Ascension Day
“Then [Jesus] led them out as far as Bethany, and, lifting up his hands, he blessed them.
While he was blessing the, he withdrew from them and was carried up into heaven”
Luke 24:50-51
There are some Church festival days that almost get lost in the life of a congregation.
Perhaps none more than the Ascension Day. The day falls exactly 40 days after the
Easter Resurrection, which means that this year the Ascension Day is on Thursday,
May 14. It is almost as if this time frame is to balance off the 40 days of Lent. The time
we use to prepare ourselves for Easter.
Both these times before and after the most important event in the Christian Church -
the Resurrection of Jesus on Easter - is a living reminder that our faith can never be
stagnant. Faith is not something that is focused on one day, or one event, or one ac-
tion. As important as Easter is, the period of Lent, and the time afterwards to the As-
cension, are living reminders to everyone that faith is not about what God has done
for us - but also what we do in response.
Our response to the events of Easter comes in two ways. In the period of Lent, we
take time to look at our own lives and prepare for the new life to come in the Resur-
rection. A power so great that it overcame death itself.
Many look at death as the end. But that is where the second response - the Ascension
Day - comes in. This day stands in the way of looking at our earthly death as the end. It
stands in the way of looking at faith as an historic event.
As we read in Luke’s Gospel, it was the resurrected, the living Jesus who led the disci-
ples to Bethany before he was taken up into heaven. The living Jesus is now sitting at
the right hand of the Father, as we confess in our Creed. It is a reminder to us all that
for faith to be part of our lives, it has to be a living faith. An every day faith that tells
us that Jesus walks with us in our every day in life.
Ascension Day is a reminder that it is the living Jesus who guides us through the val-
leys and rejoices with us on the mountaintops of life. With the living Jesus as part of
our every day of life, how can we do anything but live our life in faith? Live our life in
faith in the confidence that the living grace of God blesses our daily life as this same
grace blessed the disciples on the mountaintop of Bethany.

Update-Senior Pastor Call Process
The Call Committee continues meeting regularly. We have narrowed our list to a few final Pastors we interviewed. One of these candidates recently visited First English and our community. The com-mittee and the candidate were both very positive about the time spent together and feel that the Spirit may be drawing us to each other. We are prayerfully continuing forward with this candidate, with faith and hope that we are getting close. So far, the committee has:
Reviewed 40 candidate profiles
Considered 20 candidates for telephone or video conversations
Removed 8 candidates because they are in discussion with other congregations. Had telephone or video conversations with 9 candidates as a committee. Removed 4 candidates after initial discussions with them. Had one decline to be considered after video conversation. Had 3 video conversations with new candidates in March. Had one in-person visit/interview in April. Please pray with us for the Lord to guide us in our mission. We have confidence and faith than He will.

Life in our rapidly changing world can be difficult. We have a God who loves us unconditionally and wants the very best for us. Even when we forget about involving God in our everyday life, thinking we can handle it all on our own or maybe thinking we shouldn’t bother God with the “small stuff,” we have a God who won’t let go of us – ever! God is so much more than our human understanding can imagine and wants to be intimately involved in every aspect of our lives. The following is something I often share with our youth. I think it has value for all ages, how about you? Learning To Choose Well:
Slow down—don’t make important decisions in a rush.
Determine what’s really happening—attempt to describe the situation.
Find someone to talk to—seek out a friend, parent, teacher or pastor to help you identify possi-ble solutions. Seek support from your faith community.
List the options that are open to you. What are the benefits and risks? Who will it hurt? Help?
Think about each option—pray about it. Which feels best in your soul? Body? Mind? Which en-
gages your strength? Which makes you feel like life is draining from you?
Imagine what Jesus would do, think, say, feel if he was facing your decision.
Decide what you will do, but…
Take some time before you act on your decision. Keep in Mind: Each and every decision may not mean you have to go through every step—but paying attention to God—involving God in the process is a good habit—we have a God who is with us! Matthew 28:20b And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age. Luke 18:1 Then Jesus told them a parable about their need to pray always and not to lose heart.

