Recognized as one of America’s leading orchestras, the Grand Rapids Symphony celebrates its 86th anniversary in 2015-16, a tribute to an enduring partnership between the orchestra and the community that has embraced it since 1930. The Grand Rapids Symphony presents more than 400 performances each year, touching the lives of some 200,000, nearly half of whom are students, senior citizens and people with disabilities, reached through extensive education and community service programs. Concert series, including the Richard and Helen DeVos Classical, the Crowe Horwath Great Eras, the Porter Hills Coffee Classics, and the Sacred Dimensions series, are presented to enrich and enlighten audiences with great masterworks as well as with the music of our time. Meanwhile, the Fox Motors Pops, Nestlé Gerber SymphonicBoom, PNC Lollipops, DTE Energy Foundation Family, and the D&W Fresh Market Picnic Pops series are offered to entertain children and adults alike. The all-volunteer, 140-voice Grand Rapids Symphony Chorus, now in its 54th season, joins the orchestra for several classical and pops concerts each season. Under the leadership of Music Advisor Larry Rachleff, Principal Pops Conductor Bob Bernhardt, Associate Conductor John Varineau, and Music Director Laureate David Lockington, the GRS continues its search for a new Music Director, bringing eight renowned guest conductors to town in 2015-16. The orchestra’s 12th recording, featuring works by British composer Philip Sawyers, was released internationally on the Nimbus Alliance label in 2011. Other milestones include a critically acclaimed debut in 2005 in New York City’s Carnegie Hall, and a 2007 Grammy nomination for Best Classical Crossover Album for “Invention & Alchemy,” a recording and DVD featuring “Hip Harpist” Deborah Henson-Conant. The Grand Rapids Symphony in 2015-16 holds its 15th annual “Symphony with Soul” concert, featuring the GRS Community Chorus, connecting cultures through the shared language of music. Proceeds support the Mosaic Scholarship Fund, launched in 2005 with a grant from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. Awarded to Latino and African-American students, scholarships provide music lessons and mentorship by GRS’ musicians. Since 2013, the GRS has reached audiences through MySymphony360, a membership program for diverse, young professionals who share a love of music and enjoy a night out on the town. The Grand Rapids Symphony has a long history of commitment to education and music participation. This season marks the 55th anniversary of the Grand Rapids Youth Symphony and Classical Orchestra, presented by Meijer, Inc. In 2008, the organization created the Grand Rapids Symphony Youth Choruses, presented by Legacy Trust. For more than 25 years, GRS music ensembles have performed in schools across West Michigan. Its Artist-In-Residence program, which partners with 41 schools in 15 counties, reaches more than 17,000 students in Kindergarten through sixth-grade. Since 1944, four generations of concert goers have grown up attending Fifth-Grade Concerts, which provide a live, concert experience for more than 15,000 youngsters each year. The orchestra sponsors the Grand Rapids Bach Festival, a biennial, community-wide event that brings music into coffee houses and brew pubs as well as into the concert hall. Each year, the GRS serves as the orchestra for live performances by Opera Grand Rapids and Grand Rapids Ballet. At home, tune in and hear your Grand Rapids Symphony throughout West Michigan on NPR affiliate Blue Lake Public Radio.

GRAND RAPIDS SYMPHONY CHORUS
PEARL SHANGKUANCOVENANT CHAIR
The Grand Rapids Symphony Chorus was organized and founded in 1962 with the guidance and support of Mary Ann Keeler. Today, it is a volunteer organization of 125 members dedicated to achieving excellence in choral presentations. Under the direction of Dr. Pearl Shangkuan since 2004, the chorus has reached an admirable level of artistic choral performance. The chorus performs major works with the orchestra during the Richard and Helen DeVos Classical Series and Fox Motors Pops Series concerts. The chorus actively seeks new members who are experienced singers and have music reading ability. New singers may join the chorus throughout the season by private audition, which can be arranged by emailing Erika Spykman at [email protected]. If you enjoy singing and want to be part of an excellent musical ensemble, join us. It’s even more thrilling from the stage!
In her twelfth season as the chorus director of the Grand Rapids Symphony Chorus, Dr. Pearl Shangkuan is a sought-after guest conductor and clinician all across the United States and internationally. Recent engagements include making her conducting debut at Carnegie Hall, lecturing at several international conferences, and serving as a judge in an international choral competition. The Director of Choral Activities and professor of Music at Calvin College, her choirs have appeared at the American Choral Directors Association conventions and have toured Asia and Europe. Dr. Shangkuan has a signature choral series with Earthsongs publishing and also is the music editor of the Calvin Institute of Christian Worship music series, published by GIA. Studying under pre-eminent American choral conductor and chorus master of the New York Philharmonic, Dr. Joseph Flummerfelt, Dr. Shangkuan received her bachelor of music in church music (summa cum laude) and master of music in choral conducting (with distinction) from Westminster Choir College in Princeton, New Jersey; and her doctorate in choral conducting from Rutgers University. Dr. Shangkuan and her family live in Grand Rapids.

SEAN IVORYVERDUIN CHARITABLE FOUNDATION CHAIR
The Grand Rapids Symphony Youth Choruses became an affiliate of the Grand Rapids Symphony in May of 2008. Three choirs form a graded choral program that exists to maintain a tradition of choral excellence for young people in West Michigan. Youth Chorus members receive extensive training as well as opportunities to join the Grand Rapids Symphony in performances of major works from the choral and symphonic traditions. Two training choirs, the Prelude Chorus and Junior Youth Chorus, are directed by Jackie Sonderfan Schoon. The senior ensemble, directed by Sean Ivory, aspires to professional musical standards and is known simply as the Youth Chorus. During the 2014-15 season the Youth Chorus was featured in the Richard and Helen DeVos Classical series concert Love and Life, in the annual Holiday Pops concert, and was part of a world premiere of Ivory’s I Will Rise at LiveArts in April 2015.
Sean Ivory is a choral conductor, pianist and composer living in Grand Rapids. He is the director of the Grand Rapids Symphony Youth Chorus and its select treble ensemble, Mandala. Since 1992, Mr. Ivory has been the vocal music instructor at Forest Hills Central High School. He has held positions at St. Cecilia Music Center, the North American Choral Company, and Calvin College. Mr. Ivory was recently appointed director of the Calvin College Oratorio Society. Mr. Ivory attended Northwestern University, Calvin College and Michigan State University. His choirs have performed at both state and regional conventions for the American Choral Directors Association and have toured Ireland, the Netherlands, Finland, Estonia, Ghana and the Czech Republic. Several of his works (many of which are collaborations with Chicago composer Paul Caldwell) are published by Earthsongs, Alliance Music, Hal Leonard and GIA Music. In 2014, Paul and Sean conducted a concert of their music at Carnegie Hall in New York City.

Song of the Universal – Ola Gjeilo
Come, said the Muse,Sing me a song no poet yet has chanted,Sing me the Universal. In this broad Earth of ours,Amid the measureless grossness and the slag,Enclosed and safe within its central heart,Nestles the seed Perfection.By every life a share, or more or less,None born but it is born—conceal’d or
unconceal’d, the seed is waiting. Give me, O God, to sing that thought!Give me—give him or her I love, this
quenchless faithIn Thy ensemble. Whatever else withheld,
withhold not from us,Belief in plan of Thee enclosed in Time and
Space;Health, peace, salvation universal. All, all for Immortality!Love, like the light, silently wrapping all!Nature’s amelioration blessing all!The blossoms, fruits of ages—orchards divine
and certain;Forms, objects, growths, humanities, to
spiritual Images ripening. – Walt Whitman
