Background ● The Cold War was a state of political and military tension after
World War II between powers in the United States and its NATO allies and the Soviet Union which had taken over territories formally taken over by the Nazis.
● It was called the Cold War because there was never any official combat.
● A large factor was the nuclear arms race.
● The nuclear arms race began the space race
● Both parties feared a surprise nuclear strike
● It ended in the dissolving of the Soviet Union
