When the weather takes a turn for the worst, it can be hard not to let your mood falter as well. The sun hides behind the clouds, the days get shorter and the cold weather compels you to stay indoors. Staying positive and overcoming the tendency to fall into low spirits can help your well-being and state of mind. Be a social butterfly! Bundle up and brave the cold. Seeing and socialising with friends will help you stay optimistic, even if it seems easier to just sit around alone at home. Just staying in touch and chatting with
someone close to you can help you beat the doldrums. Energize yourself! Hibernating may sound appealing, especially when the arctic winds blow down from the Mountain, but staying active can help you physically and emotionally. Even if you can’t see the sun during the day, leave your blinds open. Every winter, seasonal affective disorder plagues those who hide away indoors. Take a walk around the block when the weather permits, and make sure to drink plenty of fluids. Keep your mind sharp! Beat the winter blues by keeping your mind engaged even though it can be more difficult during the cold months. Find something that interests you and will challenge you at the same time. The best way to stay positive during the winter is to stay energized and do the things that make you feel good. In the meantime, you’ll notice that our calendar has plenty to offer as the days become shorter and colder. Let’s work together to beat the winter blues ~ Ingrid
Over the next few months, you may encounter a new person in the office. This is Sally and she will be working 3 days a week (Monday, Tuesday and Wednesdays) whilst Alison is working for another Lifeline program. Sally has worked for Lifeline over a number of years, coordinating the Community Visitors Scheme (CVS), a social support program for people who live in Aged Care Homes. We welcome her to Chats for the time being. Our good friend, Alison, isn’t gone for good though! Alison will continue working in Chats on Thursdays and Friday mornings, so we aren’t saying goodbye to her; just “hello” to someone new.

Easter is a traditional time for the community to come together. Whilst Easter falls in autumn in the southern hemisphere, it’s origins hail from the northern. The word Easter is taken from ‘Eastre’, an Anglo-Saxon fertility goddess of Spring. Come and join us to celebrate at the Black Buffalo, this is a great opportunity for us all to get together. Ways to Keep Safe This Autumn While autumn can bring many delights, it is important to remember the risks that the change in season can pose to the older people. Here are some ways that you can keep safe this autumn.
1. Prevent falls Autumn’s falling leaves can become tripping hazards. Keep
doorways, stairwells and walking passages clear of leaves and debris as they become slippery when wet.
Install strong lightbulbs in every room and hallway.
2. Fire hazards Check the batteries in the smoke detectors in your home. Check the condition of all electrical appliances. Be vigilant with
electric blankets. Keep space heaters away from flammable surfaces.
3. Check windows All windows should open and close easily. Older people should have access to fresh air and be
able to keep out the cold.
4. Keep warm Reorder your wardrobe when the temperature begins to drop. You should have easy access to
warm clothes but also leave a few light bits out for warmer days. Maintain a consistently warm temperature in the home and seal off any draft areas.
5. Flu vaccine Health services recommend that older people have a flu vaccine every year to prevent serious
illness.
6. Stay hydrated It is important to drink plenty of water and stay hydrated when the indoor heating is
on. Staying hydrated will also prevent skin drying out. Also recommended is, the regular application of moisturiser to your skin and lips.
