Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) value chain starts from exploration and production (including processing), from
where natural gas is supplied to liquefaction plant, and then loaded into LNG tanker to be supplied to various
destinations. Post purchase, LNG is re-gasified or stored and supplied to consumers.

Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) is basically natural gas (predominantly methane, CH4) that is converted into liquid
form through a process called liquefaction. In this process, the dry natural gas is converted into liquefied
natural gas at –162°C. When liquefied, volume of natural gas shrinks by 600 times the original volume
thereby, allowing easy flow of natural gas through ships and trucks.

OBJECTIVE: The primary objective of the study is to understand the market scenario for LNG and demand-supply
pattern of existing LNG terminals in China.
APPROACH & SOURCES: In order to extract, analyze and project a reliable demand and supply scenario for
LNG in China, both top down and bottom up approaches were used. Multiple employees from the following
companies have been interviewed through telephonic and face to face meetings, in order to extract and verify
collected information.
Companies Interviewed

In the beginning of China LNG market study, a brief study was conducted to understand each and every aspect
of China LNG market. Moreover, an in-depth analysis was conducted to understand natural gas demand-supply
scenario as well as LNG supply.
Subsequently, a detailed scrutiny of end user sectors and regional markets of natural gas and LNG in China was
done. Impact of under-construction LNG terminal projects and cross country pipelines was also considered and
assessed.
The study has been carried out considering various aspects of China LNG market:

In order to extract data for China LNG market, primary research surveys were conducted with key end user
sectors and LNG terminal operators to understand historical and present trends. However, for forecasting China
LNG market, the following assumptions were made -
1. Growing natural gas consumption in industrial and power sectors was used to estimate future demand for LNG
in China.
2. Growing peak shaving demand for natural gas in winters from power plants and residential sector has been
utilized to forecast demand for LNG in China.
3. Government pricing policies and their impact on the country’s LNG market has also been considered.
Considering these assumptions, our dedicated team of industry experts has comprehensively monitored and
analyzed various aspects of China LNG market. The team has analyzed various end user sectors and speculated
a positive outlook for China LNG market. Taking into consideration developments of LNG terminals, energy
efficiency investments, government support towards clean & green energy, policies and regulations, etc., our
team of analysts provided a prudent analysis of the industry’s performance in the future.

China LNG Imports to Grow at CAGR 15% till 2021
Growing demand from power, industrial, residential and transportation sectors, and rising concerns over increasing carbondioxide emissions to drive China LNG market through 2021
According to TechSci Research report “China LNG Market Demand & Supply Analysis, By End-User, By LNG TerminalsForecast and Opportunities, 2011 – 2021”, the market for LNG imports to China is projected to grow at a CAGR of over15% during 2016 - 2021, on account of increasing peak demand from residential consumers for space heating and risingdemand from integrated LNG power plants. China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC), a state-owned oil & gascorporation, is the largest integrated oil & gas company in China. The company dominates onshore pipelines business in thecountry and also operates through cross-country pipelines - Central Asia-China Pipeline and China-Myanmar Pipeline.
Increasing natural gas consumption and limited natural gas production is boosting demand for liquefied natural gas (LNG) inthe country. In 2014, LNG imports accounted for around 46% of the country’s total natural gas imports, making China thethird largest importer of LNG in the world, after Japan and Korea. Major consumers of LNG in China include power, industrial, residential and transportation sectors. Industrial sector is one of the largest natural gas consumer in China owingto increasing demand from smelting & pressing of ferrous metals, petrochemical plants, petroleum processing, coking andprocessing of nuclear fuel and petrochemical plants. China LNG market is mainly dominated by national oil companies suchas China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC), China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC), Sinopec and theirsubsidiaries. The highest regional demand for LNG is forecast to emanate from East China, due to rising LNG consumptionfrom industrial, power and petrochemical sectors in the region.
“Government of China prioritized expansion of natural gas based power plants, on account of growing air pollution andrising greenhouse gas emissions. This is boosting installation of new natural gas based power plants along with LNGterminals, especially in Guangdong and Shanghai provinces of the country. In order to reduce coal consumption, Beijing hasalready replaced four major coal-based power plants with natural gas. In the coming years, the government is planning toreplace all coal based power plants in the country with natural gas based power plants. This shift towards natural gas basedpower plants is forecast to propel growth in natural gas exploration and production, as well as augment China’s LNG importsin the coming years.” said Mr. Karan Chechi, Research Director with TechSci Research, a research based global managementconsulting firm.
