“With blessed Joseph, her Spouse”

Have you noticed some Priests now add the words “With blessed Joseph, her Spouse” to the Eucharistic Prayer after mentioning Mary? The reason why is found in a quote from a Vatican decree signed on May 1, 2013, the Feast of Saint Joseph the Worker:

“The faithful in the Catholic Church have shown continuous devotion to Saint Joseph and have solemnly and constantly honored his memory as the most chaste spouse of the Mother of God and as the heavenly Patron of the universal Church. For this reason Blessed Pope John XXIII … decreed that Saint Joseph’s name be added to the ancient Roman Canon. [Eucharistic Prayer I] In response to petitions [to add Saint Joseph’s name to

ALL Eucharistic Prayers] received from places throughout the world, the Supreme Pontiff Benedict XVI deemed them worthy of implementation and graciously approved them. The Supreme Pontiff Francis likewise has recently confirmed them. In this the pontiffs had before their eyes the full communion of the Saints who, once pilgrims in this world, now lead us to Christ and unite us with him.”

This decree was announced on June 19, 2013 and permission was granted for Priests to make the change immediately. As always, a review of history helps to understand the significance and purpose of such liturgical changes.

The exact words of the Eucharistic Prayer, the Church’s greatest prayer, during which the consecration takes place, are meticulously chosen and carefully governed. No Priest is permitted to alter them in the least. One of the earliest records we have of this prayer [outside of the Bible, which gives us the words of Institution “This is my Body; this is my Blood”] comes from Saint Justin, who was martyred in 165: “… bread and wine and water are brought forward. The president offers prayers and gives thanks to the best of his ability, and the people give assent by saying, ‘Amen.’” [Little has changed after 1,808 years!]

In the 400’s the martyr Hippolytus wrote an outline of what was required for a valid Eucharistic Prayer. [Our present-day Eucharistic Prayer II is a close translation of this ancient

prayer.] This discouraged the Priest [or president as

Saint Justin called him] from composing his own Eucharistic Prayer. Pope Gregory I (590-604) formally ended the freelance style by promulgating a ‘Missal’ for mandatory use. However, Priests continued to take liberties with the prayers, which led to erroneous and even heretical statements! So the Council of Trent (1545–63) set firmer rubrics for the Mass, and in 1570 Pope Pius V [1566-72] forbid ANY changes to the Roman Canon [meaning standard or norm] which we now call Eucharistic Prayer I.

So it was quite radical when on November 13, 1962 Blessed Pope John XXIII added Saint Joseph’s name to the Roman Canon: it was the first change to that venerable, ancient prayer in 392 years! At that time the Roman Canon was the only Eucharistic Prayer in the Latin Rite, so this latest change simply brings the other three main Eucharistic Prayers in line with the Roman Canon. So who gets the credit for this change?

Our two Holy Fathers [who ever thought we’d see

two Popes alive at once?] both have spiritual bonds to Saint Joseph. Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI’s baptismal name is Joseph [Ratzinger.] Pope Francis chose March 19, the Solemnity of Saint Joseph, Spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary, as the date for his inaugural Mass; he even has a spikenard or flower, which is a Hispanic-based customary symbol of Saint Joseph, on his coat-of-arms. However, adding Saint Joseph to the Eucharistic Prayers is not just a ‘papal perk’ for two popes with a devotion to this great Saint!

In a world where the Church and her teachings are under constant attack, we must implore the intercession of the Universal Protector of the Church; as he protected Jesus while He was in the flesh, Joseph now protects Christ present in His new Body, the Church! In a sex-crazed world we need the Protector of Virgins to safeguard our chastity. With marriage being redefined, we need the help of the Spouse of our Blessed Mother; with so many parents raising those who are not their biological children, we need the help of the Foster-father of Jesus! [Google ‘Litany of Saint Joseph’ to see more titles under which he can intercede for us!

With God’s love and my prayers,

Reverend Michael J. Kreder

THIRTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

First Reading: 1 Kings 19:16b, 19-21

Elijah the prophet followed God's instruction to appoint a man

named Elisha as his successor. Elijah threw his cloak over Elisha,

who went and said good-bye to his family, then followed Elijah

without question.

Second Reading: Galatians 5:1, 13-18

Paul reminds us that people were freed from the old law through

Christ. But he makes it clear that this freedom does not mean giving

in to evil desires. Instead, we must be guided by the Spirit and most

importantly love our neighbor as ourselves.