The meeting was called to order by President, Marc Simone at 7:32 P.M. Pastor Veres offered the opening prayer. SECRETARY’S REPORT: Patty Foster moved, Mark Fett seconded, the report be accepted. Motion carried.
BOARD OF SOCIAL ACTION: Diann Ohman The MCREST representative who had been scheduled to speak to the Council this
evening concerning FEELC possibly housing the homeless, was recuperating from surgery and not able to attend this meeting. She will be rescheduled.
Diann Ohman and Penny Damore filled out and returned a Food Pantry survey sent from the Synod. The SAVE OUR CHIILDREN WALK in honor of Paige Walker & Christiana Samuel will be held on May 2 beginning at 11:00 A.M.
walking from Cadieux to Alter Rd. All are invited to attend. There will be a meeting for volunteers at Beaumont Hospital on Thurs. evening, Apr 23.
LSSM is asking for volunteers and/or donations to update the facilities of the Wayne County Family Center Servant project. LSSM will hold a “Service Event” July 13-18. See Diann Ohman or Penny Damore for more information.
An EVENING WITH LSSM will be held Apr. 30 at Zion Lutheran Church in Ann Arbor, beginning at 6:30 P.M. LSSM will sponsor a SUPER RUN/WALK TO SERVE FOSTER CHILDREN on May 2 at Wayne State Univ., Adams Field.
The 5K Run/Walk begins at 8:30 A.M. and the 1K Run/Walk begins at 10:00 A.M. See Diann Ohman for more details.

BOARD OF CHURCH PROPERTIES: Gordie Bush 1. Clean up day is May 9. Rain day is May 16. We need the congregation’s participation! 2. The lawn service contract has been awarded to Skurda Landscaping for $3040, for the season.
Peace Circle has ordered and is donating new carpeting for the Associate Pastor’s office. They will also be purchasing new flooring for the Bridal Lounge.
BOARD OF EVANGELISM: Patty Foster On May 19 blankets will be presented to the High School Seniors during a church service. Sue Vallone will be asked to change the service times in our ad in the Grosse Pointe News when needed.
BOARD OF PARISH EDUCATION: Chris Simone May 19 is the last day of Sunday School for the summer. Field Day activities will be held. Vacation Bible School will begin Aug. 3 from 9:00 A.M. – 12:00 PM.
BOARD OF FELLOWSHIP: Claudette Momenee 24 people have signed up for the trip to the DIA on Apr 24. On Mother’s Day (May 10) all women will receive a flower as they leave church. On Father’s Day (June 21) the annual Father’s Day BBQ will be held on the church lawn. The sign-up sheet for the Summer Coffee Hours is on the bulletin board in the hallway. Volunteers are needed.
BOARD OF YOUTH MINISTRY: Renata Conger Preparations are continuing for the upcoming National Youth Gathering in Detroit. St. James, St. Paul and First English youth have formed a group entitled Pointes Lutheran Youth Rally (PLYR) to prepare for the
Rally and for fellowship. The group will meet at St. Paul May 1, 6:30-10:00 P.M. Apr. 26 is Youth Sunday at FEELC. They will be conducting the services. They will also be sponsoring a “Drive-in” Lunch for the
congregation. May 8 – 6:00 to Midnight there will be a Middle School Late-night party at FEELC.

