● This mural is a replica of the larger Nine Dragon Wall built in Beijing.
● The dragons represent power, luck, and prayers.
● Traditionally, screen walls are built to separate the entrance to a home
from the outside world.
o Chicago’s Nine Dragon Wall separates the city from the arched
gateway into the Chinatown Square.
● The area is lined with clothing and grocery stores, antique shops, and
restaurants.
● The architecture of buildings resembled those common in the chinese
culture.
o pagoda style roofs, and etched in designs of dragons and other
sacred animals.
● In honor of Ping Tom, a prominent figure in the establishment of the
park.
o There is a sculpture of Tom in the pavillion (we didn’t get to see it)
● The park’s opening was in 1999
● Entrance is marked with 20 feet tall columns designed with dragons to
model a chinese courtyard.
● The park includes chinese gardens lined with bamboo trees and other
traditional chinese plants.
