PUBLISHED MONTHLY BY THE KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS BISHOP SPALDING COUNCIL #2761Vol. 82 No. 10 October 2016
2016 TOOTSIE ROLL DRIVEUNDERWAY 1 SEPTEMBER - 31 DECEMBER
Our Council’s Annual Tootsie Roll Drive is already underway and consists of ROADBLOCKS on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, Sept. 30, Oct. 1st, and 2nd plus PERSONAL DONATIONS to our Council Charity Fund. Donations of $100 or more will be recognized on the front page (TOOTSIE ROLL HONOR ROLL) of the Good Knight from October thru the December issue.
A lot of our council members have received a letter from the K of C KY Association for Person with Intel-lectual Disabilities, Inc. (KAPID) with a Louisville Post Office box address. This is a legitimate K of C project to help sponsor a Summer Camp for person with intellectual challenges, however, it is NOT our Council's Tootsie Roll Drive and we do not receive any of the revenue that is generated for our council charity fund.
ROADBLOCKS INFORMATION AND SCHEDULE
The staging area for the volunteers at the roadblocks is the bank parking lot on the corner of US 42 (Brownsboro Road) and Highway 22. To cover the corners adequately it takes about fifteen (15) people per shift. Water and refresh-ments will be in the staging area.

Greetings Brother Knights. September started off with the Labor Day Picnic in the Park. The families attending had a good time playing corn hole, volley ball, water balloon toss and swimming. Music was provided by Steve Oswald and his collection of records. The Park Committee did an excellent job preparing the park for the close of summer swimming.
October 2-9 has been designated as Charitable Service week by Supreme. Our Council, 2761, starts the week with the Tootsie Roll Drive on 9/30, 10/1 and 10/2. If you have not signed up to work on the road block contact, Greg Johnson and give him a time you can help during this important drive. Our Council consistently raises more each year in this Charity Drive than any other council within the state. This designation is a nice point of pride for our Council.
We end the week on October 8 at the Cathedral soup kitchen providing the man power to prepare and serve soup and sandwiches at the Cathedral soup kitchen. Providing this service to the less fortunate is a rewarding event. All who wish to serve are welcome. We will also be delivering the food collected up to this time from our food drive. Keep the cans of vegetables coming. We are off to a good start.
We host our annual Halloween party 10/22 in the park for the children and young at heart adults. A savory witches brew and other scary snacks will be served. Of course we cannot forget the wagon ride through the park's frightful haunted fields. Dress up in your scariest costume and bring the children and friends for a fun filled evening. If we should have bad weather the party will be on 10/29.
During the month of October anyone who purchases $20 in electronic pull tabs will be registered in a drawing for a big screen TV. The drawing will be held at dinner on the last Sunday of October.
A first, second, and third degree exemplification will be held at St. Margaret Mary on 10/1 starting at 9:00 am. We have candidates for induction to these degrees. Any 1st degree member who wishes to become third degree contact Paul Martin or me to have you registered for the exemplification.
Coming up November 6 is Bishop Spalding Charitable Golf Scramble at Long Run. Contact Pete Manning or Pat Sheehy to sign up your team. Any day on the golf course is a good day but this is an especially good day as the proceeds all go to the Charity Fund.Mark your calendar for November 20, we are hosting a Blood Drive at the council on the first floor. The time is from 12:30 to 4:30. More details to come in next month's news letter.
Finally, I have a few Football Frenzy tickets remaining. See me during the weekend meals or at the next meeting if you wish to purchase a ticket.