Gospel: Luke 9:51-62

Jesus set out for Jerusalem, and passed through a town where he

was not welcomed. He reprimanded his disciples for desiring

vengeance against the town. One man wanted to follow Jesus when

he had finished his duties at home. Jesus expressed that a man who

begins a task, but constantly looks back is unfit for the reign of

God.

KEEP CHRIST IN YOUR VACATION

During the summer months let us remember to keep the Lord in our

lives. The opportunity to witness His message through Scripture

and to be strengthened by the Eucharist is a necessity in our

relationship with God and with each other. As you travel on

vacation, take time to visit and worship the Lord in a nearby

Church. For those remaining at home in your parish, and to all

visitors, the invitation for continued worship at Saint Mary Church

is extended and will certainly serve to enrich your summer.

REMEMBER YOUR PARISH

Some people wait until the end of summer to put in a ‘catch-

up’ envelope for the Sundays they might have been away. The

“W ay of Stewardship” is NOT to ‘catch up’ after

everything has been used for vacation but to give from the

“first fruits.” Why not consider “catching up” before you

leave for vacation as an act of gratitude to God for all you

have been given .

Sunday in Ordinary Time

Orations ‘A’ for Independence

Day Mass: July 4

In this ‘Year of Faith’ I’m

reflecting on the revised

Roman Missal

orations that were not on a Sunday last year. May

our reflections on these theologically rich, deep, beautiful Mass orations help us grow in FAITH!

Unlike most other reflections, which were gleaned

from the book Essential Presidential Prayers and Texts, these are totally my own creation! This week I offer the first of two sets of orations for our Nation.

Independence Day - A - Collect

God of justice, Father of truth, who guide creation in wisdom and goodness

to fulfillment in Christ your Son, open our hearts to the truth of his Gospel,

that your peace may rule in our hearts and your justice guide our lives.

The Gospel Truth. Religion has done great things for our planet, but we cannot deny the fact that some have misunderstood or intentionally misused their faith to wreak havoc! Some Protestants who came to this land to escape religious persecution in Europe forbid

Catholics to practice their faith or hold public office! Every faith has had its share of those who use violence and unjust means to impose its values; these days radical Islam is notorious for this travesty! This Collect poetically states in just five words all that is necessary for ‘God and country’ to coexist: everything we do must be firmly rooted in and based on: ‘justice, ‘truth,’ ‘wisdom,’ ‘goodness’ and ‘peace.’

Jesus must be our role model in using these ideals and values to deal with our imperfect and pluralistic country. By saying “repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God” [Mark 12:17] Jesus upheld the right of legitimate civil authorities to set laws, govern and levy taxes, but He also reminded us that all of us ultimately belong to God, who will judge us on how we used the power and positions which He, the author of all authority, entrusted to us. How will you be judged?

Independence Day - A - Prayer over the Offerings

Accept, Lord God, these gifts we bring to this altar and, having taught us through the wisdom of the Gospel,

lead us to true justice and lasting peace.

The Wisdom of the Gospel. One of the two Prefaces for national holidays summarizes Christ’s mission - and our attempt to promote it with an ‘American-flare’ - in these words:

“[Jesus] spoke to us a message of peace and taught us to live as brothers and sisters. His message took form in the vision of our

founding fathers as they fashioned a nation where we might live as one.

His message lives on in our midst as our task for today and a promise for tomorrow.”

As the Lord Jesus ministered to both faithful and sinful Jews, to pagan Romans and Greeks who worshipped their many gods and goddesses, to men, women and children o every economic, political, social and national persuasion and situation, we must do the same, in His name, as He commanded of us! Not that it’s a free-for-all or that we cannot and should not have distinctions over who can validly receive Eucharist, serve as godparents or sponsors and ministers, etc. It is still our task to bring all peoples into His Church, so that they can share with us the divine gifts we so often take for granted!

Independence Day - A - Prayer after Communion

By showing us in this Eucharist, O Lord, a glimpse of the unity and joy of your people in heaven,

deepen our unity and intensify our joy, that all who believe in you may work together

to build the city of lasting peace.

United We Stand; Divided We Fall. We may not always agree on how to blend faith and religion into our non-theocratic country, but if we do not have a divine source of morals and ethics, peace and justice upon which we base our laws, the USA is doomed to fail and to fall - as did the many nations before us that rejected God! For human history clearly warns us: if God is not the sole source of our blessings, and divinely revealed truths are not our goal, and we do not protect the unique, God-given human dignity of each person, born or unborn, of every race and language, way of life and mindset, we will implode upon ourselves. So we rightly end the Universal Prayer with “God Bless America” - for without God we cannot survive or succeed!

With God’s love and my prayers,

Reverend Michael J. Kreder
