discuss the future of Libya’s educational system. He participated in a five-day higher education dialogue,

“Expanding Opportunities for Libyan Higher Education,” hosted by the Hollings Center for International Dialogue

in Istanbul, Turkey. He was one of five scholars from U.S. institutions.

"I was honored to be invited to travel to Istanbul… to discuss the future of higher education in Libya. In the midst

of ongoing conflict, Libyan educators face daily obstacles that, working at an institution like Clemson, I found

truly humbling. The Hollings Center Dialogue brought together experts from across the U.S., the E.U., North

Africa and the Middle East to discuss how Libyans can work to address these obstacles and build a system of

higher education that can address the present and future needs of a new nation."

Global Urbanization: The Global Urban Ecosystem by the Planning, Development and Preservation

department's Jim Spencer (2014)

This innovative book sees contemporary urban settlement as the new human ecosystems

defining people's lives across the planet. Just as so-called natural ecosystems have defined

our view of the symbiosis between humans and their environments; James H. Spencer argues

that it is an urban ecosystem found across the planet that defines the twenty-first century.

Using the globally diverse cases of Ho Chi Minh City, Addis Ababa, Honolulu, and New York,

the book draws out the commonalities in how our intertwined built and social environments

express a shared humanity across continents and cultures.

Clemson's Architecture + Health program attracts global attention

"David Allison working with the international architecture firm, HKS (Dallas TX) on a subcontract award to design,

plan and develop a major trauma hospital in Doha, Qatar—the first of its kind in the region.

Professor Allison is involved with the UIA Public Health Group and just returned from a workshop in Florence

between representatives of the UIA PHG and the International Hospital Federation on the role of hospital design

on cost containment.

David is co-chairing the UIA PHG subgroup Global Universities Programs in Healthcare Architecture (GUPHA). This

group represents educators and practitioners from around the global who work in architecture and health

educational initiatives. It meets annually at UIA PHG meetings where schools and countries exchange what is

happening in architecture and health education. This year's meeting is in Durban, South Africa.

One of the Architecture + Health students - Chau Tran - won UIA PHG International Student Design Competition

in and receives his award and represents the program at the UIA Congress in Durban in August 2014. "

Gdansk Institute of Technology, Erfut University in Germany, and Silesian University of Technology, Silesia, and

area adjacent to central Gdansk. He also met with Dr. Peter Lorenz to discuss potential collaborations between

Clemson University and Gdansk Institute of Technology’s new Spatial Planning program. Dr. Lorenz will visit

Clemson in November to further develop this relationship.

Ottoman Ulema, Turkish Republic: Agents of Change and Guardians of Tradition by History's Amit

Bein (2011)

"To better understand the diverse inheritance of Islamic movements in present-

day Turkey, we must take a closer look at the religious establishment, the ulema,

during the first half of the twentieth century. During the closing years of the

Ottoman Empire and the early decades of the Republic of Turkey, the spread of

secularist and anti-religious ideas had a major impact on the views and political

leanings of the ulema.

Bein reveals how competing visions of development influenced debates about

reforms in religious education and the modernization of the medreses. He also

explores the reactions and changing attitudes of Islamic intellectuals to the

religious policies of the secular republic, and provides a better understanding of

the changes in the relationship between religion and state. Exposing division within

the religious establishment, this book illuminates the ulema's long-lasting legacies

still in evidence in Turkey today."

International Creative Inquiry

Exploring the Kanji World as Japanese Culture

"With the world's second largest economy and a focus on technological innovation, Japan is a country with its

eyes set on the future. Therefore, it is no surprise that Clemson students from all majors are investing their time

in studying the language of this island nation.

Yet there is one hurdle that has discouraged many students from furthering

their Japanese education. Kanji, the Japanese writing system adopted from

Chinese pictographs, is especially difficult to learn. One Creative Inquiry team

has found a way to cater to American students' way of learning and make

studying kanji more accessible. Associate professor Toshiko Kishimoto and her

Creative Inquiry team are working to create an application for Android phones

that will bridge the gap between U.S. college students and thousands of kanji

characters."
