Chapter 5
Chick Fil A
HISTORY…The chain grew from the Dwarf Grill (later the
Dwarf House, a name still used by the chain), a restaurant opened by S. Truett Cathy, who is still the company's chairman, in the Atlanta suburb of Hapeville in 1946. This restaurant is located near a now defunct Ford plant, where workers once caught meals between shifts. The first Chick-fil-A opened in Atlanta's Greenbriar Mall in 1967.
LOCATIONS…Chick-fil-a has over 1,300 locations in 37
U.S. states and the District of Columbia
COSTS…Initial financial commitment of $5,000…
then granted a license to open a chick-fil-a franchise
The parent company takes a greater percentage of your recurring business over time – 15% of gross sales and 50% of net profits each month. In addition, Chick-fil-A builds the restaurant on property they select and subleases the property back to you.
TRAINING AND SUPPORT…In order to run a Chick-fil-A franchise, you
need to be a born leader. The parent company requires several years of prior experience managing businesses from the ground up and showing a history of success. In addition, this isn't a hobby you can do on the side: you must be hands on and dedicate yourself exclusively to the business.
PRODUCTS…Sandwiches, chicken fillets, nuggets,
strips, waffle-cut fries, wraps, salads, fruit, milkshakes, sodas and other beverages
MY FRANCHISE…I want to put a chick-fil-a in commack, long island, NY
because there are not many chick-fil-as in NY and I think it would be successful there. There are only a few chick-fil-as in NY and none of them are located on long island.
RANKINGS/SUCCESS…In 2008 chick-fil-a was ranked number 1 in
top drive thrus.
COMPETITION…Although chick-fil-a is a chicken restaurant,
it is right up there competing against chains like McDonald’s, Wendy’s, and Bojangles.
