Introduction
IMD2214 - Chapter 1: 3D Computer Graphics
Animation is an art form created and cultivated overthe last century.
Through animation, new worlds can be imagined.
This modern art form evokes emotion through themovement of a sequence of drawings, paintings,photographs or rendered images.

Introduction
IMD2214 - Chapter 1: 3D Computer Graphics
Digital characters and sets can now be built andanimated, then presented in different media formatssuch as film, video and interactive games.
Characters and visual effects can even be seamlesslyintegrated into live-action footage.

3D Computer Animation
IMD2214 - Chapter 1: 3D Computer Graphics
The use of 3D graphic tools is now an important partof many television, film and multimedia projects.
The way objects appear in perspective, the way a
surface bends and twists, or the way a lightilluminates a spaceall of these complex 3D effectscan now be recreated on the computer.

3D computer graphics has had to animate a flyinglogo as a new and dynamic way of getting themessage across.
Flying logos are now integrated into more complete3D environments where a product is advertised or acorporate message introduced.
Character animation is also used more to bring
objects to life and help sell the message.

Animated Short Films
IMD2214 - Chapter 1: 3D Computer Graphics
This animated short films were able to tell acompelling story about the influences of our societyon the average person.
Short films provide a fertile ground forexperimentation that help drive innovation in thecomputer graphics industry.

Feature Films
IMD2214 - Chapter 1: 3D Computer Graphics
Before this, many films have integrated 3D intoexisting live-action scenes.
Pixars Toy Story became the firstfeature-lengthanimationthat used 3D exclusively for characters
and sets. ImageworksStuart Little took this one step
further and made a digital mouse the star of a live-action movie.

Visual Effects
IMD2214 - Chapter 1: 3D Computer Graphics
Film sets can be partially built andthen extended with detailed 3Ddigital sets.
smoke, fire and exploding objects
can now be simulated within thesafety of a computer screen.
The best effects make it impossible tofind the line between reality and
where computer graphics are used.

Interactive Video Games
IMD2214 - Chapter 1: 3D Computer Graphics
Video games have developed from black and whitepixels to real-time virtual environments built with3D characters and sets.
Game artwork is becoming more sophisticated withcomplex 3D models, texture maps, lighting and evendynamics.

IMD2214 - Chapter 1: 3D Computer Graphics
Digital content creation tools are used in a number offields including fine arts, architecture,design,education and scientific research.
With advances in the webs ability to present graphic
and 3D information, visualization on the internet isemerging as an important tool for many companies.

The Animation Pipeline
IMD2214 - Chapter 1: 3D Computer Graphics
The animation pipeline can be summarized in 7stages: modeling;
characters;
animation; materials and textures;
lights and cameras;
effects;
Rendering and compositing.

1. Modeling
IMD2214 - Chapter 1: 3D Computer Graphics
This is the stage where you build geometry torepresent objects and characters.
This geometry describes
the position and shape of
your models and can be
manipulated in the 3D
workspace.

2. Characters
IMD2214 - Chapter 1: 3D Computer Graphics
Characters are models that use special controls suchas skeleton joints and inverse kinematics foranimation.
These controls make it possible to create the complexmechanics required by characters.

3. Animation
IMD2214 - Chapter 1: 3D Computer Graphics
Once a model has been setup for animation, you canbegin to animate it.
By changing its position or shape over time, you
bring it to life. The timing can then be tweaked to create very
specific motion.

4. Materials and Textures
IMD2214 - Chapter 1: 3D Computer Graphics
In order for geometry to be rendered, it must begiven material attributes that define how it will beshaded by light.
Texture can also be added to bring detail and visualrichness to the surfaces.

5. Lights and Cameras
IMD2214 - Chapter 1: 3D Computer Graphics
As you would on a movie set, you must set up lightsand cameras to illuminate and frame objects.
You can then animate both the lights and the camera
to further mimic Hollywood effects.

6. Effects
IMD2214 - Chapter 1: 3D Computer Graphics
There are many effects such as fire, fields of grassand glowing lights that cant be easily representedusing models and textures.
Tools such as particles and Maya Paint Effects can beused to add effects.

7. Rendering and Compositing
IMD2214 - Chapter 1: 3D Computer Graphics
Once all the scenes parts are ready, you can render asingle image or a sequence of images.
You can also render objects separately, then bring
them back together in 2D using a compositingsystem.
