Children's & Teens'
WelcomeDear Readers:
This week, the Springfield Connectionturns over its pages to the youth and stu-dents.
We asked principals and teachers fromarea schools to encourage students to con-tribute their words, pictures and photos forour annual Children’s & Teens’ Issue.
The response as always was enormous. While we were unable to publish every piecewe received, we did our best to put togethera paper with a fair sampling of the submit-ted stories, poems, drawings, paintings, photographs and other works of art.
We appreciate the extra effort made byschool staff to gather the materials duringtheir busy time leading up to the holidays. We’d also like to encourage both schools andparents to mark their 2019 calendars forearly December, the deadline for submis-sions for next year’s Children’s & Teens’

Short poems by Maya Tirado of Springfield.
A TreeI love different colorsmy hair changes each season. It changes each timewhen the sun is highand wind is breezin’.
EarthThe earth is green, the earth is blue. The land, sea and everything around you.The tides, the waves come from the moon! The grass, the green comes from the clouds. The rain, the sun, everything on earth, helps each other for you!
ThanksgivingDelicious foodbrings gratitude. For family and friendsthey bring love to the heart andgratefulness to the mind.Enjoy and relaxfor your heartto say HOORAY.
Clouds of WonderClouds are mysteriesWhat do they do?Where do they come from? They help the environmentand I hope you do too!
WindThe wind is magicalthe wind is coolthe wind dances with the big blue sea,it dances with the little happy you.
StormA storm is mean,a storm is powerful.A storm is as stable as a house,as mean as a fire-breathing dragonand a slithering snake, andas powerful as a viper bite sting.

My FavoriteStuffed Toy
My favorite toy is my stuffed cat,Water. Before I got a cat, Water was mycat. We would go on adventures and Iwould dress her up. When I played fam-ily, she was the Nanny and best friend.Water was always with me when I wasscared, and she still is. I sleep with herevery night and bring her with me onevery trip. Six years ago, I got Water ata friend’s birthdayºparty. Water has acalico coat and is a bit flattened. I havereceived other stuffed animals, but Wa-ter is my favorite.

My Best Thing“Meg don’t you know that you’re the
best thing thatºever happened in a longtime?” That is a quote by Calvin O’Keefe. And to me, my best thing was when Ibecame friends with my friends. No, myfriends’ names are not Meg.
I had moved from Colorado to Vir-ginia and I had no friends. I had walkeddown to the bus stop and had shouted, well: “Is this the bus stop?!” ºThat waswhen I became friend with my friend. And my other friend. And my friend’solder sister. Two years later, another.
That was my essay on my best thing.—Hannah Rosenberry, 11
If I could give myparent one gift
If I could give my parents one gift thatdidn’t cost money, I would give them mylove. I would do that because they arethe ones who give me everything I have.Plus, they brought me into the world. IfI give them my love then I would doextra little things that help them out likeemptying the dishwasher, cleaning thebathroom, doing laundry and, sweepingand cleaning the rest of the house. Some-times it’s the little things that matter.
—Hannah Warschaw, 11
What I Want to BeWhen I Grow Up
What do I want to be when I grow up?I want to be three things. First, I wantto be a pilot in the Air Force. Then I willretire and become an airline pilot. Thenfinally I retire and become a car de-signer for a lot of car companies.
—Gregory Worley, 12
What would youchange about school
If I was ever asked, “What would youchange about school?”
I would scratch my chin as if they’rewas a beard and say with a shrug, “Ireally don’t know.”
But they would probably say, “Butyou have to choose!”
Then I would groan so loud that evenpeople on the International Space Sta-tion would hear me.
“Fine, I wish there would be an actualSoccer field installed on the field.” Afterthat, he would say, “That’s lame.” Thenthey would walk off.
And now that I just thought of that, Idon’t want to be asked that.

The anti-happy undergroundtritoothed hippo and his cohippodisagreed about forecasting theunderground weather so insteadthey got into their undergroundsubmarine and drove it in a semi-circle. As the duo drove their un-derground submarine the aquadog, a famous underground super-star, transported the anti-happyunderground tritoothed hippo andhis cohippo to the land above theunderground.

My multicolored pinkish-bluepet has duobows on each of herears. She was happily eatingmultichipped cookies. She made amistake and spilled the milk. Sothen she repoured the milk intothe polyspotted cup. Then shesemi-dipped her chocolate chipcookies and started to eat themnonstop. She was midway in her“eating the cookies the fastest”challenge when her friend came inand said those were her cookies! My pet said it was a misunder-standing and that the whole classgot cookies. After that her friendand she ate the cookies together.
The end.

The prehistoric, multiheaded, polyeyed purple octopus repairedhis irreplaceable calendar. He useshis calendar to predate the pastapocalyptic resurgence of man. Doyou think he’ll finish before hispregame warmup? And if he canwill our octopus be able to replace
the calendar’s indescribable qual-ity?

My grandmother said she had apet worth multi-million dollars. Itold her that was impossible so sheinvited me over to her house. Iknew my grandma was a formerbiology student and loved animals, but what I saw when I walked inwas insane! It was a hexahorned ,trilegged, deca-eyed dog lookingright at me. The prehistoric-look-ing thing was looking right at me.The prehistoric-looking dogmarched back to his bed – whichcould be misjudged to be a throne– and started to drink water outof his semi-filled wine glass.

My pet is a pre-human animal. He is a uni-headed, quad-eyed,octo-legged, tri-armed cat. He iswriting a report on why the CatCouncil should intercept midwaya group of enemy submarinestransporting unfriendlies under-sea. He is thinking about the in-justice and how it was impossiblethat the Council had overlookedhis first report. When they read itthey disagreed, dismissing it asnonsense. He is writing anotherreport about anti-Cat beings, say-ing that they will use the atmo-sphere to send encoded messagesto each other and also saying thatthey will use a mind-controlledsinging superstar to defrost thetension between the beings andthe Dogs.