CLUBHOUSE– We are still working on acquiring a new A/C unit for the 2nd floor. Equipment has been identified and we are currently working on purchasing it and then obviously we will install it. It is very much appreciated the fact that a lot of you, are still attending the Friday and Sunday dinners.
PARK & POOL- The pool has been drained and most of the pool equipment put away and now Dennis, Greg and others are preparing the park and concession stand for the Council's Annual Children's Halloween Party, Saturday, October 22, starting at 6 PM.
SPECIAL THANK YOU to Gordie Bramer for bringing a piece of equipment to help improve the drainage at each of the entrances to our parking lot when it rains hard.
DOCKS & HURRICANE DECK- As I write this on September 25th we still have seven more weeks of boating here at our K of C docks. For boaters planning purposes we will turn the water off on the K of C docks on Thursday morning, November 10th. On Saturday, November 12th, 0900 hours, the electricity is turned off and the lights, light poles and water pipes are taken off the docks and placed on top of the river bank or under the concession stand.
BOATERS JUST A REMINDER, HAVE A PLACE FOR YOUR BOAT WHEN WE LEAVE OUR DOCKS.
Overall, I think we had a good boating season and I am really pleased with the serious upgrading that was accomplished on the docks, especially the main patio area by the hurricane deck and the painting of the floor of the hurricane deck. Just another thank you to all that work so hard to make it happen.
CHARITY PROJECTS UPDATE- The weekend, FRIDAY, SATURDAY, & SUNDAY, SEPT. 30; OCT 1ST & 2ND IS OUR ANNUAL TOOTSIE ROLL DRIVE. There are a number of ways you can be a vital part of this annual campaign. Give a couple of hours to work the roadblocks (see front page for specific times and locations); donate $100 or more and be recognized and thanked on the front page of our Good Knight each of the last three months of this year; and lastly if you want to join a
Knights Corporation newsBy: John auBrey
special group of "APOSTLES" write a check for $500 or more.(THE ROADBLOCKS ARE ALWAYS VERY SUCCESSFUL IN THE AMOUNT OF MONEY THAT IS RAISED EACH YEAR)
Don't forget to save the aluminum cans and bring to the clubhouse. We sent a load Thursday, September 22nd, thanks to help from Tommy Cooper, to River Metals. I have not heard yet how much we will receive for the council charity fund.
PAPERBACK BOOKS FOR VETS is still ongoing project for the Fourth Degree and our F/N reported in his article to date they have delivered 23,516 books to the VA Hospital on Zorn Avenue.

INJURY LAWCall On Any Injury Claim - No Obligation.
Many thanks to those who attended our last 4th Degree meeting on September 14. When I look out, and see all the familiar faces, I can't help but feel a special bond for each and everyone of you. You are the driving force behind who we are and what we accomplish. Special thanks are due to SK Ron and
Lady Karen Segars for the delicious dessert dropped off for our meal after the meeting. Our next and final meeting of the year will be October 12, 2016, please mark your calendars.
There are many upcoming events that requires your support. First and foremost is our council Charitable Tootsie Roll drive from Friday September 30- through Sunday, October 2. Many thanks to all those who volunteer their time and effort to make this an annual success, especially to Sir Knight Greg Johnson for the long hours coordinating and taking the lead.
Next on the agenda is the Children's Halloween party on October 22. The ghouls and goblins will start serving hot dogs and some type of witch's brew somewhere around 7 PM. Bring your kids, friends, and families and let them see all the family oriented fun associated with belonging to the Spalding Council Knights of Columbus.
On a more solemn matter, we will have our Mass of Remembrance at 7 PM on November 9th, commemorating the Knights and Council Members who passed away this year. Then we will have our Thanksgiving Day Mass at 10 AM on November 24th. Our Faithful Friar, Father Pius Poff will celebrate both Masses supported by the 4th Degree Color Corps in full regalia.
The 4th Degree is the Patriotic Degree of the Knights of Columbus . If you are not yet a member, would you consider joining and stand along with those who have served and fought to keep our country free? If interested, please contact me anytime. Our Books for Vets program turned over another 38 paperbacks to the VA Hospital for a grand total of 23,516 books donated to date.
As always, please remember the Wednesday lunches, Friday Fish Fry, and Sunday dinners including the good friends and camaraderie shared by all.

Hello Ladies. It's hard to believe that we are al-ready heading into October. Before we know it, it will be Christmas. Don't forget that we will be do-ing Grab Bags at our October meeting. Roberta Rosenbaum is chairing this event. A big thank you to Roberta for taking this event on for us.
The Columbia Ladies will be going to see "Hal-leluiah Girls" at Derby Dinner Playhouse on Wednesday, September 28. The cost is $33.00 and the Club will pay $10.00 for members. Guests are welcome. We have only reserved 25 seats, so if you haven't signed up please check with me to see if there is space still available.
I was glad to hear that everyone had a good time at Wild Rita's and the day in NuLu. It was some-thing different and a good way to see more of our city.
November 16th will be our day at Churchill Downs for those that would like to go. Bobbie Aubrey will have the sign up sheet and more information about cost and other details. It's been a fun day the last few years we have attended. Guests will also be welcome.
Shirley Huhn said that we did very well on our Ac-cessory Sale. We donated all the leftover items to the Little Sisters of the Poor to use at their an-nual card party. Thank you Shirley for taking care of this event for us.