One baptism was held this month – Zerelda Conger, daughter of Renata and David Conger. Thursday morning Bible Studies continue with a new topic each week. Pastor continues to conduct services at Shorepointe from time to time. Pastor has written an article for the Grosse Pointe News. Pastor attended the Grosse Pointe Memorial Men’s Breakfast. Pastor is looking for a local engraver for the Columbarium plaques hoping the turn around time will be faster and less expensive,
OLD BUSINESS:
The summer services schedule will remain the same as the winter services. But a Thursday evening service will be held at 7:00 P.M. beginning May 21 and ending Sept. 3.
NEW BUSINESS: 1, The Summer Council meeting will be held on July 19 after the 11:00 service. The May and Sept. meetings will be held at normal times.
A “Baby in Office” proposal was presented and discussed. Patty Foster moved, Mark Fett seconded, the proposal be accepted. Motion carried. The proposal was as follows: The duration of the agreement is to last until the baby is six-months or crawling, whichever comes first. The parent must take every precaution to ensure the safety of the baby during office hours. The parent must make provisions to ensure that work is being completed in spite of the added distraction of a child. The parent must make every attempt to minimize disruption to other staff and members of the congregation during office
hours. The baby must not accompany the parent during
scheduled meetings with Church members, staff, youth, etc. Marc Simone gave an update on the progress of the Call
Committee. The Committee has had an in person interview with a candidate and will be proceeding with further interviews with him. There is still much work to be done. The committee is asking for the prayers of the congregation and the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

The AbiBow Recycling, LLC program is designed for organizations to recycle
paper -- most of all, it’s an opportunity for us to recycle and help the

Save our Children's Future walk (families of Paige Stalker and Christiana Samuel). It is going to be held on May 2, 2015 - starting at 11:00am, walking on Mack Ave. from Cadieux to Alter Rd. There will be transportation along the route for those who find they can't complete the walk; St. Clare Montefalco, and Spirit of Love (across from Harry's Restaurant) and of course Higher Grounds Coffee Café...will be stops for bathrooms or breaks. Hopefully, one or two people from each church to "rally the troops" from their perspective church will walk, especially your youth/young people.

WOMEN’S CIRCLE BIBLE STUDY
The topics of our Women’s Circle Bible studies for this winter into spring offer a variety of subjects. Hope Circle continues in the study from “Gather” magazine, “Transforming Life and Faith.” This study looks at the transforming power of Jesus, in the transformation stories of Paul, Moses, Lydia, Philip and the Ethiopian, plus
more. Hope Circle does not meet during Lent. The focus for the next meeting May 6th will be the story of the suffering and endurance of Job. Peace Circle continues in their study of the book “Bad Girls of the Bible” by Liz Curtis Higgs. All women of First English are encour-aged to participate in the learning, service and
fellowship of one our various Circles.

9:30a.m. ADULT SUNDAY SCHOOL On October 31, 1517 Martin Luther nailed his “95 Theses” to the church door of the Castle Church in Wittenberg Germany. Historians have assigned this event as the beginning of the Protestant Reformation. Thus in 2017 we will celebrate the 500 Anniversary of the Reformation. Our Presiding Bishop, Elizabeth Eaton, has suggested that, as we look forward to that celebration, we study Luther’s Small Catechism. She points out that “it could be argued that no other experience is more universally Lutheran than studying Luther’s Small Catechism.”
So, our Adult Sunday School Class for this fall will be an overview of Luther’s Small Catechism. Not only will this give us an opportunity to celebrate our Lutheran Heritage, but Luther’s Catechism is also an excellent review of the basics of the Christian Faith!
We have a nice size group on Sunday mornings, but we would love to have YOU join us as well. Our sessions meet during the Sunday School Hour, 9:30 - 10:30 a.m. in the Lounge.

