Mach Past which was also a competition item of this sports meet. Competitions of various
categories were conducted and awards of the winners were distributed.

INTER DEPARTMENTAL COMPETITIONS
Department wise Competitions of football, basketball, volleyball, shuttle badminton,
cricket, chess, tug of war, arm wrestling etc. were conducted. Many Students participated in all
the events with good sportsman spirit.
ONAM CELEBRATIONS
Onam was celebrated with great enthusiasm in a traditional manner. The students were
in traditional attire and decorated the campus with pookolam. As part of the celebrations
competitions like Thiruvatira, Onampattu and making of Flower carpet were organized for the
students.
CHRISTMAS CELEBRATIONS
Christmas was celebrated with much joy and enthusiasm by the staff and students.
Students showcased their creativity by making and decorating beautiful Christmas trees and
Cribs. Best Santa Clause and carol song competitions were also held.
COLLEGE ARTS FEST- 2017
Under the leadership of arts club and cultural committee the college arts fest was
conducted by organizing around 40 cultural competitions. All the departments participated in
the events with great enthusiasm. The competitions were organized abiding the norms and
conditions put forward by M. G. University.

MUSICAL CONCERT - MONDAY MELODY
To identify and encourage those who are blessed with the melodious voice, music club,
Nirmala College conducted ‘Monday Melody’ - the grand musical concert. This was musical
platform for the singers to express their talents. Best female voice and male voice were selected
at this time.
RESCUE AND RELIEF OPERATIONS FOR FLOOD AFFECTED PEOPLE
Kerala has witnessed an unprecedented flood during 15-22 August 2018. Lakhs of
people were stranded in their houses. Most of their houses were destroyed. Muvattupuzha town
was also inundated and thousands of people were uprooted. They were helpless and begging
for help. The college union of the college rose upto the occasion and jumped in to rescue
operations. They undertook an adventurous mission to save the lives of hundreds of people
who were stranded in houses in the midst of water logging.
HERITAGE EXHIBITION ORGANIZED ON 19 & 20 FEBRUARY 2018
The College union organized a heritage exhibition under the title (Samskruthi) on 19 & 20
February 2018 which showcased the cultural treasure of our state. Twenty-two variety stalls
were arranged by the students. The exhibition had great educational value to thousands of
people, including school and college going students in the neighborhood
CONSTRUCTION OF A HOUSE FOR WIDOW
The college student union took up a major extension activity in the form of mobilizing
Rs.2,50,000 for constructing a house for a widow at Mudavur, Smt. Sheela Madhu, whose
husband was killed in a motor accident. The contribution was of great help to the family as
they did not have any means to overcome the crisis. The teachers, non-teaching staff and
students generously contributed to the fund.
WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY CELEBRATION
The World Environment Day Lecture was delivered by Dr. V.S. Vijayan, the famous
environmental activist and former Chairman, Kerala Bio-diversity Board on 12 June 2017. The
lecture was held under the auspices of Zoology and Botany Departments with college union
and sponsored by Kerala State Council for Science Technology and Environment. The lecture
was co-ordinated by Dr. Gigi K. Joseph and Ms. Jaiby Cyriac. The World Environmental Day
was celebrated on 12 June 2017, with the financial support of KSCSTE. Dr. V.S. Vijayan,
former Chairman of Kerala Bio-Diversity Board inaugurated the event. Dr. George Mathew,
Emeritus Scientist, KFRI delivered the key note address. Dr. V.S. Vijayan also inaugurated the
Butterfly garden on the occasion.
THREE MINUTES TO FAME
The college union proudly introduced a capacity building programme for the first year
degree students of the college under the title “Three Minutes to Fame” on 11 October 2017.
The students were asked to perform any activity on the stage which could showcase their given
talents.
HONOURED MR. AJITH SIVAN ON HIS SELECTION TO THE KERALA
BLASTERS TEAM
The college community got together on 27 July 27 to congratulate Mr. Ajith Sivan, III
B.A Economics student of the college, on his selection to the Kerala Blasters team of ISL
Football. The footballer has made the entire college community proud. Sri. T.C. Mathew, the
Vice President of BCCI was the chief guest on the occasion.
WOMEN EMPOWERMENT LECTURE
Under the initiative of the college union and Centre for Women Empowerment, Dr. J.
Prameela Devi, Member, State Women’s Commission made a lecture on 11 July 2017 with a
view to overcome the gender barrier among girl students.
SAVE A FAMILY PROJECT
The college union, staff and students of the college undertook a project to ‘save a
family’. They collected among themselves, a sum of Rs.2,50,000 and donated to Smt. Shari
Madhu, the widow of an autorickshaw driver who was killed in an accident, to purchase land
for constructing house. The amount was handed over to Smt. Shari Madhu on 27-06-2018.
‘NIRMALA HASTHAM’
The students of the college launched a new programme by which they carry an
additional lunch box from their homes and donate one to the nearby orphanage. On an average,
80-100 lunch boxes are thus donated to the orphanage, daily.
NO OWN VEHICLE DAY
To spread the message of safe driving and environmental consciousness, the staff and
students of the college started a healthy practice to shed their own vehicles on the second
Tuesday of every month and travel by public transport. The mouse is well appreciated by the
media and the general public.
FOOD FEST – 30 NOVEMBER 2017
The ‘food fest’ was celebrated on 30 November 2017. The teachers and students
prepared their favorite food items and distributed among staff and students at market prices.
The programme was aimed at promoting the art of cooking and the spirit of entrepreneurship
among the students.
COLLEGE DAY CELEBRATIONS
College day celebrations of this year was conducted on 9th March 2018. Sri. Manikuttan
Murali, Chairman, College Union presided over the function. Sri. Vishnu Sukumaran, General
secretary presented the report of college union.
