City Manager’s Update
The Virginia Beach Sheriff’s Office held its 38th
Basic
Academy graduation ceremony on Thursday, Aug. 11,
recognizing nine deputies who successfully completed 16
weeks of training and met the Department of Criminal Justice
Services’ requirements for graduation. I had the honor of
speaking to the graduates, thanking them for answering “the
call” to
help keep
the City safe by joining one of the noblest
and most demanding professions there is.
Law enforcement in Virginia Beach is
highly respected and critically important to
the exceptional quality of life we have
established. The citizens and leadership of
this City have complete confidence in these
nine men and women, their training and the
leadership of the VBSO. The deputies will
be assigned to the Virginia Beach
Correctional Center and bring the number of
active, sworn Virginia Beach Sheriff’s
Office deputies to 422.

Naloxone, a prescription medication. This will be the fourth REVIVE! training course conducted
by the department. Space is limited to 20 individuals and registration is mandatory. Contact:

managing the areas affected by severe flooding from recent storms. For seven days, District
Chief James Ramsey, Battalion Chiefs Bill Skelaney and Steve Lesinski, who are also
members of the Hampton Roads Incident Management Team, assisted with managing search
and rescue operations, assessing damage for cost recovery, and coordinating safety measures
within the historic district of Ellicott City so volunteers, shop owners, occupants and contractors
could begin restoration efforts.

Dear Mayor Sessoms and Council,

FAX (757) 427-5037
The Virginia Beach Sheriff's Office and I had the pleasure of having City Manager Dave Hansen
as the commencement speaker for our 38th Basic Academy graduation yesterday, Thursday,
Aug. 11, 2016. Mr. Hansen delivered an inspiring and heartfelt message that was, in short, one
of the best we've had in recent times. Not only did he assure my deputies and me that we have
the full support of our City Manager, he also reinforced the value he places in our work to every
deputy, civilian, friend and family member in the audience. That kind of reinforcement is
invaluable, especially at a time when law enforcement now more than ever needs to know that
we have our leaders' support.
Since his first day in office, Mr. Hansen has been a friend to the Sheriff's Office. I cannot
imagine anyone better to fill the job of Virginia Beach City Manager and to continue to do what
is necessary to ensure we remain the safest city of our size.
I for one am glad to have a friend in that office and I hope he will continue to receive your
support.
Sincerely,
Ken Stolle
