Squishy Squashy BirdsCarl van Wijk and Alicia MundayPrepare for laughter and chaos when the endangered birds that are trapped inside Sammy’s book are finally set free.
As Sammy’s favourite New Zealand birds are squashed into the pages of his book, their quirky personalities and colourful plumages are hidden from the world. They perch in awkward positions on the pages, far from their beautiful natural habitats and unable to live in the wild. That is, until Sammy decides to share them with his class during Show and Tell. Next thing you know, he has unleashed unbridled birdy chaos!
Once the craziness subsides, could the birds and the children end up being best feathered friends?
Beautifully illustrated by Carl van Wijk, Squishy Squashy Birds is the perfect book for those who love all things precious, wild and wonderfully New Zealand.
Whose Beak Is This?Gillian Candler and Fraser WilliamsonA picture book, for 3–6 -year-olds, Whose Beak is This? lets children guess the identity of iconic New Zealand birds from the pictures of their beaks, while finding out some facts about birds along the way. This fun approach, encourages children to look closely at the pictures and introduces an important science concept about adaption - birds’ beaks are an adaption to the kind of food they eat.
Changing TimesThe story of a New Zealand town and its newspaperBob KerrMatt McPherson is cycling around town delivering the last edition of the town newspaper, The New Zealand Times. It is being closed by its owners.
Using wonderfully detailed illustrations of the changing landscape of the town in combination with excerpts from the newspaper, author Bob Kerr takes the reader through a brief history of New Zealand, from the first settlers up to the present day.
At the end of the book, we find Matt saving the newspaper by appointing himself editor, putting it online and running it from his laptop. Here the reader can actually go online to a website related to the book to learn more about New Zealand history, and access our national online encyclopedia, Te Ara.
Changing Times is a fascinating introduction to our history for 7–12 year olds. It will also engage parents and grandparents who will recognise their own lives and family histories in its pages.
WHOOSH! The cover flew openand Sammy spoke out loud,
‘These are all my favourite birds,’holding the book up to the crowd.
The birds burst from the pages, like a rainbow-feathered sea.
They were screeching, squawking, flapping – an amazing sight to see.
