Earthquakes
An earthquake occurs when the crust of the earth trembles or shakes. Where
the earth's tectonic plates collide, huge amounts of energy push rock againstrock. In some places the plates slide over each other little by little, but in other
places they get stuck.
For years, and even decades, the pressures pushing the plates buildup. Then
quite suddenly, the pent-up energy is released. The plates slip over each other
sending shock waves of energy in all directions. When these waves reach the
surface, they are felt as earthquakes.
The force of an earthquake is measured on the Richter scale. Every point on the
scale is a 10-fold increase on the point below. The Mercalli scale can also be
used to measure earthquakes but rather than force it measures the effects. The
force of an earthquake is recorded on a seismometer.

CURRICULUM VITAE
Your Curriculum Vitae is a means of telling other people about your personal details and
experience. Your Curriculum Vitae should be easy to read and concise and should include
actual facts and figures. A CV should provide the reader with a clear picture of youraccomplishments and experiences as well as your potential capabilities.
Produce an initial draft and then ask another person to read through and tell you if they feel it
is appropriate. Then make any necessary amendments.
The length of your CV should not normally be more than two sides of A4. The layout is very
important and the various sections should be well spaced with ample margins.
The content of your CV will depend upon the position you are applying for, but possible
headings would include - personal details, education and qualifications, work experience and
other skills/hobbies.

Listening Council
Walsall Council is consulting people across the Borough on how it makes decisions and how
local people can be involved in that decision-making. Similar consultations are taking place in
Councils across the country to determine the future shape of local government. We have
commenced formal consultations on the options. This leaflet sets out some key points, as partof that consultation.
Last year Parliament passed a law which means that all Councils up and down the country
have to change the way they work and how they take decisions. Councils have to modernise,
to find new ways of working which put people and communities first. The idea is to give
Councils clearer leadership moving on from the traditional committee system, which the
Government feels often, causes delays and confusion.2.5

SMELLS, TASTE AND COLOUR
Smells, taste and colour can bring back thoughts of hot summer days, firework nights
and cold winter evenings. Sometimes passing someone in the street can leave a scent of
perfume or aftershave, which reminds you of that special person. Of course, it could bea smell, which reminds you of school dinners, or the taste of school custard, not so
pleasant!
When you are getting ready to go out for that all important date and you put on that
new jumper, the colour might look wrong. Out comes that old faithful shirt and the
colour is now right for your mood.
The taste of sweets or Grannys homemade soup can take you back to thoughts
completely forgotten. Childhood memories can be brought back instantly by taste. It
could also be the festive cake that reminds you of family parties or rich chocolate that
someone special gave you on your birthday.

COUNTERFEIT NOTES - BEWARE!
If you have a note which you believe is a counterfeit you must take it to the police at once. It
is a criminal offence to hold, or to pass, a note which you know to be a counterfeit.
You can distinguish between the different denominations by size. For example, the 10 noteis larger than the 5 note. Each banknote has a portrait of a different person on the back. In
addition, each banknote has a different symbol on the front to aid the partially sighted.
Notes that are in a reasonable condition should be crisp. Raised printing, used for some
features, feels rough to the touch. This effect is most obvious in the words 'Bank of England'
at the top.
The watermark should be hardly apparent. When the banknote is held up to the light, a
clearly defined portrait of the Queen is visible. Lines should be sharp and colours should be
clear. Every genuine banknote has a metallic thread embedded in the paper. When held up to
the light, the thread appears as a bold continuous line.

Guinea Pigs - Cavies
For many people guinea pigs are the perfect pets. They are small friendly animals that rarely
bite and are easy to keep healthy. Guinea pigs are rodents and are not from Guinea so the
name is a little misleading. They actually originate from Peru.
Guinea pigs are herbivores. They need to be given fresh vegetables every day since they
cannot make their own vitamin C. Their teeth grow all the time so they need to be given food,
which they need to grind so that their teeth do not get too long. Dry food is available which
has been enriched with vitamin C. Guinea pigs are enthusiastic about their food and will tell
you when they are hungry.
Guinea pigs can be kept indoors or outdoors. If they are in an outside hutch they need to be
secured against both the cold and the local cats. A frosty night can leave pigs very distressed
while they have few defences against cats. Indoor animals need the opportunity to exercise in
the open air in a run or other secure enclosure. All guinea pigs love eating grass.

HOLIDAYS IN THE SUN
A vacation - or 'annual leave' as some might call it - is time to relax and enjoy the
sunshine, sand and sea. Some people go away skiing and combine sunshine with snow-
capped mountains. Whatever the choice of holiday, the essential thing is to enjoy
ourselves. The warmth of the sun on our faces and the gentle breeze from the sea fillsus with joy while we relax.
Going away makes some of us buy new clothes for the holiday. We save our money
only to spend it all in the short space of two or three weeks.
Part of the fun is to stay up late, sleep all morning and sunbathe or ski all afternoon. We
then return home tired and delight in telling everybody what a great time we had. When
the holiday is long gone, we still have our photographs and souvenirs to remind us of
the fun we had.

COMPANY IMAGE
Picture a small family engineering firm making specialised machinery. At the last Board
Meeting they decided that it was time they moved into the 20 th Century and acquired a
facsimile machine.
When a salesman came to the firm and gave them a demonstration, they decided that they
must buy one. If a service engineer finds that she needs a drawing to carry out a repair at a
customer's premises, it can be sent immediately.
When the machine was installed, they had their facsimile number printed on all their
stationery.
One day a customer telephoned the Sales Office, urgently requiring some tooling for a lathe.
They decided to send the details by facsimile. The Sales Manager was extremely embarrassed
when he was told that their attempt at sending this facsimile had failed because the man who
had answered said that he did not know how to work the machine.

CHOOSING A COLOUR SCHEME
First, here are a few words of advice you may wish to consider about colour schemes.
Before choosing the colour of the paper for the walls, consider the layout and aspect of
the room very carefully.
For example, if the room faces north, use a shade that will introduce a sunny
atmosphere such as pink. If the room faces south, however, use quieter colours such as
pale green, pale blue or grey.
Psychologically, colour has a marked effect on most people; different shades having
different influences according to the individual.
Through the medium of colour, you can effectively express your personality, and it is
wise to choose the colours that please you, always provided that they will harmonise
with the general scheme of decoration.
If the idea appeals to you, more than one shade can be used for decorating walls.
Remember, however, that as a general rule, pastel shades make a more pleasing contrast
than stronger colours. When you are mixing and matching tones, aim at expressing
your individuality.