Summer Coffee Hour sign-up sheet - is now located on the bulletin board in hallway. We really need your participation in hosting a coffee hour. Regular and decaf coffee packets to make the coffee are supplied by the church, it is up to you if you want to serve anything else, you are welcome to set out a free will offering plate to cover any costs. May 10 - Mother's day, we would like to honor all women of the church by giving them a flower with an inspirational verse. This is our way of saying 'Thank you' for all you do for family, friends and church. We will distribute them after the services as you exit the sanctuary. Enjoy the day! June 21 - Father's day, we will again have a BBQ to honor all the men of the church. This will be held on the church lawn or in Luther Center if weather is bad. We will supply food, some children's activities, games, and a 50/50 raffle. Look for more information in next month's Clef and the bulletin board in hallway. Mark your calendars to do something different, attend a Thursday Night service then after join in an evening of games for children and adults, and some snacks. We are planning on August 20. COLUMBARIUM FOR FIRST ENGLISH
The Columbarium has been completed and its dedication date will be May 10, 2015. We are in the process of contacting those that have purchased niches for placement selection.
The price of the niches are $1,800.00. The Niches will hold two urns and will be assigned on a “first come-first-served” basis, with members being able to choose the location of their niche within the Columbarium. If you are interested in purchasing a companion niche, please contact the church office.
We are looking at doing a new church photo directory and hoping for some volunteers to help coordinate its creation. If you are interested in helping in any way or having input on format, please contact Randie Kohler at (734) 546-0900 or [email protected]

BOARD OF SOCIAL ACTION Pantry You’ve heard the expression “back to basics.” This time we’re talking food. Each month we’ll ask members to donate another “basic” to restock our pantry. May is everything month. Please consider buying one or two items for our shelves. Obviously if you find a great deal for pantry basics, bring ‘em in. There’s always room for more! Have you noticed the “Reflection Garden” located on the east side of the church? This area has been transformed into a quiet, peaceful green space for sitting and reflecting. A donation of $50.00 or above, will give you the opportunity to have an appropriate message engraved on one of the paver bricks. Order forms can be found in the magazine rack in the Gathering Area.

PLYR Gathering Rally Come join fellow Lutheran youth in our community for a Pointe Lutheran Youth Rallies (PLYR) event! On Friday, May 1 from 6:30-10:30pm, all middle and high schoolers are invited to St. Paul in the Farms for FREE evening of pizza, band performance by “Captive Free,” games, and more! This rally will focus on the 2015 National Gathering in order to get us all hyped for the event. Please speak with Renata or Pastor Chris for more info.
Middle School Late-night Party The confirmation class has worked very hard this year and have earned a well-deserved evening of shenanigans. All middle schoolers with at least 50 points are invited to a special event on Friday, May 8th from 6:00pm-midnight for food and games. Great work you guys!

We are excited to announce the 2015 VBS theme—”Camp Discovery!” Campers of all ages learn that God gives them the wisdom and the courage to step out in faith as Jesus works through them—whether they’re at school, playing with
friends, or helping out at home. Get excited for a camping adventure that makes a lasting impact on kids as they sing songs around the campfire, act out Bible stories, make crafts, and eat tasty treats. It’s all happening during the morning hours of August 3-7 for children entering Preschool through 6th Grade this fall! Current middle schoolers, high schoolers, and adult volunteers are needed! Children’s Offerings for LWR Our children have offered up over $140 so far this year, which is enough to donate a goat and chickens. For farmers in the Philippines, a hen and chicks means eggs to eat, eggs to sell and chicks to grow a flock. Empower them and give the gift that keeps on giving: independ-ence, sustainability and success. Please keep the dona-tions coming and check out the progress thermometer, across from the office, to learn more.
Field Day The Sunday School academic year is coming to a close on May 17th. To celebrate anther great year of learn-ing, this last day will consist of games and fun activities. We hope to see all of your
children there and please make sure to thank the teachers and volunteers; it wouldn’t happen without them! Please leave your fancy clothes at home—grass stains possible!

May is a busy month is preschool as we wrap up our letter of the week activities for the year with the letter M. We’ll make a special project for Mother’s Day and read about the funny antics of the Five Little Monkeys. The remainder of May is devoted to letter/number review,
rereading our favorite stories from the children’s Bible, learning some classic children’s stories such as the Three Bears and the Three Little Pigs and preparing for our end of the year program. During the program we share songs with parents & grandparents and announce our paper plate awards.
First English Lutheran Preschool is accepting new students for the 2015/16 school year. Our preschool offers a
caring, Christian setting to help parents prepare their three or four year old for their kindergarten and
elementary years. Students will develop their social & intellectual abilities as well as a positive self-image.
