Pie Social with a Used Book and Record Sale We have decided to add a new dimension to our Annual Pie Social fundraiser, by combining it with a used books and records sale. So if you have any old books, records or CDs that you are looking to clean out of your attic or basement; please donate them to the CHS. We will make good use of them. On the day of our Pie So-cial we will also have the used books and records for sale in the Log Cabin. This fundraiser is scheduled for Sunday October 10. Please contact Cindy at 262-593-8099 if you would like to donate some books, records or CDs for our sale.

Then and Now Exhibit The CHS has on display an exhibit called “Then and Now” that features aerial photos of the Town of Con-cord. The exhibit shows the changes over time using aerial and ground-‐based photography in locations throughout the Town of Concord. There were ma-‐jor changes in the transportation system, which af-‐fected businesses along those routes. Road surfaces and alignments needed to change as car and trucks traveled faster. Highway grades and curves were engineered to improve safety and shorten travel time.
Land use also changed with the times as shorter travel times allowed people to move farther from their jobs and move to the country. More houses sprung up on the landscape; efficient farming equipment allowed fields to grow in size with the removal of fence lines. Cattle that was pastured kept new trees and shrubs from growing. Without the cattle, there were more trees and denser woodlands.
Then and Now exhibit now on view at the Concord Historical Museum.
Many thanks to the First Bank Financial Center for their donation of $250 to the exhibit. Also many thanks to Dan Moldenhauer and ARC Document Solutions for the printing contribu-‐tion to the exhibit. Additional thanks to CHS members Jerry Thomasen, and Barb Seamandel for their help with the development of the exhibit.

Curator’s Corner - by Renee Baneck Tantala
Renee Baneck Tantala (left) speaking with Ann Koski as they review some of the society’s collection of artifacts
In March we received excellent advice from Ann Koski, re-‐tired director of the Wisconsin Historical Society Museum in Madison, who visited our museum to review our collection. We are so thankful for all the time she spent with us. We talked with Ann about the need to protect items on display from the light coming in from our large windows. After we showed her one of our very special artifacts, the Spencer sam-‐pler, she suggested that we look into having it professionally conserved. Elizabeth Spence was seven years old when she made this sampler in England in 1837. Elizabeth brought it with her in 1847 when she came to America with her parents Richard and Elizabeth Spence.
Over the past year Cindy Arbiture and Dale Konle have digitized most of the photographs in our collection. Thanks so much for the many hours you spent sort-‐ing and scanning! This makes it much easier to select photos for our website and as part of future exhibits (especially "Por-‐trait of a Town," which is being planned for 2015).
If you have artifacts that you wish to do-‐nate, please contact me or another board member. We are interested in recording any information you have about our arti-‐facts and, of course, any family lore that will help us tell the history of the Town of Concord. We greatly value the generosity of all our donors and volunteers.
Elizabeth Spence needlepoint, that was made by her when she was only 7
years old. It is dated 1837.
This year our focus is on "collections management." While that doesn’t sound exciting, it has inspired me to catch up with accessioning and cataloguing and to begin rearranging objects in cabinets and on shelves.

Members of the Concord Historical Society who passed in 2013 are Ronald Ingerrsoll and Orabelle (Ingersoll) Jaeger, they were brother and sister. Ron had been a charter member of our Society. I still remember the first meeting that he attended with his son Tom Ingersoll. They both had very little to say during that first meeting, but by the time the meeting was over and they learned of our mission to preserve history for our town, they both joined the Society. Tom would later become our Vice President. Ron and his wife Bobbie were always supportive to the Society over the years. We miss Ron and extend our sincere sympathy to Bobbie and all the Ingersoll family.
Orabelle is also missed by her friends at the CHS. She had many wonderful memories that she would share of her school days at Concord Center One-‐Room Schoolhouse, which is currently our Concord Historical Museum. She was always very helpful with our fundraisers, and she did much to help our Society. Our sincere sympathy to Orabelle’s family. She is missed.
